Our most anticipated indies for the rest of 2024

The Steam Next Fest recently concluded, but not before the Resties dove into the Scrooge McDuck-style pool of demos. We found some awesome games worth adding to your Wish List.

Many of our wonderful listeners also shared some favorites from the demo dump, so we passed them along in this episode.

Question for all you video game book club members

What is a great game to play on the 4th of July?

Comments

Wednesday is also so great!

Kathryn

Have yall played Dicefolk yet? Seems right up Griffins alley, maybe others as well.

Matt Longo

Tiny Glade is such an incredible weed game. It's also wild how well it incorporates stuff and builds things that make sense. I used that demo to sketch out ideas for DnD terrain and it rules.

Raneff Winters

Have any of the Besties crew watched Agents Of Mystery on Netflix? It’s a Korean reality show by the person who made Devil’s Plan and is essentially two 3 episode arcs where a bunch of celebrities do incredibly elaborate escape rooms. It’s fantastic fun.

Brock Wager

Thanks!

Chris

It's funny to me that Chris has a terror memory of a kids movie. I can't watch WALL-E because it made me so scared of being alone and ruining the planet 😂. Scariest kids movie in my mind

Caleb Ackerman

Just wanted to say as someone who has educational experience with zoo stuff that a *lot* of research goes into making sure that the animals are as happy and healthy as possible. I recommend looking into AZA Accreditation if you want to know more :)

Kel

I'm glad to know that someone else out there was as traumatised as I was/am by the children's movie Happy Feet.

Luke Davies

What does Plante say he’s playing right before he recommends Matinee? What I Think I Heard isn’t coming up in a google search. Thanks!

I was relistening to an old Besties and walking downtown this morning, and a well-dressed older woman asked if I could direct her to the post office. I pulled out my headphone jack (which usually makes the audio stop) to reply to her but for some reason this time it just started playing from the phone really loud, right on Griffin clearly enunciating “…it is FUCKED UP that…” 🫣😆

Katie LaBarbera

I’m glad Frush called out the Surf’s Up/Happy Feet confusion pretty quick. I was so taken aback that it wasn’t being addressed.

PokéRedstone

Chris, just remember that you have to say “rest” twice in a row. “RESTIES, where the REST.”

Please please please PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE consider checking out the incredible puzzle horror game, "Homebody". It's got PS1.5 graphics, puzzles, the horrifying dread of hearing the final words of your best friend as they complain about an open window making them cold after a horrifying monstrosity pulled itself out of the walls of the mansion you are in and gutted them like a fish, and characters that I am willing to bet you will be blown away by. I don't like puzzle games. They make me feel dumb. Homebody and Outer Wilds are the best puzzle games I have ever played, and I absolutely think that they belong in the same category as each other. Both games have a very real "if you're stuck, go do something else until you unstick" approach to puzzles Also, it's made by the studio that made Dream Daddy: A Dad Dating Simulator (which is to say: Game Grumps). It is in no way a funny game, though, and honestly tackles heavy concepts like OCD, depression, aging, what the kids call "rotting", better than anybother game I have ever played. I think Justin would adore it, as well

DMAN

I know this is a bit late and maybe it was already said somewhere already but I listened to "The Saboteur" episode recently and wanted to make a correction. Plante and Frushtick were speculating about the inclusion of the "nudity code" and missed the main reason. The code wasn't included to entice people to try the online store or because it was planned as DLC before Pandemic Studios was shuttered. The content was 100% always on disc. The included download code was because at that time publishers wanted to use the new online functionality to get some return from the second hand market. It was long before microtransactions and live service so is was uncharted territory in regards to moonitization and publishers at the PS3/360 era would always lock one part of the game, almost always the multiplayer part like the online matchmaking of Fifa or CoD, behind a one time one use code that would be included in the physical package but would cost $10 for people who who bought it second hand. For single player only games like "The Saboteur" they would then lock some functionality of the campaign instead.

Weird way for Russ to give that definition: “pipistrello” is simply Italian for “bat” (animal)!

witchcatcher

michaelsoftexcel

Geoff N

It's 7 in the morning and you're making me depressed about Happy Feet

Jenna Stoddard

A 4th of July game? Let's go with Rocket League. You can paint your cars red white and blue, fly a little American flag on your antenna, and set off fireworks every time you score a goal!

billfromamerica

Check out Fireworks Mania on Steam! Play with fireworks without the fear of blowing your fingers off :)

PaxSnax

A good game to play on the 4th of July? Maybe Geometry Wars?

Thomas Barker

Okay, which one of The Besties is rocking with MJ Lenderman? AOTY incoming.
