Friends S8 Ep: 19 & 20 - FULL REACTION

It is really nice to see Joey moving up the world and not struggling as much as he used to. That being said, episode 19 was another "recap" episode haha! Enjoy :)

Friends S8 Ep: 19 & 20 - FULL REACTION

Yeah they're called clip show episodes and I hate them, but they were a big thing on sitcoms before streaming took over. People couldn't watch Friends on demand, they had to wait for episodes to air on TV, so for general audiences these clip show episodes served as recaps to catch them up on the story and remind them of moments they maybe hadn't seen in years. They were a necessary evil lol.

Yes! The episode where Chandler takes a bath.

I love friends its my number one favorite sitcom but if i had one small complaint it would be what I call these half and half episodes, half the episode is flashbacks lol there's about four or five of them I believe starting in season four wich you already know ross and Emily's wedding

Glad I upgraded to flaming marshmallow

TBH these compilation episodes are not my least favorite. But it will be in every season

Joey got fired off of Days originally because he said in an interview that he sometimes wrote his own lines. The writers were pissed and wrote him out because of it.

Did they find out it was a girl?? I must have missed that

I understand why people aren't the biggest fans of the clip show episodes, especially while "binging" them, but I love them. However, of course they're not as good as the regular ones. Also, as for the first clip in regards to Joey's "exercise and eating healthy" comment, it's meant to be a joke/sarcasm, as you see other clips of him not actually exercising and not eating healthy at all. And I see you have the same problem Ross has about the name Emily πŸ˜‚ Anyway, Rachel's mum is so savage in E20 🀣 Also, can totally relate to Monica in a sense that I find any kind of confrontation difficult. Though I don't have her insane need for approval (especially for her friend's mum, which I think definitely comes from her own mum). Fun facts: The song Joey hums to Ross during his Bamboozled practice is the theme song to "I Dream of Jeannie". In 1x12, Ross hums the same tune after the gang all hum the "Odd Couple" theme song. During the Bamboozled quiz, Ross's answer that Queen Victoria is Great Britain's longest-serving monarch was true up until 2015 when Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her. Monica and Phoebe forgetting to invite Rachel's mother is a funny callback to Phoebe and Rachel forgetting to invite Monica to her own bridal shower. Goofs: It seems odd that Judy, Monica and Ross' mum, isn't at the baby shower, though Monica may have been forgotten to invite her as well. It's also possible that she didn't want her mother making comments about her not having children. Chandler's answer to Joey's "What film would you hear the line "Badges? We don't need no stinkin' badges!" is The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. But this line is actually from Blazing Saddles (though there is a very similar line in The Treasure of the Sierra Madre). At the very end of E20 when Monica falls down the stairs in her attempt to apologise to Rachel's mum, the green safety mat is visible where the steps should be.

Watching this on my break because now I work during the day and at night… Regarding the clip of Joey and Ross napping together, I think being able to nap and cuddle with friends is awesome. Being that comfortable with someone that you can do that is wonderful. I remember I was doing a show with one of my best friends, and it was a two show Saturday, and in between we both just slept on the couch in the green room in between shows. Best nap ever! 🀣

Agree that the flashback clips come across as lazy. Seems like the writers thought they were being clever; however, at the time, these tactics were seen as routine in most sitcoms. But, in this day and age of streaming and all the time loops of every show in the world, it just comes across as cringe. I think it was their way of trying to celebrate the success of the show. I don't think anybody thought how it would be perceived in 2025. Most episodes of Friends are 9 or 10's. This one is a 5 in my opinion.

What a cute idea...

Gotta be honest, I skipped the first one after the second flashback. I have an idea, maybe you should do a clip video of your past reactions just to kind of follow the show and be absurd. Reading the comments on YT would be quite entertaining I imagine.

At the time I felt cheated when they did the filler episodes. Remember we waited all week just to watch recaps. By this time the cast were being paid a million dollars each an episode. It was about this point I felt the writers were struggling with storylines. The set pieces were still great, but there was something missing.

Tom

Seconding the suggestion!

Syd

Yes, it's so common for successful series, particularly sitcoms, to drag things out so long that the characters and story have nowhere else to go and things start to get over-the-top. I think it's wise to have a general ending in mind, with room to adapt as the story evolves (you hear that, How I Met Your Mother???)

Rhetorical Thrill

I only like the flashbacks when the episode is emotionally charged . Cuz then the flashbacks hit different. This episode was clearly just filler but It did give us the amazing spelling of "Pheobe" πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Cheeee hooo!! Day 78: of suggesting (my girl 1991)
