Cave Entrance

When Danny from 3d Printed Tabletop reached out to me to make a model for the Lost Adventures Kickstarter I was super excited to be able to contribute to such an awesome concept and have my model join in with the models from a ton of other great modelers.  I was doubly excited when he presented to me the idea he wanted me to work on, which was a terrain piece for the free encounter, The Wilderness and as you know, free models are my jam.  This model is the result of that collaboration.

I present to you the Cave Entrance.  This cave entrance is sized to be able to hold a large sized mini in the mouth of the cave, and makes for great scatter for that fight just outside the cave that the adventurers are heading to, or for the ambush by beasties that attack the party as they trek through the wilderness.

Take a gander at the kickstarter, it's a highly innovative campaign with tons of awesome miniatures, scatter and terrain pieces executed by some of the best modelers in 3d printed gaming.

This is some of my first real work going entirely organic.  I actually have a little bit of a background in geology, it was my minor for most of college.  This part goes into some deep geek on geology, so feel free to ignore. What I've aimed for here is a cave that is cutting into a rock face where the rock has alternating layers of a softer probably limestone and a harder rock with the pitting and bumps common of a conglomerate.  Further, nearly all natural caves and caverns are in limestone, so I wanted to be sure that it contained that at least as a component.  The layers are at a steep angle, which suggests that this is in an area of uplift, which is consistent with this cave being in the foothills of a mountain range. I've included the image I used as inspiration.

As usual, grab the files on Thingiverse and let us know what you think in the comments!

What other pieces did you end up contributing to the Kickstarter Devon? Or was this the only one?

I didn't get into mini's and terrain until I got a 3D printer, and have since backed a few kickstarters and patrons. One thing I'm liking is that The more of the designers are leaning towards FDM printable minis, especially supportless or nearly supportless. They don't come out as well as they would on a resin printer, but still look GREAT at .1mm resolution.

Very cool! I love the idea of Kickstarting individual adventure packs, although I feel like the ones I've seen are heavily focused on minis rather than terrain. This is slightly less appealing to me because a) I've got all the minis I could ever need from backing Reaper Bones Kickstarters, and b) with an FDM printer rather than resion, terrain looks great but minis are far harder to get a nice print out. I'd prefer to see Kickstarter "adventure packs" that focus more on unique terrain and dungeon tiles as opposed to mini figure packs. However, I love the direction this is going in!
