S8E17: Mechanical Alien with Chandler Morrison
Added 2024-05-14 07:54:34 +0000 UTC
Author Chandler Morrison and Bret discuss publishing fiction outside the corporate sphere, the fallout from a bizarre trip to Portland and finding a girl with the moon in her eye at a Cleveland tanning salon.
It sucks that Morrison wants to run away so hard from his crowning achievement Dead Inside. He wears his disdain for that book like a badge of honor. Saying he “out Oppenheimer’s Oppenheimer,” by trying to distance himself from it…
I still plan on dedicating my necrophile book to him once I finish it. I’m grinning already knowing how bad he will loathe that lol.

I love it when Bret interviews, or talks about, a writer I never heard of, and I am compelled to read them after.
Great interview, Bret.

Managed to read 80 pages of American Narcissususus. Reads like a reworking of the Informers for a Mills and Boon publication. Might appeal more to my mother or wife.

See, I just love Bret but it always intrigues me when he decides to pick comfort over real experiences (going to a bookstore, a movie..). Doesn't it contradict the nostalgia of the "true experience" he so fondly talks about in these episodes?
Great episode!

This guy was a little too hung up on ex girlfriends. He was pining over a chick he dated only seven months?! As Don Corleone said, “you can act like a man!” Interesting guy though. I wish him well.

Something tells me BEE will watch Megalopolis, but not on an IMAX screen, and not til it's $4.99 on rental services

Started reading Chandler’s book with no expectations - laughed very hard within the first few pages. Fans of BEE will definitely like it. Almost done and it’s terrific. Very dark and funny.

I hope Bret talks MEGALOPOLIS this week: Is he excited? Will he see it in theaters? IMAX? (IMAX has made a global commitment to show the film) Does he think the studios are really salty, jealous, and trying to sabotage the release because Coppola self-funded and they wont be seeing any of the $$$ if it's successful?
LONGLEGS also looks potentially good. The trailer is really good. Maika Monroe is a solid actress. She was great recently in GOD IS A BULLET. I wonder if it has dawned on Bret with all this talk about how ancient he is now (Cryptkeeper cackle) that 60 qualifies for the senior discount at some theaters.

Good chat with an interesting guy. Won't be reading the books, not my thing, and it would have been interesting to hear more about how he fits having a day job around writing and what sober life is like. Oh, and Bret will *hate* Constellations - hate it!

Hi fellow BEE listeners. Since this episode is about indie publishing, I’m going to take the plunge and promote my new novel STONE RIBS, now available on Amazon.
There is a murderer loose in the suburbs of Kernsville, Maryland, but he isn’t targeting humans. He’s taking their pets, testing the limits of his cruelty, a pre-serial killer. When the authorities do nothing, a group of adolescents conspire to hunt him down.
STONE RIBS by Thomas Zimmerman is a tightly crafted thriller, a boy and his dog story set in a modern America that has lost all innocence.

It’s truly shocking to me when I hear so many of Bret’s guests (of a certain age) talk about all the prescription drugs they’ve been on since they were kids. The shit doesn’t work! If you don’t have any consistency as a child and your parents are going through a messy divorce: that’s an external problem and not fixed by anti-anxiety meds!

Great guest, great conversation. I enjoyed what he had to say and I’m definitely going to check out his writing.
Bret, you do you, but I am noticing this fixation that you’re “old” is bordering on obsessive. It’s getting repetitive and distracting.
It’s the opposite end of the cringe spectrum from people that constantly downplay that they’re not old. I get it, you’re going through it right now and leaning into It is better than being in denial but I think there’s a balance to be struck which I am sure you will find. Aging with grace doesn’t get enough credit these days.
It’s safe to say none of us are thinking of your age until you bring it up, and then even when you bring it up, it’s overly dramatic. You’re not 80 and on Geritol for fucks sake. Did you trade your iphone in for a Jitterbug yet? Where is the AARP coupon code for this pod?
Chandler dodged a bullet with Katie, but is clearly still under her spell. You can’t be an artist and have a partner that’s censoring/editing your art. Find someone that respects your autonomy as an artist.
As always, appreciate you, Adam, and the pod!

I liked this guy. Even though I have no interest in the sort of stuff I am assuming he writes based on the description I'll check it out. I got over the shock lit stuff when I published that sort of thing way back and now just cringe at my own work. But every once in a while someone comes around that puts a new spin on it that can be compelling.

I read the Frog King, fresh out of grad school. A little over ten years later—i worked for a prestigious publishing company (ND, I only landed the job because I was dating the grand daughter of the founder)
I was so disappointed. The book ruined it for me.
