I do what I want lol

Erick

Haha. Yeah that did cross my mind when writing this comment.

Dancing

I agree Brat was irresistible, it defined my generation. I love St. Elmo’s. I had no idea there was controversy over it lol,

Sodaheiress

No to Broderick being part of the pack. Spader should be though. I love him, he would make a great guest.

Sodaheiress

Industry is such a great show. Binged season 1. Can’t wait to watch season 2! Thanks Bret for the recommendation.

Darren

Hope things better 🙏

Alex Bielovich

If it wasn’t for Adam it would be an hour of Bret moping in these recent episodes

Alex Bielovich

When are we getting a Challengers review?

Phoenix

I like the Bret & Adam duo.

Phoenix

Off topic and this may have already been brought up ( I'm behind in both the pod and tv) but I was watching the bear and they used the phrase "flying fuck off a rolling donut" which immediately made me think of the Friedkin episode because he used that phrase. It was said right before a discussion about Friedkin on the show, so I'm assuming it was a BEE easter egg? The people I was watching with thought I was a bit psychic for mentioning only ever hearing Freidkin use that phrase and then the show discussing him.

July is an excellent month for deep introspection. That first question was a banger. I'm here to eavesdrop on the conversation between bret and a guest, bret and adam, bret and the platinum questions and also hearing adam have a go at answering them, sometimes building on it. adam doesn't take away from bret's greatness

sean in hawaii

like i respect the aesthetics and the camera lingering on things in the background to create suspense but at the end of the day the movie was about a bunch of beautifully made dolls with satanic orbs in their heads. and cage's performance made me lol. not a scary movie at all. terrible writing. the script felt like a first draft with a random exposition dump by alicia witt in the third act that made no sense.

Collin Myers

longlegs is bad, bro. it's not good. the opening credits were prob the best part. usually not a good sign, bro

Collin Myers

Adam. I love you bud. But the podcast is not about you. We're here for the artist: Bret. You seem like a great guy to hang with, but I'm here for Bret Easton Ellis and I'm finding the solo eps harder to listen as your wise-cracks bringing the salon-type vibe down. Your job should is to indulge the once-in-a-generation artist (which you do well well might I say), and not to try and shoehorn your quirks and opinions. Just one dude's opinion.

Dancing

Bret, If you’re looking for a great movie to watch, check out Evil Does Not Exist - the new movie from Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Director of Drive My Car). My favorite movie this year (other than Challengers).

Jeremy

OMG thank you for mentioning industry. Keep forgetting about the new season, I love the show so much!!

mia

Mark Lindquist would be a great guest! Respectfully - please up the game in the guest department… it’s not been great. more guests from inside the film industry. Isn’t this a film/literary podcast?

Roscoe

Not related to podcast but after seeing Harris Dickinson in Matthias & Maxime, he would make an excellent Robert Mallory.

KayCee

Just picked up a Brat pack, buns and mustard at Ralphs

Jack

BEE - Curious to hear if you’ve seen In A Violent Nature or Longlegs yet. Thought both were great. Exciting moment for horror. They have their flaws but found them entertaining overall.

Nick B

I liked Rob Lowe’s measured take on the whole thing. And bc I grew up with those movies as a teenager at that time I enjoyed it (and of course loved seeing Bret talk about it but you can just YouTube that and not suffer the movie if not interested). But I hear you Ashley and I’d like to see you punch him. 😀

Patrick

Calling Kristeen a “predator” is a bit harsh.

M. Nero Nava

Back off Erick, there’s only room for one predator in this comment thread!!

Ashley

You’re lucky. Me, very much so.

N.M. Janice.

Molly Ringwald reminds me of the young girl in American Graffiti.

Thomas Edwards

03:40 - nope!

Alex Bielovich

Yeah, it’s really not worth watching. Nothing new or interesting is gleaned from it.

Ashley

Initially, I was excited to watch Brats, but early feedback revealed it was nothing more than Andrew McCarthy lamenting how the Brat Pack tag hindered his career, and he spends the film seeking validation from his Brat cohorts. I found this very off-putting, so I've yet to see it. I don't blame Molly and Judd for passing on this.

Billy Schafer

Pretty pretty pretty pretty good!

Kerry

Many thanks!

Marthe Beckers

Industry...great show.

Brian Aldrich

Exactly! The documentary was horrible, imagine being 61 and still whining about such a unique experience, that arguably if it hadn’t happened would have made him more of a nobody than he’s lamenting over being. I wanted to punch him in his stupid little mouth and face!

Ashley

Same

N.M. Janice.

I found the Brats doc perplexing and forced. Why is McCarthy so hung up on a magazine article from 30 Years ago? Seems like everyone else involved has moved on. Would have been cool to see a doc about that cultural moment, the films and actors. Instead it’s McCarthy trying to force a narrative and get retribution for something that no one cares about anymore. His obsession with this cultural artifact from decades ago makes him come off as a tad bit unhinged.

N.M. Janice.

Erick, you’re hitting on Kristeen in my comment thread about the Brat Pack?

M. Nero Nava

Wow what an amazing picture you have

Erick

haven’t read him but recent guest Chandler Morrison maybe who you’re thinking of. His new book might have been compared with Bret’s work. Or Chuck Palahniuk sometimes.

Darren Ankenman

….again I just love when you two free form

PETER GREER

All I care about are you, me and my drums.

George's wife Martha

Hi Kristeen 🖤, who is your favorite Brat Pack member?

M. Nero Nava

I think anyone who was alive in 1985 is a brat pack member

Kristeen

Does anyone know what writer Bret recently mentioned saying they get compared often?

Marthe Beckers

Hot take: I think Downey, and Spader are Brat Pack members.

M. Nero Nava

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

John Hughes’s Brat Pack movies hold up because of John Hughes, not the Brat Pack. Hughes was very much an auteur, and his films were far more personal than people give them credit for. Although The Breakfast Club is my favorite, I agree with Bret that Ferris Bueller’s Day Off probably holds up best. It’s very idiosyncratic, exemplifying the quirkiest components of Hughes’s comic aesthetics (cue Star Wars theme as they garage guys soar in a vintage Ferrari against Chicago’s skyline) while underscoring the ephemeral joys and pangs of youth to a soundtrack of obscure English pop all picked by Hughes. It’s exciting, absurd, irreverent, poignant, and honest.

Billy Schafer

Good stuff. Thanks.

Sean M.

Good Brat Pack discussion. I like Pretty in Pink as a film and its soundtrack is better than Some Kind.
