Rust Blue with Bob and Mark

Our last rusting video is old, poorly filmed, poorly explained, and just plain sucks. This one is better.  It is meant to be shown on his site, so it has no Anvil ident on the head or tail. The one you will see on YT will have that missing detail.

Cant thank y'all enough for the patience as we reconfigure operations . Thanks.....

Rust Blue with Bob and Mark

Comments

The old rust bluing books often refer to "corrosive sublimate," which in modern parlance is mercuric chloride, the chloride salt of mercury. I'd advise anyone experimenting with rust bluing solutions to stay far, far away from mercury compounds (if you could find them). Experiment with less toxic and aggressive salts like ammonium chloride, ferric chloride, or nitrates.

Thank you for the video. I have done several projects using the techniques outlined. Works great using Bob's Rust Blue products.

A dumb question? Can conversion be done using the steam box or does the piece have to be in contact with the boiling dihydrogen monoxide? If in contact will a wee drappie of detergent help?

Great video, the older one got me started about a year ago. I have blued over 20 guns since. I spent maybe 400 to get set up nicely to do it. I bought a 30" stainless tank for converting for $100, built a damp box with scrap lumber and a $100 dollar power bar that has humidity and temp sensors so it self regulates. Lastly i bought the carding wheel from brownells. Not the cheapest way to go, but still inexpensive and a fairly deluxe set up.

Ah, toluene, MEK and acetone. Good times late at night patching dry suits and CRRC's in the boat and dive locker. I'll have to be buried encased in concrete or the graveyard will become a Superfund site.

i always learn so much! I have so many to clean and to do the maintenance

Found that book on eBay I actually paused your video and bought it the finished I love you video’s and have been using some of the techniques you showed actually to make repairs to the trim on my old farm house. Thanks so much

So I had tried rust blueing a couple guns using a home made acid solution, Inspired by your first video. Now I realize I wasn't allowing the part to "ripen" correctly. Great video as always, Mark!

I know what I'm going to do to the bayonet I found in a trash pile that I've been hauling around since I was in the third grade. It is similar to the one in the video. It was in an old leather scabbard.

Not something I would try, for now, but it’s nice to understand the process. Thanks for another great video.

The first video worked well enough to get me through two projects, thanks for the update.

Talk about good timing! I was planning on bluing an SMLE tomorrow using notes from the original Anvil videos so this is great. Thanks for everything!

I've watched that first video at least 4 times, so this update is going to be must watch too.

That first rust blue video is what got me stuck on you guys. Now it's almost an addiction.
