You can’t blame them for wanting retirement/ college money for their kids. After 30 years skating, you don’t give a fuck about whether people will think you’re cool or not, you care about your family’s standard of living. The fault lies with the old head-honchos placing way too much stock in said old head skaters. They’re a sticking plaster for skate companies and the industry as a whole. If they put all their eggs in the ‘old head’ basket, they’re gonna pump and dump their most precious and perishable asset of cultural capital (vitality, relevance) and eventually devalue skateboarding as a profitable industry. For some of them, that might not be an issue: ASICS for example, aren’t wedded to skateboarding. Neither are new balance. Ironically, Reynolds is a relatively good example of a company owner who mostly does the opposite. He invests what he can in a bunch of kids and keeps his eyes open all the time, then rinses and repeats. P.s. Rocco was the best.
