ah, sorry, there might be a misunderstanding ^^ some of members participated in dancing/singing competitions, were in bands, auditioned for other companies etc, - that’s how pledis found and recruited them. pledis is also known for doing a thorough background check on their trainees, so they most likely had an eye on certain people before approaching them. tho some were probably randomly picked, too. it’s just interesting that, among the dozens if not hundreds of trainees (many of whom actually auditioned), it were mostly the street-casted ones who made the final line-up.

2023-01-10 19:09:20 +0000 UTCYeah, I saw Big Bang at a sold out show in Los Angeles (Anaheim) in November 2012. Both nights were sold out, and getting tickets was just as brutal as it is today, lol. They were huge, and KPop in general was huge in SoCal and also in the Bay Area. A few months earlier (May 2012), I saw my first Kpop concert, a free show held adjacent to the Google campus that featured Kara, MBLAQ, SISTAR, f(x), BEAST, Girls’ Generation, Wonder Girls, Super Junior, and DBSK. Getting tickets for that one was also crazy because it was free, lol. That was at an outdoor arena and it was also packed.

They knew from seeing how their senior groups were managed that they shouldn’t rely on the company too much (esp with their debut being pushed back time and time again), so they took the matter into their own hands, started making their own songs, choreos, performances, etc. Seungkwan personally contacting variety shows (even without the company’s approval) also really helped to get their name out there…

2023-01-09 12:34:18 +0000 UTCYou seemed surprised that Joshua’s friends wanted to be kpop idols, but yeah kpop was already popular internationally even back then. Nowhere near as popular as it is now of course because of BTS, but 2nd gen and some early 3rd gen groups really contributed to its growth in international popularity. Big Bang, Girls Generation, 2ne1, PSY, SHINee, EXO are just some examples ~ Pledis was a known small company back then (meaning like, 2011-2013, when most of the members became trainees). I doubt that it was most people’s first choice (unless you’re Woozi and just go to the company that has the biggest brightest poster lmao), but there simply weren’t that many companies around, and if you didn’t make it into SM/YG/JYP, your options were very limited. They had other groups before SVT, like the other comment kindly explained in great detail, but they were still close to bankruptcy at the time bc they failed to manage their artists properly. After School, Nu’est and Pristin really deserved better :( but yeah SVT are by far their most successful group. Fun fact: most of the SVT members were street casted, afaik only Woozi and DK auditioned for pledis. It’s actually kind of wild that it were these randomly picked boys who managed to successfully make it through the intense training program and develop a strong passion for their work. Pledis might suck but they have a good eye for people.

2023-01-09 12:17:27 +0000 UTCPledis Ent had great artists before SEVENTEEN. AFTER SCHOOL and NU'EST are probably who will ring a bell with you more. Also, they had the soloist Son Dam Bi who was one of the so-called 'Queen' back then. You saw her in the 1st ep of 17 Project, the nice and pretty senior among the judges. Pledis Ent. is known to have a good sense of picking their trainees and really good ('harsh') training system thus their artists are always skilled and well-trained. But they failed a lot with their artist management, esp with marketing and promotions. The best examples are what happened with PRISTIN (debuted a year after SVT) and with NU'EST (who just disbanded last year). SEVENTEEN's success is truly something else. It was founded with talents, luck and hardwork. They say that it was a good thing that the VP led in managing SVT, instead of the CEO. That he and the whole Team SVT learned from the mistakes in handling the senior groups too. And of course, the way they allowed the members to actually contribute in all their songs and other contents worked pretty well.
