important question
Added 2023-12-08 16:57:57 +0000 UTCman you know it's december when I'm spamming posts
but okay, here's to thing. And I do want people's opinions too, that's why I didn't make a pole. But here's the situation.
We've been having the Royal system for a while now, and I like it a lot. it's not perfect but I feel like it works well and people seem pretty happy with it. But right now, on the court side of thing, out of the five people picked one of them informed me they stopped being a patreon (fair enough) and two are complete no-shows. And like, I mean, it's fine, the main Royal did get in touch and I have their picks but like, what if all three non-responsive peeps had been Royals? That could have gotten messy and honestly kind of a downer.
So. To me, the idea was always that, like, you opt-in into the Royal system once and that's it, it's done, it's all good, no worries. But I'm starting to think it might be necessary to, like, refresh the listing once in a while. Maybe as a yearly thing? Not after every event, absolutely not, but like maybe once a year it'd be nice to make sure everyone in the list is there, ready and available.
Any thoughts on the matter?

four days late because I'm never on patreon; I think a yearly reset is good but I would like a heads up on youtube (because I am never on patreon)

2023-12-13 02:01:58 +0000 UTCNot going to lie, I always wondered why you set it up to be driven by Discord rather than as a passive benefit to Patreon membership. Anyway, figured I'd speak up as someone who probably wouldn't want the attention and would appreciate an opt-out option if you do convert over.

2023-12-09 18:28:43 +0000 UTCI have no strong opinion on how to solve the issue, but if you do go the route of refreshing the list every year, you could make the warning as simple as working it into the standard "how to opt in" spiel you do every wheel video, just saying "you're in for the next year" or such. Further explanations could take the form of a new pinned post, maybe?

2023-12-08 21:02:36 +0000 UTCThis feels like one of those things where it would be good to get a helper to go through the list and check in. Are they currently a Patapon? Do they still want to be part of the game? Have they fallen into a space-time hole and need to be rescued by Captain Viridian? I know you don't want to miss someone who wants to be a part of it but it helps reduce the number of issues if you can figure out beforehand that someone on the list isn't around anymore.

2023-12-08 20:56:27 +0000 UTCThis might be something to be delegated to a secretary-type person? Once a year compare the list of patapons with the list of opt-ins and if they're not a patapon just take them off of the opt-in list. But then the secretary-type person would also need the list of aliases and there are privacy concerns at that point.

2023-12-08 20:34:39 +0000 UTCHaving some form of refresh would avoid some issues, but it might also be a bit tedious depending on how it is done (people here, on discord, maybe on talkhaus, etc.)

2023-12-08 20:25:06 +0000 UTCÌ have no relevant opinion to share on this since I never opt-in. But I thought I could say a little hello !

2023-12-08 20:16:42 +0000 UTCI've honestly wondered about that. like, not having it opt-in and just using the list of current patapons directly. I just wonder if some people would rather like *not* get the attention in some way, which is why I've had it opt-in to start with

2023-12-08 20:06:56 +0000 UTCI'm one of those liminal fans who drifts in and out of paying attention on a timescale of years. I happened to be picked for Royal a while back during a time I was not paying attention and it forced me back into watching for quite a while. So, if there's any dark part of you that values "audience retainment rate," remember that lapsed viewers being wrested from their slumber can actually help keep your money stream flowing. Horrible to think about, I know. Maybe just export a CSV of current Patreonies and Discorders with active-enough accounts every time and assume all would want in? Perhaps setup linking Patreon accounts and implement a Discord role?

2023-12-08 19:29:47 +0000 UTCI'd almost say drop an individual video warning people like "Hey, yearly check-in. If you want to be on the wheel, let me know. Otherwise you wont get a chance." Just so it's clear when it hits the subscription page.

2023-12-08 19:29:22 +0000 UTCYeah, just check up on people every 2 years or something!

2023-12-08 19:10:31 +0000 UTCI like it. The less people there are on the wheel the more likely I am to win

2023-12-08 18:15:22 +0000 UTCI think this works. Even if someone is off the internet for a month or whatever and misses the message anywhere you might put it... your usual wheel video's warning of "this is opt-in!" will probably change into "if you haven't opted in for 20XX yet and you want to, do!". So people will learn about it when-and-if they're paying attention to patreon stuff. And if they're not, they probably don't mind!

2023-12-08 18:08:15 +0000 UTCfair, but consider that traditionally I also dm the winner/s like a day later if I don't get a response

2023-12-08 18:02:32 +0000 UTCI'll say that, while I like the fun and the mystery of draws, listing the names of the winners along with the games to be voted on will help in the cases when you don't have the time to watch immediately and you might miss that you've won for a couple of days

2023-12-08 17:27:38 +0000 UTCThe only issue I see is people who aren't really active in the community but still support, so just did it as a "set it and forget it" thing for if they get a notification. It's not entirely fair to them as they might not even realize the list is being refreshed, unless all the poeple in the list get messaged.
Sentinel
2023-12-08 17:27:12 +0000 UTCright now, as it is, people who have previously won cannot be a full-on royal, only a court member, for what it's worth

2023-12-08 17:23:48 +0000 UTCI think a refresh is a great idea, maybe twice a year to make sure people are still supporting your patreon. Also since this topic has come up I have some feedback on the system as a whole. Would it be an okay idea to have people who previously won to maybe be put on a temporary cooldown of sorts? I see a lot of repeat royals and its probably a bit of a downer for people who haven’t even had the chance to win once.

2023-12-08 17:20:53 +0000 UTCYeah, a yearly refresh seems like a good call. It prevents people who will not admit that they aren't a patron (good on the Knight who admitted, they're cool) and just reminds people "hey, you're doing this" with minimal disturbance on their end.

2023-12-08 17:13:45 +0000 UTCA refresh sounds like a good idea. An "opt in for next year" gives a nice whole year buffer to allow people to reaffirm their royalty/interest.

2023-12-08 17:10:28 +0000 UTCI've always been supportive of cleaning out the lists once in a while of those who are no longer subscribed to Patreon. Like, yes, it's opt-in, but I feel like that opt-in comes with the obvious stipulation of "as long as you're subscribed." Because I suspected something like this would happen eventually

2023-12-08 17:10:05 +0000 UTCNo harm in a refresh if it helps you know who still actually exists

2023-12-08 17:08:21 +0000 UTCI think a refresh is fair as long as 1 - your ok with it and 2 - plenty of notice is made before the refresh occurs.

2023-12-08 17:07:57 +0000 UTCi think the most active participants should get the better say, so yes, refresh the list. even if this means i will never find a way to make you play legend of the dark witch games

2023-12-08 17:05:16 +0000 UTCIf you want, I could write up an application to get a list of current patrons via the patreon api and give it to you. Could just run the application whenever you feel like refreshing and cut out the need to opt-in at all. There's some problems there, like what if a patron explicitly wants to opt *out*, but in that case I could just write a blacklist filter as well.

2023-12-08 17:05:05 +0000 UTCmy perspective is that i will continue my support as i enjoy the few series i watch, i just don't have time for most of them. i have no idea what half the terms used here are and the last time i suggested a game was before the pandemic. the games you have been playing are pretty great, this community has good, diverse taste!

2023-12-08 17:04:28 +0000 UTCI think having an occasional refresh can only be a good thing. It doesn't take that much to just... reaffirm that you're around, either through discord or other messages, right? And I think it's totally fair to expect people who are giving money to be paying attention to the thing they are giving money to.
