The Future of My Writing

I've been considering writing a patreon exclusive story for members. Obviously, this wouldn't mean the end of Count of Serenno any time soon, but it would mean dividing my time and attention between two stories. I was thinking the story I write could be chosen by paid members. If the members vote for me to write a new story, I would create a new seperate poll, pitching different ideas for the members to choose from. The story doesn't have to be a Youjo Senki or Star Wars related and could even be an original fiction if that's what the community wants.

I think you might have a misunderstanding about how patreon for writers works: People never join patreons to pay for something they don't know about or don't know if they will enjoy. You will never make money off a patreon-exclusive story; no-one will hear about it and no-one will want to support something they don't know if they will like. (You could say books are the exception... Well publish a book and you will see how hard that is. Impossible without a massive publishing company behind you.) The way the Patreon model works for writers right now is very similar to how drug dealers keep addicts on the hook, or how micro-transactions exploit FOMO and addiction to get people to pay for more. Let me explain: A reader joins patreon specifically because they have read and get into a story (addiction), and desperately want more off it (Their "fix"). They are then told that for just a measly $3 a month, they can get early a whole 10 chapters! 10 chapters a month for just $3! What a deal! Well, in reality it isn't actually. Once someone joins the patreon, they are getting 10 new chapters immediately, but after reading them the rate they get them at is the same as if they didn't join (in other words, no different to if they were reading the free chapters). But if they leave the patreon they now have to WAIT a whole 10 weeks (assuming 1 chapter a week) to get the new chapter. So as long as they are enjoying the story they will not leave the patreon, even though it isn't providing them with any value. So the goal of an author is to make the reader "feel" as if they are getting value from their subscription, then maximize the pain of leaving the patreon after they are subscribed, and finally keep the reader constantly engaged and enjoying each chapter: and you get a steady income for as long as you keep the readers engaged enough to not stop reading. Now to be clear: This is actually great for writers and readers as well! Using this method writers can actually get financial backing from their readers and write more because of it. But unfortunately, due to human nature, no matter what people tell you no-one backs to "support the author", they only back to "get their fix" (or think they are getting it). So in summary, (TLDR) to maximize backers you need to: - Maximize perceived value (Have as many "early" chapters as possible (10-20 ideally), and write them as fast as possible (ideally once per week minimum)) - Keep chapters as interesting as possible (Don't sacrifice quality for speed) - Focus on the thing that gives people their "fix" (so no art, no side-stories (unless directly relevant to plot or is a character commenting about our MC's events from their perspective, and no other stories unless you can keep up the pace for each of them. But all the successful authors write 1 story at a time.) - Minimize cost of entry (low patreon cost) This will give you TONES of supporters fast and readers will love you because this is what they want. Good luck! Count is a super addicting read and you stumbled upon a great story people are loving. Don't lose this opportunity and you can seriously make writing a full-time thing.

For now it feels pretty clear that people want me to focus on Count of Serenno, so that's what I'll do. I think in the future a members only story will definitely be something I want. I would like to reach more audiences and increase my income with my writing, eventually I hope to be a proffessional writer with a dedicated fanbase of my own. For now, I'll persist with Count of Serenno.
