What a fascinating and deeply sad movie. I probably wouldn’t have watched it if you hadn’t reacted to it but I’m glad I did. BtVS wasn’t quite as important to me but it’s still one of my favorite shows and I too rewatch it every few years. I wonder how many Buffy references I’ve missed. The obvious ones are The Pink Opaque having a main character called Tara, using the same font as BtVS for its credits and “ending” after season five but then starting season six with a main character escaping from her grave. And of course Amber Benson is in the movie.
