I agree about manhunter

K.D.F.

more artistic, maybe...Friends is great entertainment, Frasier is Great Art...but better? I dunno bout that

Neil G.

Curb totally gets a pass and is debatably more un-PC than Seinfeld

Wil Kelly

Frasier is a LOT better than Friends

Wil Kelly

WIND is a great film

Justin Ketrinchek

I've been a big admirer of Michael Mann mainly because of MIAMI VICE (the original TV series). It was syndicated in Europe, and I remember watching it religiously every Wednesday night after doing my homework (I was about 15). It was groundbreaking TV for the time, it was the perfect mix of many things: the action, the humor, the style/fashion, the sexy Miami vibe, the cars, the planes, the boats, and of course ... the music. With great actors/guest stars. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CdKeep2huQ Crockett's theme is one of my all-time favorites: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dW84iQ8MNhA But I think Bret was already too old at the time (20) to be interested in this show, and I guess Don Johnson wasn't his style, haha.

FlyingWaffle

Miami Vice is bad… but the let’s get a mojito with the speedboat is aahhh, beautiful!

Mauricio Gonzalez Lara

Truly curious as to what Bret would think of Frasier. On one hand, I could see him liking the show because it revolves around a media therapist who is largely pretentious, insecure, & fails to live up to the advice he doles out to listeners on his radio show, particularly in regard in interpersonal relationships. Furthermore, there is much satire of Frasier’s & Niles’ upper-class cosmopolitan elitism. On the other hand, I could see Bret not liking the show since some episodes can be formulaic in that Frasier ruins so many relationships & squanders so many opportunities due to his aforementioned flaws & insecurities & as a result, conclusions of said episodes tend to be ones that are predictable

Ryan Peck

Time stamp for when he talks about it?

Billy Vega

So agree with Brett on Monsters , best miniseries I've seen in a long time.

Michael Madonna

Dude Bret is so off about Michael Mann. Carlitos Way and Collateral are fn great. Yes second half of his career sucks and Blackhat was unwatchable for me. But I actually prefer Manhunter to Silence. Thief is great too.

Alexander Quattlander

Yeah the show started out engaging with the soundtrack and very 'Bret Easton Ellis' feel of vapid homoeroticism with dark edge then pivoted weirdly into leftist victim narrative before pivoting back again to a more balanced 'we need to see all angles' type vibe. It really tried to have cake and eat it too! The critics wanted it to be a victim pity party and the fact it left things open to doubt and interpretation outraged many.

Billy Vega

I just ordered Slaves Of New York and A Cannibal in Manhattan. Looking forward to reading them.

Iain

HEAT is the masterpiece. Miami Vice is a weird mesmerizing piece of bad yet engaging by an auteur. I thought Bret would like it. Manhunter is 80s fever dream mad genius a LOT like the Less than Zero movie in that aspect. Silence of the Lambs is good but for an aesthetics obsessive how can he not appreciate Manhunter? SOL is good but Demme didn't create an evocative atmosphere like Mann. Blackhat was indeed decent. It captured something about 2010s paranoia not knowing your enemies. The Insider is also one of those great 1999 classics. And like many 99 movies is red pilled and tells us THE WORLD AS WE SEE IT IS NOT AS IT ACTUALLY IS and the ONLY WAY OUT is to disregard 'safe' institutions and follow some sort of maverick path. One of the best uses of music of all time in the closing of that movie. Slow motion walking in leather. Come on Bret.

Billy Vega

Love this one!

Liis Vilipson

I'm a FIEND for MOJITOS.

Johnny Blade

It’s Cronenberg, not Kronenberg. 😂🙈

Mauricio Gonzalez Lara

Sea of Love always gets skipped over. Love it and I think it’s the one that got Pacino out of his slump.

Mary Walker

That's not quite true, I'm afraid. Former NYT culture reporter Dave Itzkoff was involved. It is a nice read however, though maybe not quite as juicy as one might have wished for.

I Wish I Was a Trawler

Love to hear Bret’s thoughts on the new SNL movie. Really enjoyed it.

Sodaheiress

Looking forward to Pacino’s memoir, particularly since he did not use a ghost writer.

Sodaheiress

the substance is a typical “kronenberg for the dummies” movie. there is nothing of deep meaning or substance. it tells you and shows you multiple times what the movie is about and makes sure every moron get it by the last scene with a face on a star. really surface level satire.

Oleg

Tama Janowitz’s Slaves of New York was the funniest and most enjoyable thing I read all summer. Liked it better now than when I first read in high school, in the 80s. Her memoir was undermined somewhat by that quality of not being impressed with herself (charming in her fiction) and she misses an opportunity to exploit her experience as a legit 80s literary it-girl.

Morgan Hobbs

I was thinking the exact same thing, the producers desperately trying to coax Bret to leave his bed and getting screamed at would be a great scene

Lionel

It sounds like he went full Diva… full Elton John

Lionel

Where does it rank ? The OJ one was solid gold, David Schwimmer was hilarious in it… he truly loved The Juice

Lionel

congrats on the psycho adaptation🫡.

Oleg

You could tell it wasn't LA.

Alexander Quattlander

Catcher in the Rye is an addicting great read better for adults even tho the main character is a teen. Altho I am not crazy about the ending it's still a masterpiece with a unique voice.

Alexander Quattlander

Do you know which season that episode was ? Love to hear it.

Sodaheiress

The Substance was shot in France, not LA

Oscar

Absolutely.

Alethia St. Joan

Of course it is. Manhunter also.

