REport: The Great Katana Test

HeyJ, everyone! One quick update for you all: we've started getting some props in for FRUIT NINJA: THE MUSICAL... but one big problem we might face is how to -actually- cut through fruit... Our katana is more a replica than, er, a functioning instrument of death, which might inhibit how effectively it performs in this project. >_<

With that challenge in mind, Nate's been working the sword on a whetstone to see whether we can sharpen it up enough for some juicy fruit-slicing action. Having had a crack at a couple apples with it myself (off-camera), I can verify that it DOES chunk fruit into pieces, but it's probably not ready to tackle thicker fare still. Take a look at its first couple cuts in action!

Beard Salute!

i'm looking foward to this :)

Wishing you luck on the katana at least you cut the apple lol

Honestly I will be seriously impressed if you can somehow use that Katana to slice through a watermelon!

OOH! OOH! ๐Ÿ™‹๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธIโ€™ve faced nearly the same dilemma before! Had to film a swordsman in Hawaii who goes into the forest to train, slicing Pineapples for target practice. Got lots of shots of him using special powers to lift the pineapples up with his mind, then slicing at them while in the air. Nothing out of the ordinary, just the usual wire-work and crafty camera angles. But it was a mess trying to ACTUALLY slice pineapples with the sword. Certainly not in a way that looked cool or believable. The solution was to bring pre-sliced pineapple chunks and rings, then film close-ups of the guy swinging and roaring as pineapple bits flew past his face. The still-present challenge was coordination. Trying to throw the pineapples in such a way that looked good, and cameraguy trying to frame it all and keep it in focus while also showing the swordsmanโ€™s roaring face. I was the one tasked with throwing pineapple slices, and camera guy kept asking me to redo it because i was either throwing too fast, or not fast enough... Settled on giving it more of an upward TOSS, so it would slow down enough at the parabola to become visible for the camera... We were losing light quick, so by the time we figured it out, it was too late. When I saw the completed vid, they used a shot that spotlighted the guyโ€™s funny face over my best pineapple work. ๐Ÿ˜ž I donโ€™t know if that vid is online, but perhaps Iโ€™ll share it for reference if I can find it. You guys are clever cameramen, and well coordinated working together! I bet youโ€™ll pull it off someway or another! ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿป

Katanas are fun.

Cat and Books are Life

I was fully expecting replica to mean plastic or something similar haha. At least it cuts through apples, though!

Wait, whetstones actually need to be WET?! (shocked Pikachu face) The more you know!
