Cheer up Bret. Didion was wrong about the naked women on the ledge. As homicide detectives often say. There are no coincidences.

Caleb Snyder

It took me a minute to get that, it's kind of late. Far too late for a run.

Stephen

I worked on a movie which included a supporting role played by Robert Towne’s daughter. I asked her if her dad considered naming her “China”. She wasn’t amused.

J Hay

The actor was/is Andrew SCOTT. He’s great in Ripley. As for songwriters vs. singers, that also applies to movies, plays, etc., since most actors don’t write the scripts they’re interpreting.

J Hay

Andrew Stone 😂😂

Justin Ketrinchek

Worth checking your vitamin D levels. If you don't get enough sunlight depression can be present. Luv your podcast ❤️ cheers from Australia.

Pizdetz

That was my question - appreciate the rec.

Thomas Rankin

he is based on his actual bday a boomer but i guess he just identifies as gen x

Collin Myers

Didnt Robert Towne also work on the last ep of madmen?

Dan Smith

I’d never seen Vanderpump rules until Bret sang its praises. I’m very thankful he did, because I binged the entire 11 seasons, and found so much entertainment in it. I don’t think I’d have enjoyed it as much if I had watched it as it happened, but this was the right time to revel in it. Thank you!

Mara Capozzi

For satirists, hard to beat Terry Southern—Magic Christian, Candy, Blue Movie.

Morgan Hobbs

I love that!❤️

E

💯 (I know bc I do it every single day with my ten year old girl.) BUT!!! Today when the TS album ended Apple Music played a Phoebe Bridgers song and she said, “Wow, this might be better than Taylor.” No shit.

Patrick

Update: I saw LONGLEGS and though it was excellent and something the BEE peeps definitely will dig and there are some parallels with the Shards but I don't want to be more specific and give spoilers. Even though you haven't been going to the movies, this one might be worth going to the theater for. It was my first time in a theater in almost two years and I was glad I went. I really liked Oz Perkins aesthetic and choices as director. It's doing remarkably well as it was only projected to make $7-$9 million opening weekend and it made $22 million. Highly recommended. I'd love to hear what you think about this film.

R. M.

taste is ability to separate good from bad. liking the replacements is a lucky accident when you are thinking that taylor swift is the best songwriter in the world.

Oleg

And that dog is the only dog to ever be nominated for an Oscar. Great episode.

Iain

Sure Taylor Swift might suck, but isn’t Bret a huge Replacements fan too? That kinda gives him a pass in my book.

Iain

You read my mind. If driving around LA listening to Taylor Swift doesn’t fill you with dread idk what will..

Ashley

If there was ever any question...this episode sealed it

E

Just thinking of Bret as a Swiftie--no wonder he's in a general state of malaise. And I wish he'd spent more time talking about "Network" instead of wasting it on TS

E

👋🏻

Nikki Ferrari

Also a fan. If someone thinks taylor doesnt write her own music they dont know what theyre talking about. A mere google search would correct that. Hate to break it to adam but a PRODUCER like jack antonoff absolutely had a part in the final recordings of bruce springsteens songs, along with anyone else you want to name drop. Please fuck off!!!

Nikki Ferrari

Yeah I've also heard that TV writing is kind of shady business. Adam Carolla often talked about a writer he had on The Man Show staff who never actually had any bits or skits filmed. But they kept him around because the guy was hilarious and always made the other writers laugh. And as far as music credit is concerned, we've all heard those stories about Rick Rubin where he contributed nothing more to a song than nodding his head and a thumbs up, and yet he's credited as the producer. Regardless of what the credits say, based on the level of lyrical consistency in Swift's music, I have to believe that if she has a team working on the music, they're probably there to suggest overall moods and themes of the record (Something like a producer saying, "Hey Taylor, I think your sound would work great for folk music. Let's focus on a folk pop song to open the next album.") and the much of the worker-bee labor (writing, lyrical pacing) is left for Taylor because it seems that's where her passion is (based on videos of her going through her song writing process). I think her music stands out among other pop stars because of the almost rap-like rapidity of the lyrics, and trying to outsource that to someone else can be a tricky endeavor.

Keith V Whalen

For a self-proclaimed Gen-Xer, Bret's musical tastes are very Boomerish; The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac. Ugh.

Billy Schafer

i do want to chime in on the taylor discussion as probably the only fan here to say it’s such a weird misconception that she doesn’t write her own music. i guess there are many pop stars who don’t and that’s where it comes from but some pop stars do write their own music! and in taylor’s case she would not be a pop star if she didn’t bc she’s so obviously a writer before she is a performer. she wrote her 3rd album with no co-writers in response to the criticism that she didn’t write songs by herself. i think she just enjoys the collaborative process of writing with other people because it’s fun. you can see in the documentary miss americana that her process is usually she comes in with an idea that’s pretty much a complete song and then she brings it to jack or whoever and they come up with a few lyric changes or write the bridge together but the songwriting is like 90% her and u can tell bc her music is generally very diaristic.

Shaianne

Interesting. This might be the case with tv writing also. Fallon had a guest on who said as much, can’t recall who the guest was.