Mauricio Gonzalez Lara

Bret went full diva with his producers!!! Very funny. On the other hand, i think Bret should do a deeper review of The substance. He got it, in general, but fails to recognize the greatness of the effort. He misses in three key aspects. To do a Cronenberg style movie would have been too easy and derivative. The punk soul of the film is going nuts and have a few good laughs at the end, mixed with the body horror. Two, its done with masterful aesthetic style. Fargeat clearly is an immersive cineaste. It puzzles me that Bret dismisses that. And three, for that reason, but also to have fun with the audience reactions, it MUST be seen in a theatre. Streaming my ass. Saludos. P.S. Adam is great. Love that he doesn’t buy Bret’s bs.

Mauricio Gonzalez Lara

Thief is a masterpiece ❤️

Alethia St. Joan

Frasier is hysterical, one of my all time faves.

Alethia St. Joan

Fuck yes.

Alethia St. Joan

George Quartz

Solid ep!!

Harold B

The horror… THE HORROR…

FlyingWaffle

Doesn’t like Thief but likes Blackhat ?????????

Lionel

would love to hear bret talk more about the ryan murphy menendez brothers show and about the case more broadly. i think cooper koch was the stand out of the show and has a look that would work really well for the shards

rbkhe

Just watched Frasier in its entirety (over the course of a year) and I fucking loved it, go watch it Bret! (Not as good as News Radio tho)

TheRealAudreyHorne

It could be in the style of that movie within the movie Avry did for Rules of Attraction. “Rome was like LA with ruins.”

Keith campbell

These Ryan Murphy shows are like crack cocaine for me. "Grotesquerie" isn't really hitting for me though. I would actually love to see Murphy's team adapt one of Bret's books.

John Q. Thompson

The P/S experience sounds amazing! Thanks for all the details--fascinating

E

Adam’s reaction to Frasier and tv is cracking me up

M. Nero Nava

Beatrice Dalle? Men of a certain generation watch Betty Blue and you may want to have sex

T Frick

Since I'm here, and what else would I be doing, I decided to write this comment.

FlyingWaffle

I’d love to hear Bret do a full review of Monsters: The Lyle & Erik Menendez Story, which I agree is wildly entertaining and was totally misunderstood by our current class of moralistic TV critics.

Rob Watson

Great show! I like gin blossoms too. My favorite song is Allison road, probably because it’s less played than the others, but agree that new Mis is an album one can listen through. If Brett likes this album, another similar album is Ring by the Connels. It shows heavy gin blossoms influence, but has something of its own. A stand out song is 74-75. I think Brett would really like it, a listen through album as well. In fact I would like to get his opinion of it. In return for this precious Pearl of info, I want him to make a mix tape for us!

Stephen Curry

Has there ever been discussion of Schnabel’s films?

Coats & Ties

Would be SO curious to hear your take on the new release "Emilia Perez"...

Laura B. Farrugia

The Substance was filmed in France.

Dan Palmer

My grandma and grandad would go there once a year for a cheapo holiday.

Dan Palmer

you are retarded, and Bret thought Barbie was good...but you are more retarded than he is 😂😂 He's not really retarded; he just says dumb things sometimes and he fucked up with that movie...on the other hand, you thought the new Joker film was great and you didn't write American Psycho...and your name is Thumperdinck 😂😂

Neil G.

Amazin’…

Michael V

Absolutely agree. He's a fantastic broadcaster. I could listen to him ramble on about literally anything. It's a shame about the interview episodes - they almost always disappoint. Not Bret's fault - it's the bland, socially constrained public life of the times. The guests come off as genteel bores on their best behaviour. If he must do interviews, he should interview non-famous LA characters, irreverent types with unusual life experience, who have stories to tell, and no reason to hold back. One of the funniest episodes was when he interviewed his boyfriend's weed dealer, remember that? A good start would be an interview with Hollywood insider @RamboVanHalen from twitter - if you know you know.

Von Wintermarck

It’s nuts that LA is so backwards that you have to travel out of LA to shoot a scene that takes place in LA

Jonathan Davis

The new Joker was great. It’s not Bret’s kind of film.

Thumperdinck

It’s remarkable how poorly traveled he is given the life he has led. He should go to Fuerteventura for a yoga retreat

Keith campbell

Marshall Crenshaw is cool. Good to hear him get a shout out, and I think Adam will like him

Keith campbell

I love The BEE podcast for its take on movies and books, but the real reason I’m a fan is because of his unique perspective on life, music, fashion, and film. I’m thrilled to hear that Relapse, his directorial debut, is likely happening soon. I can’t wait to learn more about the pre-production and production process on the podcast.

Darren

I hope he's not saying that joker crap movie is any good please I don't want to listen to it if he's going to say that I might have to cancel my subscription

Travis Films

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Would love to see Sean Baker on the pod. Just saw Anora this past weekend. Definitely the best film of the year imo. I know he was on during the PodcastOne days, so let’s get him back!

Maxwell Rinehart

Hilarious when Bret denied loving "Furiosa".. "I didn't like it that much, I didn't like it that much!"

John Q. Thompson

Bret directing a picture! Go Bret Go

Seneca Garcia

Great extract from the Pacino book in the Guardian over the weekend: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2024/oct/12/al-pacino-inside-story-of-the-godfather-told-not-cutting-it

Joe Marshall

I love how Bret talks about The Canary Islands as though they were these desolate remote places. Tenerife is one of the most popular party islands for Europeans!

David Lowe

We need Adam to travel to the Canaries with the cast and crew to film a hearts of darkness type documentary. I’d pay good money to see Bret Ellis losing the head at his producers.
