Without a second thought, Dayshia grabbed her steaming cup of coffee by the handle and took an immediate swig, downing her entire drink at once, not even so much as flinching when the burning beverage hit the back of her throat. The sizzling sensation simply sufficed as enough steam for her to stomp towards where the waiter once stood before sliding the next spot underneath the plastic rock arch above her. Dayshia clutched her chest as the tart, fiery taste sunk its fangs into her at long last, yet she kept marching all the same. Her heartbeat rose to a constant drumming when her eyes widened and she put her arm on the structure, coughing sporadically when the bitter flavor finally took hold well after the hotness settled.
Dayshia wretched into her coat sleeve when her throat cleared and her stomach roared, her intestines twisting in on themselves at last. If she were lucky, she might be able to surprise Toni with a fart, but more likely, it would be wiser to leave unless she wanted to personally fumigate the entire building with a single fart. Surely that couldn’t have been them now if they were still working that other job. The last time Dayshia met Toni outside of the gas station, they were practically on the verge of collapse; arms heavy and breath shorter than their own stature. Working a twelve hour shift sucked the life out of them before spitting it back in their face for another grueling day behind the register. Maybe that time spent away must have done them some favors considering how much chipper they were when Dayshia last met them? She remembered what they said once they met up at the front desk ready to check out.
“We’re still breaking hearts like we blow out farts, I see!”
God, did they actually sound like that? Dayshia blew air from her nostrils at the thought. A small grin met across her face as her jaws cooled down for the first time since before she took the drink. Obviously, she knew what Toni said must have been a joke, just not a great one at that. Still, Toni tried their hardest, and she could count on them for that if nothing else.
