Captain Cirilo Webster is what his universe calls a "Saint" - a senior officer of the Santiago Corporation, the people with a complete monopoly on interstellar travel.

He's spent a decade doing the Company's dirty work in their CorpSec branch, a service that cost him an arm but gained him enough trust and favor that he now has command of his own ship.

Of course, his ship is small and old, which makes it hard to find cargo. So when a university wants to launch a research expedition to an uninhabited system, his ship is just about perfect.
