Episode 99: The Meaning of the Missile Crisis (EDS 24)

We look at the existential issues raised by the Cuban Missile Crisis. This is the 24th installment of our Empire and the Deep State series--an in-depth exploration of my new book American Exception: Empire and the Deep State. Again I am joined by series co-host Ben Norton of Geopolitical Economy as well our own Seamus McGuinness who is producing the series.

Note: the audio in the later segment sounds different because for some reason the app switched me from my good microphone to my computer’s factory microphone.

Thank you for this! The format is a little different than the standard podcast and the material in the early chapters is more in the realm of social science. So it besides the learning curve, I think the material gets more engaging as we go along. But by now, I am adding the history that I learned and was teaching and which informed my dissertation even if it couldn't be included. Also and FYI--the series is going to be paused for a bit while I put together this special Peter Dale Scott project. These EDS episodes actually take a ton pf preparation from me and this PDS project is a pretty serious undertaking. But the series should pick up again soon...resuming with basically the last year of JFK's life.

Just wanted to telegraph my love & profound gratitude to Aaron, Ben, Seamus, &co. for the work being done here. Today I recognized that American Exception is way out in front as my favourite podcast. The show was a bit rocky starting out, maybe, but turbulence like that is almost inevitable when setting forth with any serious discourse—let alone one of such gigantic scope and significance. I’m so glad you guys reached a point where you decided to get the show up and running instead of remaining for god knows how long in that terrifying purgatorial search for an “ideal” (read: non-existent), perfect translation of Aaron’s book’s introduction into one in the language of podcasting. Who can know, anyway, the true nature of one’s voice (whether as a host individually or a that of the show itself) without first starting to speak? By the by, I’m sorry I haven’t ordered the book yet. It’s that I’ve been enjoying the pod so much I’d like to keep indulging in the intrigue—such great information, so many revelations—episode by episode. I’ll order a copy soon, because I’d like to consolidate everything I’ve heard, once it’s all been covered. Being PDS “pilled,” as Seamus has put it, was of course life-changing. /Road to 9-11/ is one of the best reading-recommendations given to me in years. (Thanks Aaron). Shout out to Seamus for his evocation in this episode of that Cohen (sp?) essay on Cold-War rhetoric. You said you’d been harping on it but I missed it. Super illuminating! Will have to check that out. Tldr: this thing y’all are doing has really found its stride so please keep up this important work!
