Admittedly I only have a surface-level understanding of the way these cutout banking operations operate, but is it the case that their prominence coincided with the whole post-Watergate push to sub contract covert activity elsewhere? It seems to me that this was a way of doing things that was around before the whole 1970s safari club era but that it became relied upon more heavily afterward. Given how many examples there are of this kind of operation collapsing, one wonders if there are vastly more banking operations chugging along without issue or if it’s just a bad way of facilitating this kind of funny business that regularly falls apart
