Episode 144: Minding the Darkness, Minding the Light w/Peter Dale Scott (Part 18)

Having just celebrated his 95th birthday, Professor Peter Dale Scott joins us to recount his experiences working on a documentary back in the 1970’s for the CBC television news show “The Fifth Estate.”

This is the 18th installment of our oral history series with the prolific poet, historian, and political theorist who gave us parapolitics as well as the deep politics approach.

Special thanks to Dana Chavarria for the sound engineering!

Peter sounds a lot like Michael Hudson here (just happen to be reading Super Imperialism right now).

I tried to find the video Peter and Aaron discuss and came across this link with the following description, which is quite opposite of what Peter said. “They discussed the shot from the area and Scott went as far as to say that they believe there was more than one shooter. Curry in response kept his answers very vague without much depth.” https://jfkwitnesses.omeka.net/items/show/275

Very grateful to be able to listen to PDS in 2024, the historical context has been integral to my understanding of American empire, and thank you Aaron for making it possible.

Same! But also I highly recommend “Yao to mao: 5000 years of Chinese history” by dr. Kenneth J Hammond. It’s like 36 hours long! Absolutely captivating the whole way through. Dr. Hammond rocks too, I’ve seen him on break through news and stuff as well on occasion

There are plenty of mechanisms working on ending the Gazan blockade. Yemen continues their largely successful blockade of Israeli shipping. Michigan seems to be slipping out of Democrat's hands. Hamas is doing quite well fighting the IDF. Syria, Hezbollah, Iran, and Iraq are preparing for what may well be a final confrontation against Israel and US occupation of West Asia. The bodycounts are heavy and they're heavy with innocent men, women, and children, but victories against Western imperialism has always been paid in blood. The monster will not give up peacefully and must be incapitated by strong resistance. Electronic Intifadah has been very good about covering the resistance aspect (and a therapeutic counter to the likes of Norm Finkelstein who are wallowing in despair).

I would love a Chinese history series, if you ever have the time.

I love these series with Peter! Fascinating to know how much they were even able to get into the gears in Canada. I don't mean for this to sound dark because I think at heart I am an optimistic person (or at least willing to work to change terrible things?) and I know Peter is going for optimism... But the second we get to the place where we are just talking about the potential positive outcomes of mass death I worry we are trying so hard to find optimism that we are actually normalizing or accepting a mass death scenario from our comfortable Western armchairs as more acceptable than fighting back... And ultimately, I'm not sure that's moral or optimistic. I am certainly not pretending I know the answer, but watching the US strip funding from UNRWA should probably be raising a lot of questions for us as to what mechanisms exist to end the blockade and make continued escalation untenable. Maybe we don't have a role... But our country certainly has the most devastating role In terms of mass death and I'm not sure we can both be moral and rationalize or theorize about this reality 😥 I would say it might be quite a damning indictment of our culture.

Dana can likely fix this in future episodes!

Second this!

That's because they won't let us make anything honest. Every once in awhile something independent gets through... But even festivals have been co-opted by the studios at this point, unless you're really on the fringes. Plenty of money for hollow IP... But the wrong people have control of the funding mechanisms.

American soft power is going down the drain as well. The Barbie movie bombed in East Asia. Disney is destroying the Marvel and Star Wars brands. Lots of stories and memes on social media about the homeless and the decrepit infrastructure in America. What's so great about a settler colony based on genocide of indigenous peoples, slavery, and treaty breaking? Getting in a self branded "revolution" that was mostly about tax avoidance and removing any restraints on stealing indigenous land. Then chase it all down with 80 years of mobilizing Nazis and mobsters to fight whatever leftist/progressive forces arise in the world. The US can't even offer a decent life for the vast majority of the population within our borders anymore, but looks to stripmine them through debt peonage via extortionate costs for rent, education, and healthcare. We are even losing the capability to build effective tools of terror and to lie convincingly. US Army and Navy have fallen vastly short of their recruitment goals in recent years (I've seen videos on Youtube suggesting that much of the current military force are non-US citizens who joined for citizenship, in other words like the Goths in late Roman Empire) and there are plenty of stories of military families living in poverty. So what do we really have to offer the World except lessons of how not to do everything?

JB

this is like the smallest complaint, but could you use Mock Orange stuff that uses both speakers in the beginning, or just put it in mono? I always think one AirPod is broken or something.

Sign me up for the Chinese history series!

With all due respect to Mr. Scott, Mexico, under AMLO, has been transformed and is setting itself to be a global leader. This has been going unnoticed.
