You could argue that the first Scary Movie was a soft revival of this genre (even it was more like a direct parody of other movies) but it spawned an unholy number of terrible ripoffs that didn't even understand this kind of humor. The ripoffs leaned more into the "parody" aspect and without any jokes whatsoever. Just slap a bunch of random-ass shit together taken from other movies and call it a day. Epic Movie for example was one of the worst things I've ever seen, it has ONE joke that could be argued is funny in that entire abomination. I would say what it is but it's a reference to American Pie that you haven't watched. tldr: a single good comedy can help revive the genre but it can also bring forth a bunch of terrible movies that don't understand WHY the original film worked.
