Sorry but not really. I’m obviously really glad the conspiracy question “derailed” the episode and stoked a fascinating back-and-forth. I’d love a whole episode devoted to the history right-wing conspiracism. Aaron mentioned that deHaven-Smith focuses on linguistic/definitional precision when addressing such issues in his work and this definitely seems crucial. In a vacuum the phrase “conspiracy theory” would be perfectly appropriate to denote rigorous claims about covert action, state crimes, coverups, etc., especially considering the degree of analytical ingenuity involved in making such claims. (I'm thinking of "the negative template” metaphor Peter Dale Scott uses to describe his methodology in /Deep Politics/, for instance. Maybe a concerted leaning into the label for deep- or para-political research is possible? Meanwhile you could use something more overtly derisive for hair-brained right-wing conspiracy claims. “Crackpot conspiracism”?
