SIDEQUEST Issue 20 Preview

SIDEQUEST is the monthly RPG magazine focused on providing you with usable 5e compatible material, as well as articles to inspire your creativity, and it's packed with options for GMs and players alike.

Greetings gamers and welcome to the preview for issue 20 of SIDEQUEST magazine.

Well, 2023 is already off to a spicy start! 

No sooner had I finished producing the promo materials for what would have been a somber issue 20, bemoaning the state of the third party publishing scene and all the Open Gaming License, when WotC drop the bombshell that they are backing down. Leaving the OGL alone, and what’s more, putting the entirety of the 5.1 SRD into creative commons. 

This means that there’s no longer any need to use the OGL, as that license just granted you the use of the specific expression of text in the SRD, which is now CC. 

From this point forward, all 5e material produced in SIDEQUEST will be done using the CC 4.0 version of the SRD. This will make no difference to you as the reader, but means that we no longer have the sword of Damocles hanging over us as a third party publisher!  

Issues 20 and 21 were intended to be a reactionary publishing of a lot of the back catalogue of work from our writers to make sure their hard work got published and wasn’t threatened by the proposed OGL changes, so we’ve got a shorter issue this month with only 3 articles. 

Fortunately, thanks to the news about the SRD entering the creative commons, issue 21 can have additional material added to it, so only this issue is impacted. 

Moving forward, I still intend to start publishing content compatible with Pathfinder 2e, as well as more system-neutral content alongside our 5e content, but it no longer needs to replace it.

Magical Flora

The first article in this issue is a collection of magical flora from Ben Doherty to bring your world to life. Each new plant has a gameplay effect as well as information on where you would normally find them. 

The Sweet Temptress

Jack Weighill brings us a new plant monster in the Sweet Temptress. This creature lures is victims to their doom with a blast of pheromones.  

Camp Catastrophe

And finally for Issue 20 we have a new light-hearted adventure for level 1 characters that sees them attend a fantasy adventure camp and deal with all the camp-based shenanigans therein.

How do I get SIDEQUEST?

SIDEQUEST issue 20 will be available to patrons at the $5 tier and above throughout the next month. After that it will be available to $10 patrons as well as on DrivethruRPG and the Icarus Games website as a single issue.

How Often Will Issues Be Released

SIDEQUEST is released monthly.

Will the PDF be Bookmarked?

Yes! Every issue has embeded bookmarks on each article to make navigation easier. There is a contents page that is linked to each article, a sidebar for quick navigation, and all the page numbers take you back to the contents page, making navigation on any device a breeze!
