Mic drop: "And David Byrne was on the cover of Time Magazine, when that meant something." Ha ha ha... Bret quips so well.

Ben

I was dependent on Benzos for many years along with an anti anxiety med. I had to wean myself off over a long course of six months because my doc would insist I keep using them and I’m now off them for 5 years.

Samer Akl

I went that year too in Pittsburgh. Am I correct in remembering that nirvana was supposed to headline and SP took over adding a level of disappointment?

K.D.F.

Beefeater martini is my drink too

Sodaheiress

I have no fucking idea what you’re on about. U high? If so, do a line for me as well. Yeah, and listen to Paul Westerberg.. then maybe you’ll get my JOKE. Jeez.

Marius Rustad

I'm a GenX'er so inherently not sensitive, but this is dead wrong. BEE is incredibly fascinating and intellectual. In general I also don't understand why people who don't like him continue to pay to listen, or to insult him. Isn't there better things you can do with your time and money?

Sodaheiress

Hell, yes.

Alec K. Redfearn

As was Dave Navarro. Don’t recall flea in Jane’s though

David Schur

Have you tried cocaine?

Jack

Those gummies leave me “high and groggy hungover” at least 16 hours…

Mara Capozzi

the quintessential Los Angeles film is REPO MAN.

Edi Panta

Didn’t he also offhandedly mention he’d had dinner with Kim Gordon on a recent episode? Would that be the Sonic Youth Kim Gordon or is there another one?

Jack Wheatley

Can't believe he just glossed over have dinner with Mark Mothersbaug to talk about his pee.

Edi Panta

Please get Mark Mothersbaug of DEVO on the podcast!!

Edi Panta

I watched Christine, liked it. Fantastic show by you guys, as always. Speaking of John carpenter, my favorite movie of his is They Live. Though I’m only a lowly silver member, lowest of the low, I challenge you guys to do a little riff on They Live. Most to point who are “They?”

Stephen Curry

Never stop doing gummies this episode is so funny

jooj

For Bret: Do you ever wonder what you should put on your tombstone? I mean.. «Here lies BEE etc» kinda boring. Here’s a suggestion.. which, if I may be so bold, would be very fitting and check several boxes: « Don’t be sad, you’re a world class fag.» I’m probably gonna get burned for that by all the over sensitive millennials who don’t get it. Oh well.

Marius Rustad

Underdog musical tip for everyone seeking that feeling of longing.. nostalgia.. and what the Portugese call saudade: Turnover - «Peripheral Vision»

Marius Rustad

I gave this some thought.. and, if you do too.. you’ll end up as me.. concluding with the fact that.. the quintessential LA band is.. Van Halen. *mic drop*

Marius Rustad

shogun is really good and gets even better at the end. shame they decided to make season two tho.

Oleg

there is another separate post for platinum members in the timeline for submitting your questions.

Oleg

You guys I’m old and stupid and a few months ago became a member of platinum posse but i don’t know how to submit a question, halp

Sherlock

Iced gin with no vermouth ain’t no martini.

Jack Wheatley

The movie Christine pretty much reimagined King's novel. They left out the ghost of Roland D. LeBay running things, and Darnell has a much more impactful death scene in the book (Christine rams through his house and runs him over.) I prefer the movie versions of both The Shining and Christine over the books they're based on. Christine has the unfortunate distinction of being the first film to use Bad to the Bone as a needle drop, but I don't hold that against it. Keith Gordon would probably be a fine guest as he acted in some great movies and is a very accomplished director. Have John Stockwell on at some point, too. He's also a director. Also, Christine is not from 1957, she's a '58.

I saw them at Lolapalooza '94 in RI. It was a brutally hot summer day, the show was on a Air Force base, everyone had been in the direct sunlight all day waiting to see them, they were the headliner. The line up that year was amazing: Pumpkins, Beastie Boys; The Verve and Flaming Lips on the 2nd stage. They come out and start having technical issue to the point where Corgan is smashing stuff and they walked off stage. Then they come back out continue playing and have more issues, smash more gear and then walk off again. People were so tired, sun blistered, and not in the mood for the rock star bullshit that we just started leaving. People didn't even wait to see if they were going to come back out. I definitely felt let down by them as a fan that night. I did see them in my hometown the previous winter on the Siamese Dream tour and they were pretty good.

R. M.

I’ve been here since day 1 and maybe you have been here a bit too? Not everybody else has been. So, Adam and Bret are always respectful to the Platinum Posse (new or OG) who pay the most $ for the podcast and thus they ask and answer every question even if it has been asked before. Bret usually does a good job of reshaping an answer to an old question that bears repeating now. As does Adam with the order of asking. He knows what works and asks them in the order that best matches the vibe of the day. It’s not so random but it’s not overly planned out either. I think it works every time and the Q&As are my fav eps. That’s my take anyway.

