Also, the umbrella terms gain/loss-of-function comprise a variety of topics in genetics, microbiology, immunology etc. Moreover, in my (limited) experience, academic research tends to lose sight of the purpose stated in grant applications but goes where the papers grow. That said, I don't mean at all to suggest that public health, for instance, is a priority for DoD funding …
