The engine we're using for Kingdom of Deception is Ren'py, which was created for visual novels. Though we hope to create a game that's much more than that, we did choose it because we wanted to take advantage of its strengths by putting emphasis on interactions with characters, with various twists and consequences.
Today we're going to show you one of the minor NPCs we haven't revealed yet: an orc named Jadk. He's just a bartender in the camp, not a major player, but he demonstrates how character interactions help tie together many of the other systems we've been introducing in these previews.
It's possible for Sabia to work in the bar, as one of many ways to earn money. But we don't want any of the jobs to be just clicking for cash. You need to talk to Jadk to get the job in the first place, and how you interact with him will affect how things go. As the game goes on, he'll remember whether or not you ignored him entirely, worked at the bar, or got to know him better.
As development goes on, we'll continue to add various characters to help flesh out the world we're creating. Not only do we hope they'll make the game more interesting to play, we think they'll make the consequences more real when it comes time to make life or death decisions.
You'll get to fuck some of them, too. We're sure you were wondering about that. ;P
