Valence : a lightweight(for now) magic combat addon

I always wanted to role-play as a spellsword, but the flow simply doesn't feel right. The recent publication of Inquisitor armor(https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrimspecialedition/mods/73980) made me want to do it again. 

So here it is: Val-ence is my attempt to not fix, but to enhance Skyrim's magic combat flow to be more fast-paced and skill-based. For now, valence will center around its one and only core mechanic: ward blocking.

All magic wards now have 0 cost. It's done by overwriting game data once they're all loaded i.e. mods that add new spells will be compatible out-of-box.

You can indefinitely hold up a magic ward, but it still breaks once ward health reaches 0. Holding up a ward now constantly regenerates your magicka, at the cost of stamina drain. Successfully blocking incoming attacks(arrows/spells/melee attacks) also regenerates magicka.

The above changes encourage offense-defense role switching rather than kiting the enemy(what vanilla magicians do when they're out of magicka). I'm still planning other changes such as timed ward block, so feel free to suggest! More details will come soon.

Would it be possible to make the player automatically cast a ward spell when clicking a set button?

Maybe the ability to "catch" projectile spells in an empty hand or something to counter spell spam. The reward for an appropriately timed catch could be a percentage of the magika, but the risk being damage by the spell (maybe a bit extra if you miss time it badly). Also, maybe a rhythmic casting/pusling for concentration spells so you have to think a bit more than just hold left mouse button = win.

This is really cool. I love the idea that even mages will now have a reason to manage their stamina, it's kind of always been a pet peeve of mine to have a basically useless stat bar as part of the HUD. True HUD and other similar mods allow you to disable any you don't need to see all the time of course but the stack of three is a bit more aesthetically pleasing. I'd love to see an inverse of this mod that makes magicka useful to warriors. Something that enables you to block spells, resulting in magicka damage but a recharge to your stamina maybe? Not sure how well that would work both in terms of gameplay and in lore though. Hopefully someone comes up with a way to make that little blue bar useful to my Nord warriors eventually lol

Cool. I'm reminded of an old Marvel character, Justice from the New Universe. His left hand did "shields" while his right hand did an energy blast/sword. God I'm aging myself... when are you planning on releasing? Or do you plan on making it NOT lightweight? It would actually make a good "add-on" for VC.

Does this mod prevent you from casting with the other hand whilst you have a ward up? If you can, that lessens the whole "offense-defense" role switching thing.

Does sound similar to the functionality of Spellsiphon's ward system by Arctal, but I'm interested in seeing your take as a lightweight alternative. Good luck!

Awesome! I really wanted timed ward blocking to compliment Valhalla Combat for a spellsword. I think quick timed ward blocking for both melee and ranged blocking would do a lot for making magic gameplay feel more dynamic
