Your thoughts at the end were very good and nicely balanced. I know what you mean about recent "writers" who have invaded our programs in order to tell us what to think and what is right and what is wrong. It turns out that THEY are right and everyone who might disagree with them are wrong. Who would have guessed that? Science Fiction is a "target" for certain groups of people who feel threatened by the freedom of thought that its fans have. We are capable of thinking for ourselves and tend to be of the mind that people should be free to live as they wish, as long as they do not impose themselves on others or hurt them. Those groups who want to force us to believe only what they do obviously do not like that. So Sci-Fi must be tamed and neutralised as a source of free thought. Fortunately many of us will not conform and obey. You can see the terrible reviews and collapsing ratings for some of their recent shows that reflect this. :-)

Honestly it's not too much of a deal to think through. There is no right answer because the answer changes with context. In IRL, I'm vehemently against the sex change of a baby since I believe not only does it go against the nature of a human being but it creates HUGE problems for the child later on, BUT, in the context of the episode, this situation is an integral part of Maklan culture and outsiders have no right to interfere in that. It doesn't matter if it results in the destruction of their whole civilization, or not, you just don't interfere with other people's cultures unless it directly affects you. It is not our place to teach them "better" ways. What we can do is be ourselves to the best of our ability. Their exposure to our civilization will be interference enough as they will have a solid/clear point of juxtaposition. Also, the Rudolph's red nose argument can be used to defend the opposite side of the argument. There are cultures who let their hair grow extremely long because they believe it gives them abilities. There are many cultures that do things differently that give them unique experiences of life. These unique experiences are not always a handicap and can sometimes be an advantage as well.
