Three weird games walk into a podcast

In a year of oddball video games, this episode's collection may be the most surprising: a soccer RPG that's more interested in the team's drama than the action on the field, a roguelike in which your characters will die no matter what, and a Sega Saturn-style shmup inspired by the most iconic PlayStation 1 game.

Video games are everything all at once!

Holy crap, Chris, you said very similar things about Birdcage as I have written about in a piece I'm working about intrinsic motivation and enjoying games without narrative or progression based motivations as someone who plays games for mostly those experiences. It's so cool to hear someone else have the same incredible experience I had with this little obscure gem of a game. I'll link it when it's published.

Chris - I recently started playing 1000xResist and have been absolutely blown away by the narrative, art direction, and audio. Do you have any other recommendations for narrative-driven games of similar quality? Thank you.

It's worth noting that Level-5 used AI-generated images for some of the assets in Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road; they admitted as much in an interview. There's no indication whether or not those assets were removed since said interview, but there's no disclaimer on the Steam page about it. Obviously, whether people want to support the game or not is up to them, but the information feels relevant and necessary. On a lighter note, I agree that y'all should keep talking about eggs. There's been a bevy of egg-based games lately; you've talked about Terry Cavanagh's new game, Egg, as well as Arctic Eggs. Last year, Egg Squeeze was released, and recently we've gotten Egging On and Evil Egg as well. Eternity Egg is coming to early access soon, too.

Chis! Magdalena Bay is so good! Discovered them in 2019 and every new album is so different. You hear the new singles?

The Resties should obviously be a mostly egg-focused podcast. You must hide your heart on the Besties though, the McElroys are simply too cruel to sweet Russ

As someone who recently moved to Poland knowing 0 polish, can confirm the fear Russ felt is real—I feel it every time I go to the store.

I love Birdcage. My favorite Robin Williams movie.

I can’t help with something like Tactical Breach Wizards, but my favorite game of the genre Before Baldur’s Gate 3 was Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. The first one gets all the attention but the sequel (by the same Obsidian that released all these games this year) is my preference, in no small part due to its storytelling (especially since the first one is kinda hitting a lot of the same beats from the movies). Now, I wouldn’t lie to you and say there aren’t caveats. I’ll admit there’s a lot I overlook from nostalgia and going in with bias toward the IP. It had a premature release that affects its quality near the end. But what draws me in is the time they have to linger and ask questions about the setting and the philosophy that governs it that the movies and shows just don’t have time to. It’s not BG3 in terms of its gameplay or narrative branches and player freedom because it came out nearly 20 years prior but I don’t think I would appreciate video game narratives and search out the games the way I do today without that formative game.

Just like Russ in ~2 months, I also just started taking Polish classes! Not directly related to that, I work in videogame localization; what are some games that have been localized into English that striked you as sounding a bit awkward or perplexing? I think I recall you talking about Lies of P in similar terms

The Magdalena Bay call-out completely caught me off guard. Okay? Maybe I SHOULD try this game....
