This episode was taylor-made for me, so sad to do catch-up so late...

Raúl

Thank you. Inspired to watch Room With a View again last night and it was a tonic for the soul.

Thomas Edwards

I liked the old fashioned interview style of this episode. More traditional than usual and a good fit for the topic.

Steve

Yeah, Subutex is something else.

Dan Zilic

The biggest effects would be on air streams (el nino, etc), which is what can change weather patterns the most. The local communities are the ones who directly observe (or don't) any long-lasting changes in their own area. They don't need the news/scientists/climate change skeptics to tell them what's happening when they can see it for themselves. So I don't know about LA, which seems to have a very quirky micro-climate anyway - mild weather most of the year, mountains nearby, and deserts not that far away... but here, in NYC, in the 90s/early 2000s the winters were way harsher with tons of snow (multiple real blizzards each year), and the summers had long heat waves well over 100F (blackouts were common). Now (for ~15 years) winters are a joke here (hardly any snow), and summers have consistently turned pretty mild (we didn't have any temp above 100F or even in the high 90F in a long while)

He never does

Bret, I don’t know if you read these messages but you absolutely have to read Vernon Subutex by Virginie Despentes and then have her on the pod. She was a big fan of White.

Mike in Philly

100F is not unusual for LA in September, so you’re kind of proving their point that the media’s coverage of climate change leaves people less informed, not more informed. They might have some wacky theories but their belief that progressive groups and their allies in the media misrepresent the actual likely effects of climate change because they want their programs to get money before other programs like healthcare or infrastructure spending. You see this all the time in stories that report on the likely effects of climate change had nothing been done since the 1970s, ignoring all the mitigating steps taken in the last 50 years to avert the worst outcomes. And you see this in the coverage of every hurricane or heatwave that wrongly suggests their is a direct link between Individual extreme weather incidents and climate change—this is wrong. Scientists can’t attribute individual extreme weather incidents to climate change, only the frequency with which they happen. Which is why it is absurd to believe one heatwave would be evidence that proves the effects or climate change. You should read this for some specific examples: https://www.slowboring.com/p/elite-misinformation-is-an-underrated

Someone Else

I’m in the minority but I found this ep entertaining and stirred an interest in Merchant Ivory

M. Nero Nava

Caught up with ‘The Canyons’ - out of curiosity & was surprisingly impressed (given the scorn).

Steven Hamilton

Never knew about Merchant Ivory movies , good pod

Nice episode, I didn't know Ivory was American. PS: have Bret and Adam revised their climate 'theories' after so many insane 100F+ days in LA?

FlyingWaffle

Great episode, as always!

Sodaheiress

Sorry but this was b o r i n g

J.A.

You didn't say more.

Dave Mason

I played at 2x.

Hadn’t heard, but doesn’t surprise if you consider the cost.

Dave

Excellent interview! Thanks Bret

AF

sorta voice you zone out to, lol

Christian Eden

Random thought: Bret asking Jeff Bridges as Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski on what he thinks of The Eagles

Ryan Peck

Surprised with the success of certain movies. They did not financially take advantage.

Stevan Popovic

Love that there was another FEMME shoutout. Love that film

Normaling

Once again - ‘rich film directors’…it’s all coming out now. Funny how they’re never forthcoming with this on the way up? Just found out fluffy old John Waters was bank-rolled by his daddy.

Steven Hamilton

Great episode. Thanks for reminding me of some amazing films and introducing me to some more.

Vaughan Smith

PodcastOne era Bret is back!
