Great Episode! Crazy how The Bangles were never nominated for a Grammy, but Anora wins Best Picture. Times are a Changin!

The Lake Show

I found Anna Karenina a real slog. The most enjoyable "classic" novel I believe is Pride and Prejudice.

Gnome

Wow she has great taste in books, film, and tv.

Alexander Quattlander

when i was reading it i was thinking bowie but after listening to this that clicked

Shaianne

Bret did a little review of his work maybe six months ago i think. But he doesnt mention much.

Alexander Quattlander

Haime is opener on Taylor Swift tour and yes i think Bret is right if lead was hotter prob be bigger but the music isnt quite there either. And Bret still referencing Todd as his boyfriend...

Alexander Quattlander

Mailer is a fascinating figure, he was influenced a great deal by the psychologist Wilhelm Reich in his writings- https://projectmailer.net/pm/The_Mailer_Review/Volume_10,_2016/Mailer’s_Use_of_Wilhelm_Reich

Tom

I might try it

If you're a transit commuter, Kindle is a must

E

There’s a debate among my fellow readers about switching to kindle, the convenience of it, how it saves space and prolongs the reading experience as you age and your sight withers. I just can’t do it. Nothing about it excites me as much as paper, the feeling of a book, its thickness and its richness in my hands.

Samer Akl

Hey Bret... forgive me if you already have, but have you ever talked about Norman Mailer? I just saw the most recent documentary about him which, all too predictably, focused on his exhibitionism more than his writing. He's a difficult, paradoxical writer to enjoy exactly, but passages of his work have stuck with me. Love to hear your thoughts.

There is a prince version, a demo of this song on Spotify and it is also incredible like the Martika song

Nikki Ferrari

omg I didn’t know he was a guest, I have to listen!

Tom

And directed by a former guest Ti West.

Billy Schafer

Love that Bret only reads physical books. Same and I can’t do audio.

Sodaheiress

She’s great. Belinda Carlisle next please.

Phoenix

Definitely two canon episodes.

Grant

She's a great guest...should be a regular!

Brian Aldrich

Exactly! It was a much needed mood shift for the pod

Ashley

She def did. Like old friends even tho they didn’t know each other. Golden.

Patrick

just found out about this on Twitter. had to join and listen. I'm so glad

oficinismo

Among those that have read Hoffs’ novel, anyone else think that the Jonesy character was based on Prince?

Dave

Always wondered whether Bret read in e-book form.

Dave

Run like an Egyptian

Gatsby

Bret will you watching MaXXXine when it hits theatres next week? Seems to be right up your alley- 1980s neo-noir horror about dark Hollywood and the serial killer phenomena. Bares a number of resemblances to the The Shards.

Tom

Nice energy to this episode. I think Susanna helped lift Bret’s spirits. Spinal Tap is so funny 🎶 gimme some moneyyyy 🎶

Ashley

I am born in 1974 and my cultural experience growing up in LA was mixed due to the rapid technological change that occurred every few years in a constantly changing time. Bret and Susanna's conversation who is slightly older made me appreciate their cultural knowledge and personal inspiration in a slower time before the internet. And they have a lot in common. Plus, sharing the experience of living in LA during an era slightly before mine made me appreciate an era of Los Angeles that I only got to experience at the end when it was in decline. Great podcast

MisterBlasty

Love how Susanna is assigning Bret homework.

Dave

Great part 2 and overall conversation on all our favorite topics. It was wonderful to hear Susanna talk about my hometown, Oxford, and how it inspired her novel. I will definitely re-listen to both episodes again soon!

Darren

He died. A truck got him.

Lionel

Are you back yet?

Knokkel knokkel

Definitely the episodes that dive into literature are my favorites. I think since books are mostly out of the current conversations, these episodes are like fresh air. Thank you, more of this please.

I’m going to make a demand: that every podcast is accompanied by a special playlist selected by Brett and the guest. Another great song written by prince and sung by a female is Love, Thy Will be Done by Martika. Unbelievable song, which gets hardly any play—I had not heard it until recently! I got it off Lorde’s at home playlist on Apple Music—altogether a work of art in itself. I infer she and martika have something in common—“we crave a different kind of buzz.”

Stephen Curry

Thank fuck, finally a good episode

Richie Laufman (Dixie who went Yank)

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

My crush on Susanna Hoffs rekindled! … In all seriousness, this was such a great set of episodes. It was just fun. A great conversation between two friends. Your chemistry was palpable. I laughed out loud when she enthusiastically went: “We should go to the New Bev!” And Bret was like: “Nah… I don’t do people…” I also watched her Criterion Closet thing. I agree that Bret should do one of those. She’s just adorable. Love her taste in movies, music and literature.

Erix Antoine

she just got tired

Oleg

The Pet Shop Boys call it the imperial phase. Whatever you do its successful. After that its downhill. The bands that survive this. Keep there fan base, while surviving the backlash.

Stevan Popovic

I was wrong. After the first part I complained about her interrupting and talking over Bret too much. This episode was much better. The problem was probably me.

Steve

She’s gorgeous & very talented… great episode.

PETER GREER

Also I listened back to "Manic Monday" after the first episode of this podcast dropped. Even if I didn't already know Prince wrote it, you could easily guess it. The opening verse, vocal pattern and lyrical content is fairly similar to "1999." Go listen to them back to back and you'll hear it. It's probably why he didn't keep the track for himself, he likely felt that he already wrote it once before and it was too similar to "1999."

John Q. Thompson

I've never cared about or enjoyed any Patti Smith or Barbra Streisand and I'm a fan or moderately enjoy just about any other band or artist mentioned here. Maybe ya gotta be a woman or a certain type of male to appreciate that stuff? And I like plenty of gay artists, but somehow I just don't connect with the female artists that gay men really tend to like, but I do enjoy some Donna Summer. I don't care about the poetry stuff of artists that I do enjoy like Jim Morrison or Henry Rollins. I think there's a time and place for that stuff and for me it ain't on a record.

John Q. Thompson

Lots of Todd references in this one. But, I’m glad BEE sounds in good spirits. Also, I like like Hoffs now. Also, “Someone To Lay Down Beside Me” is a cool song, and it sounds like something Hoffs would sing. Great choice.
