The Crystal Shard

Evan has a new kickstarter launching early next week focused on an arctic tundra setting - largely influenced by the R.A. Salvatore series "Icewind Dale", which was made into PC games and is a canonical region of the Forgotten Realms.

One of the coolest parts of the books was the "Crystal Shard", a magical element that formed itself into a tower made of crystal! Thanks to the OpenForge patrons, I was able to create my version of the shard! - with some changes of course. The original was impenetrable and sealed on all sides. That was kind of boring, so I made a balcony and exterior stairway. Perhaps the doorways have a magical seal to keep the elements at bay? The bottom is ringed with snow and smaller crystals, with a magically sealed/runed front door.

Please note that this is NOT a small print. There's 4 levels and a topper. Each floor is included as a full-height floor (most floors are about 50mm high, with the first floor being taller) -or- split floors where you can open the shard to have half-height walls on the level you want to play/show (which also makes for smaller prints).

Due to the geometric design/shape of the elements of crystal, you should be able to get away with a larger layer height and still have it look decent - larger layer lines will show more on the top, but since the edges are flat a quick hit with sand paper can smooth em out easily!

Grab the files on Thingiverse and let us know what you think!

This is awesome! Would it be possible to get a version with a removable door?

Where's a good place to post pictures. I've started printing the Crystal Shard, and it's looking AMAZING...

Infill pattern will definitely be the tricky part

Dante Nava

Only thing to note, translucent PLA is never really totally translucent, and you can see infill so make sure to use a pattern that won't be too noticable.

Evan Carothers

will do as soon as he launches it

Please make sure that we see a link to the kickstarter on here!

Then I'll make sure to post pics ðŸĪ“👍

Dante Nava

probably amazing

I JUST got some "clear" PLA, how do you think this would look in that?
