And the nominations are...
Added 2025-01-10 22:35:39 +0000 UTC1. Nosferatu 2. Suspiria 3. Eyes Wide Shut 4. Heretic
The Shining actually scored higher than Heretic but there was a lot of crossover with the Kubrick votes and I'd rather have more balanced options for people to choose from. Also I think if I put two Kubrick films in there it's essentially just splitting the Kubrick vote.
If you have an hour to rot your brain you can listen to me going through all your suggestions in the video below. I doubt it will be informative OR entertaining but I'd like your honest opinion on the new microphone I bought. This is actually why the results in the video are from yesterday and I'm posting this late tonight, because I have been trying to make it sound good/like normal and so far I cannot. There are editing mistakes I noticed in the video but I have just spent six hours going back through trying to better the audio and ended up right back at the start, so you're getting the video as I exported it last night because I'm going to have a mental breakdown if I keep messing with it. Rest assured that if I can't get it to sound 'like normal but better' I will just go back to my old microphone. But for right now at least I'd like to hear your opinions on it because I've just muddled my brain and it all sounds terrible.

Do a review of why Nosferatu sucks compared to The Witch…

2025-02-04 00:24:52 +0000 UTCAgain I will advocate for Heretic. So many themes to explore: Comparative lit, religion, final girl tropes, serial killer tropes, MORMONISM...it's a treasure trove.

2025-01-28 14:01:28 +0000 UTCI’m interested in The Shining, A Dark Song and Smile

2025-01-14 00:47:06 +0000 UTCI forgot to suggest Everything Everywhere All at Once. I haven't looked at any other analysis of the film but could be interesting.

2025-01-11 19:20:26 +0000 UTCNice. I say this though, Nosferatu was great but wasn’t what I thought it would be. I put all of Eggers films on re watch before nosferatu

2025-01-11 13:25:09 +0000 UTCLooking through the list I wish I'd voted Parasite now! Looking forward to the video though 👍 Are you going to finish your video on Rust & Marty 🤔

2025-01-11 09:44:48 +0000 UTCOh shit! I didn't even notice that lol. I've been binging your videos, specifically the hereditary and VVitch videos (going through the midsommar one now) and it's all fantastic. just a few minutes ago I subscribed to the patreon and have to look though all the content still I guess 😅.

2025-01-11 03:31:07 +0000 UTCHey man glad to have you on board! It would be the modern Suspiria, yeah - but if you have a look through my videos you will find a 3 hour reaction/commentary to it already!

2025-01-11 03:27:26 +0000 UTCI'd love for Nosferatu, but I'm also very interested in suspiria. Would you be doing the 1970 version or the 2018? Also mad gods is fantastic and you should 100% get around to it at some point. Really loving the content and keep up the great work my guy. You, without exaggerating have the best analyses I've seen on the Internet 🙏.

2025-01-11 03:25:24 +0000 UTCMiyazaki films have amazing dubs. It's really a matter or your preference. The boy and the heron is his most recent release and it seems to touch on Japanese identity in a way I don't fully comprehend. It is one of his most complex films in my estimation. I gave it a light recommendation because of the same cultural barriers you touched on with Parasite. Also big oof on not using spell check, haha.

2025-01-11 02:05:39 +0000 UTCThe Banshees of Inisherin is Martin McDonagh not Yorgos, though fair mistake since both directors use a lot of Colin Farrell! Martin McDonagh's first movie In Bruges is a great complement to Banshees—it's another dark buddy dramedy centered on Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson's character's relationship which adds emotional depth to Banshees because you feel like you've witnessed their plight over 15 years. Haven't read anything about the films but I took Banshees and the recasting of Farrell/Gleeson as an homage to the legacy of In Bruges.

2025-01-10 23:59:00 +0000 UTCI was also on my way to add something else to the topic of the movie choice : I feel like (imho) adding Nosferatu was maybe not the greatest idea because, since it's a very recent movie, it is something many people talk about and have in mind at the moment. And, in general, I feel like your audience would watch anything Eggers or Aster related, because those two directors' movies are always so rich, people would always support a video around their work. So I think it would be clever to avoid that in a future poll. But that's just my point of view!

2025-01-10 23:50:19 +0000 UTCNo worries, my pleasure! I remember a looong time ago watching a Q&A from a Youtuber who explained he was using a specific tool for balancing the sound from his videos to follow a certain standard. I never had more details but I realized there is often no simple way to equalize sounds or it's just not thought about, and so the volume can vary so much in between videos. But posting here for feedback is a great idea, we're here to help !

2025-01-10 23:46:46 +0000 UTCI think you're right dude, I stripped everything off it (including the makeup gain) and just put a very slight compressor and autogate on and I think it's sounding a lot better now. It's a SHURE SM7B and from what little I understand it's just very low gain. So I think the answer was to turn it up a lot, and then do very little. Unfortunately for this video I'd done a lot AND THEN turned it up a lot and it sounds like a nightmare. I don't want to spam people with pointless videos but I may post a soundcheck when I'm certain I've got it right. Thank you for the feedback though it is really helpful and runs in line with what I was concerned with!

2025-01-10 23:37:36 +0000 UTCHi Novum, if I'm painfully honest, the mic sounds worse in the video than the older one, but it probably has a lot to do with settings, it sounds mildly saturated and at too high of a volume in general? I hope you get it figured out. But it's hard to compare with this issue. Thank you also for your work, as usual.

2025-01-10 23:35:51 +0000 UTCOkay, thanks. I'll keep that in mind. I'm very happy to be surprised by Ghibli, I've just historically had a difficult time getting into anime! I'm trying to think of any I've seen and enjoyed and I'm drawing a blank. I think maybe because I missed out Pokemon/DBZ as a kid I just never got into the aesthetic.

2025-01-10 23:31:39 +0000 UTCI would love to see some analysis on the singing detective. The original series is transcendent, the movie remake is unwatchable lol

2025-01-10 23:04:30 +0000 UTCI know many anime fans have very strong opinions on dubs vs subs for things, and I'm generally on the side of subtitles, mostly cause I think there's a LOT of bad dubs out there. Ghibli movies pretty much all are the best dubs I've seen though, and I'm perfectly fine watching either version, if I'm watching with someone else I'll just go with whatever they prefer
