I’m currently quite behind on watching reactions but I want to say that I do enjoy your wider commentary including the political. One thing gave me pause with this episode. I realize that “Nazis” has become somewhat of a generic trademark for fascists and that “Nazis are bad” is a shorthand for “specific things the Nazis did are bad.” But I find it problematic that what makes the world here recognizable as bad is primarily the branding—swastika on the flag, Hitler mural on the wall, Mein Kampf on every desk. And yes, this was mainly presented as a funny bit at Chris’s expense. But especially given the current political climate in many countries I worry that without this branding people won’t be able to make the association. (“Sure, Nazis are bad. What does that have to do with how our government centralizes power while demonizing minorities?”) If James Gunn wanted to make a point, I think it would have been more impactful (a) to focus more on what bad stuff is actually happening and how it’s become part of society, and (b) to not make it seem as if this could only happen in America if it was forced on the people from outside—by losing a war 80 years ago at that.
