Suspiria (2018) - Reaction/Commentary

I should point out that there's a lot of nudity and gruesome imagery in this video, please be aware it's probably not one to watch at work/around the family/while you're eating.
As with The Longlegs video, please don't go in expecting 'complete guide' levels, this is just an extended commentary/reaction to the film. If you haven't seen Suspiria I really would recommend watching it before this video, there are spoilers here from the outset.

2024-11-21 03:35:30 +0000 UTCI saw you posted this a while ago and made a point not to watch it until I went to watch this movie that's been on my Amazon watch list for years but I just hadn't seen it yet. Hearing you point out all the reasons that you knew she would be the mother makes me feel like I must've not been paying enough attention because I really did not see that coming. I was even surprised that she was agreeing to be possessed or whatever. Lol. Loved this movie it was fantastic. Love your review of it as always, amazing work Sir! Also am I going crazy or should we be hearing sound from the movie?

2024-10-10 19:55:40 +0000 UTCI can't answer your questions regarding this movie and the larger mid-20th century history of Germany, but I know many Mennonites in the US are of German descent. So, I think there is an implication there of Suzy/Dakota not only reclaiming the coven, but her own German heritage/history in general. Also, an interesting detail in the movie is that Suzy/Dakota's eyes go from blue to brown/black during the final performance and remain dark for the rest of the movie. Another interesting detail is the actor who plays Suzy/Dakota's mother also plays the 'mother of the damned' creature at the end of the movie. Suzy's real mother dies, and is replaced/resurrected by/as the shadow/avenging spirit. You could also say 'Suzy' is short for 'Suspiria'. I don't think there is any doubt at all that that character is the title character, the movie is about how she comes to power, not her knowing/not knowing who she is, or the audience not knowing, IMO. Love your insights and work and am looking forward to the VVitch guide!!!

I think we are led to see Blanc as a foil with the bio mother — one nurtures the animalistic/“dark feminine” whereas the other is implied to be more of a “devouring mother” who locks her child in a cupboard for misbehaving. I think she was caught masturbating in the cupboard, so in a sense the entire film is a reclamation of self. The “boudoir orb” I don’t think is directly Blanc but more about a latent but ever-growing sense of destiny and power. The dream images are a fascinating study. Much like the tension of coming of age in The VVitch. The “scarlet letter” of blood, bloodied underwear… Obviously the “Great Mother” gives life and death. I don’t remember the three names — sighs, tears, and? — but the maiden/mother/crone comparison deserves a scrutinizing rewatch on my part. Looking forward to the complete guide!

Just going to use this comment to rant for a moment - the level of idiocy on display regarding Chappell Roan not endorsing Kamala has been staggering and disappointing and yet more evidence that any political sense of dignity has been stripped in favour of 'Us vs Them'.
