Why Were Lennon and Reagan Targeted?
Added 2022-08-27 17:53:32 +0000 UTCAfter one of our recording sessions, I asked Brett for his thoughts on the dynamics that led to John Lennon and Ronald Reagan being targeted for assassination. His answer was interesting so I decided to post it here! But this is just a warm-up for Brett's comprehensive deep dive into Mark David Chapman and his killing of Lennon, which will be posted next week.

Within the FBI in the early 70s, Lennon was internally regarded as the most dangerous man in America. He openly speculated about being assassinated and shortly thereafter (in 1972), he dropped out of politics, coincidentally avoiding deportation shortly thereafter, only to drop out of music in 1975 and be promised US citizenship in 1981. Lennon was the lead singer and spiritual symbol of the most influential musical movement in the history of the world. He was the top pop cultural "influencer," in the lingo of today--or he was before he dropped out. A lot of what was going to be rolled out by the military-industrial complex in the 80s would be compromised if Lennon revived 60s-style activism instead of the Band Aid-We Are the World style of pseudo activism in music that ended up prevailing.

2022-08-28 01:36:43 +0000 UTCI am apprehensive about listening to this one. I never understood why Lennon was taken down. After all, McCartney wrote all but five of the Beatles songs.