Sodaheiress

Another great episode, thanks Bret and Adam. I could listen to Bret wax on about anything. I prefer the episodes without guests. I don’t enjoy every guest (Hoffs- I just found her 🥱) but that’s okay, it’s your show, and I did enjoy Bret’s enjoyment at having her on. I sense Bret’s malaise in his voice, hear me out… he said it’s been going on for 3 months, isn’t that when he started taking gummies? Unpopular opinion but it’s unhealthy and can cause depression, there are healthier options to help with sleep or anxiety. Check out Hubermans podcast, he’s got some good tips on sleep and anxiety. Another thought, Bret is clearly an introvert, as one myself I find that the older I get the harder it is to be social. Also I wish Bret would reconsider watching Ripley, Scott is fantastic. The movie is one of my favorite movies and I love the book, but I really enjoyed this fresh take.

Sodaheiress

wtf is bret talking about “mainstream media” still? it doesn’t exist anymore. joe rogan is mainstream media. charlie kirk is mainstream media. youtube is mainstream media. this isn’t nbc / cbs / abc anymore. get into it. nobody cares.

Nick Not Nolte

In regards to song writing and song writing credits: I've seen lots of "writers" credited on songs I know they absolutely had nothing to do with, making the song look like a team collaboration. I have a feeling that writing credit is more often a legal obligation than proof of creative input (maybe if someone is in the room during the writing of the final lyrics, they could be entitled to a credit). Case in point: Dr. Dre doesn't write lyrics. Never had, never will. Always had other rappers do his writing because his passion was the beats and the mixing and the overall production. Yet, if you look at Eminem's first CD, Dr. Dre is credited as writer on a number of songs. I absolutely don't believe Dre wrote a single word on that album. I'm not an Eminem fan, but I doubt anyone wrote any lyrics other than Em. And yet there are tracks with several writers. Again, I believe this is more a legal thing than some kind of proof Eminem wasn't the sole writer.

Keith V Whalen

Who Framed Roger.... Rabbit. The classic Zemeckis movie!

Thomas Davidson

Another mention of Ladies Man by Richard Price. Great book

Darren Ankenman

lol he really does. bless his heart

Brandon Cook

I made this tribute for Donald Sutherland. Check it out- it’s something BEE heads will love https://youtu.be/Pwu7SZ3dtw4?si=xYGB2f-fQZFatQx3

Matthew Moss

Lol.

Adam Long

Agreed. I don't get the hate some have for these episodes.

Adam Long

Not sure how much longer I am going to pay for a 28 minute self-pity part before anything of interest or relevance gets said

Jim Corboy

There’s a decent summary of the aborted trilogy here: http://j-j-gittes.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-third-film.html?m=1

Paul Richardson

it is not about “these people questions” but bret’s opinions on different and often interesting topics.

Oleg

bret really has an atrocious taste in music…

Oleg

Nothing can beat Palm Dior. He's a treasure.

Sértő-Radics Sarolta

Love the listener Q & A's, and how transparent and real Bret is. It's a gift. Bret definitely check out INFESTED streaming on Shudder (French horror film) and LONGLEGS with Maika Monroe & Nicholas Cage comes out in theaters in 2 days. I'm actually gonna go to the theater for this one. Looks great. Really simple and unsettling. You should also check out GOD IS A BULLET with Monroe if you haven't checked that out yet. Nick Cassavetes directed it. I like Cassavetes direction. Monroe or Cassavetes would make interesting guests.

R. M.

you sound poor

Poetical Gore

Bret actually *wrote a blurb* for the English translation of the Japanese novel (Strangers) in which he called it an “eerie and haunting ghost story” by “one of Japan’s best writers”

Oscar

Will be interesting to hear what Bret thinks of the bear season 3 when he’s done with it seeing a lot of mixed reviews

Harold B

What's your mile time?

Florence

Totally agree!

Adam Long

The third movie in the Towne trilogy was going to be about no-fault divorce? I always thought it was going to be about the freeway system. Water, oil, freeways.

Bryan

I just love when you guys just riff….👏🏻👏🏻

PETER GREER

Personal Best is a really good movie. Underseen and underrated

Richard Raymond

I know that some people feel differently, but I like the Q & A episodes. I could listen to Bret talk about anything. Sometimes it’s preferable when the guest isn’t exactly Susanna Hoffs or Tarantino tier.

N.M. Janice.

Love the listener question episodes.

Adam Long

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Can you make a new tier that only includes guest interview episodes? I’m sick of paying for this shit, idc about these peoples questions.

Dal Rhoads

Whoops! I commented too soon while listening live. Sorry, of course Adam couldn’t let it go and is 💯 correct.

Patrick

Bret’s take on Taylor Swift, then Adam, “Sure. Yeah. Yeah.” 😂 (Right there with ya. My ten year old girl loves it so much. And I just, “Sure. Yeah. Yeah.” her too.)

Patrick

I get a kick out of hearing how Bret strangely mispronounces certain words. Today it's "behemoth."

Steve

Andrew SCOTT, Bret.. Andrew SCOTT.. he was incredible in "Ripley."
