Bret have you seen “Black Bag”? One of my favorite recent movies. It’s a soderbergh spy movie with a very tightly focused/minimalist feel. Also, on the broader point of movies and blandness, I believe it’s the death of religion. This may seem strange but go with me. Religion posits something like a stable sense of human nature. That humans are not a blank slate, but a creature with a certain nature that can bend, but even bending it comes at a cost. Stories today do not wrench the soul because filmmakers today do not believe in human nature. They write from a perspective of blank slate-ism or current-thing-ism. We viewers (still being human) still have a human nature. Leading to a mismatch resulting in unsatisfying stories. Love the podcast!
