Battlefield V (2018 game) = Finished

Hey, so I can't talk about this too much for some reasons I can't go into right now, but Battlefield V was good in ways I wasn't even expecting.

I played BF1, where the series debuted its vignette structure. It was...okay. Bland writing and mission setups were somewhat livened up by a novel World War 1 setting--one that for all its pre-launch discussion about nuance, didn't do much to pay off on the concept of war before black and white. War where people stopped shooting at each other, to recognize their shared humanity.

It was good lip service, but it didn't come through half as well as the sentiments. surrounding it. People talked about the game, though. They seemed to like it. The multiplayer was fun, as always. So far, so Battlefield.

In steps Battlefield V, and...no one is talking about it at all, despite being better in every way.

I played through all 3 campaigns, increasingly baffled. The mission setups were excellent, allowing unprecedented levels of freedom. The writing was well-done. Even though a three-mission limit per campaign meant some stuff had to be in broad strokes, character and genuine emotion always came through. In fact, much of the emotional effect they intended to invoke was communicated through its systems and scenarios--an unusually strong union of narrative and game design.

It improved on everything associated with its predecessor, each set of vignettes remaining cohesive in its own right while balancing different tones, ultimately forming one of the best shooter campaigns in years--and no one is talking about it.
No one is giving it the praise it very much deserves.

I'm stunned and sad and have no idea how we got here, and yet - here we are.

Play Battlefield V.
It's good.
