I don't think it's been confirmed that Luffy and Ace were ever supposed to be blood related at first but it's true that Ace being Roger's dad is a retcon

2025-07-10 23:09:52 +0000 UTCThe reason you didn't see it coming that Gold Roger was Ace's dad is because it's a retcon. Ace was indeed related to Luffy by blood when Oda first conceived the character. That's why, when we first meet Ace, he has the same mannerisms as Luffy and Garp -- the bottomless stomach and the ability to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. It was only later, when Oda was writing Impel Down and talking to the Shonen Jump editors about the upcoming Marineford arc that he decided to make Ace Roger's son instead of Dragon's.