Patrick

Anyone else think Relapse sounds ridiculous? And i specifically remember BEE commenting how boring the theme of addiction can be ? Say wha..?

David Hardin

Lol

Justin Grams

'They Live' wasn't really a horror movie, more like a sci-fi comedy and Bret meant 'Christine' was Carpenter's last good horror film. 'They Live' is great though. I think the last great Carpenter film, horror or otherwise, is 'In The Mouth of Madness'

Thomas Matich

Bret might be right about 'The Bends' being the superior Radiohead album, at least to 'OK Computer.' I've always loved 'In Rainbows' the most and 'Kid A' in second, but remember being very impressed by 'The Bends' and didn't find 'OK Computer' to be accessible. It was innovative and experimental and I think led to them expanding their sound and making more superior albums better.

Thomas Matich

Good episode. I still don't get how Adam picks the questions though, it seems random and he loses track, asks stuff that has been asked on the pod numerous times, etc. Adam is great but I think this part could be better organized.

Thomas Matich

Correct! Adam, always with the hyperbole.

N.M. Janice.

Bret, you are wrong! The Swimmer is great! Give it another shot.

N.M. Janice.

They are a total joke. Can't take them seriously for five minutes. Some of their songs and lyrics are so corny and unintentionally hilarious they could be Spinal Tap hits.

N.M. Janice.

Fabulous

PETER GREER

Blame it on the gummies

GC

If you’re younger than 40 RHCP is the quintessential LA band not even a discussion

Jack

Bon Jovi aren’t a serious band. They lack substance. I watched the doc and they seemed deluded, I think they consider themselves to stand shoulder to shoulder with the great rock bands… Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Guns and roses, Eagles… but they are nowhere near.

Lionel

Brian Redban on Joe Rogan was a notoriously awful sidekick. Eventually got kicked off… but I do think he did get massive pay off.

Lionel

I rember smoking weed and I thought a SWAT team was raiding my house. I was lying in bed and I could clearly hear them communicating on their radio….. weeds not for me.

Lionel

Shogun was good, but it was utterly conventional in ways even the original 1980s adaptation was not. The outsized critical and audience reaction to the new adaptation is a testament to how bad most modern television has become.

Louis

True Stories is awful?! It's wonderful!

Louis

I hear you. Always a bad trip.

Sértő-Radics Sarolta

What are you, Amish?

Jack

KEITH GORDON would be THE perfect BEE guest… An 80s teen actor. He’s acted for DePalma, Carpenter and Fosse. He’s co-starred with AND directed Downey Jr. Most of the movies he’s helmed are adapted from novels. He now makes a wage directing episodic TV. If only he was gay for pay.

Dan Palmer

The video for 1979 gets me every time I see it though. The pov car ride through the American suburbs. Makes me emotional in a comforting way.

Constantine

Flea was in both those bands at one point. Just saying bc it’s good for this conversation

Constantine

Also side topic but the Pumpkins were a down right terrible live band in the 90’s. They were god awful The studio albums are like soundtracks of my youth but they ruined live shows. I’m not sure if Billy Corgan has ever talked about that in the press.

Constantine

Am I really the first person here to correct Brett on the closing Radiohead song on the Bear is “Let Down” not “No surprises”. I know there are plenty of RH fans here. And there’s no part of OK Computer that’s silly. Get back to the K-pop Brettski

Constantine

I can’t agree more with The Heart of the Matter being Don Henley’s best solo work.

Nick

It’s “Let Down” not “No Surprises” at the end of The Bear season one. #TheMoreYouKnow

Justin Gerber

Does anyone have more information about the French/European TV show Bret mentioned in the beginning that he said he’s half created and is now taking meetings for? Sounds interesting. We need more new project news!

Darren

Isn't taking benzos with alcohol a potentially life ending mix?

Richard Raymond

You might just be getting a strain that doesn't suit you well. If you didn't already know "sativa" is more like an upper, if you need to work and get something done it could be good for that, sativa could be the source of paranoia as I believe it does work on your mind a bit more than "indica", but depending on who you ask you could get a different answer everytime. I'm an "indica" guy (on the rare occasions when I do indulge), that's the mellow you out strain, body buzz strain. You'll get calmer effects from an "indica." Now if you're getting leaf or bud from from the street who knows what you're getting, going to a "legit/professional" shop everything will be labeled as "sativa", "indica" or "hybrid" which is somewhere in the middle of "sativa" and "indica." While I don't indulge in THC much because I'm watching my weight and obviously a side effect of THC is the munchies, I would definitely recommend it over alcohol, but hey different strokes for different folks. It's a much safer option than booze but I'm sure you already knew that.

John Q. Thompson

He's a good co-host/sidekick or what have you. Just the right amount of interaction and insight and he can be funny and wickedly sarcastic at times which helps. There's other podcasts out there where the sidekick is overbearing and almost takes over the show from the person whose name is on the marquee.

John Q. Thompson

If his drug history is as lengthy and deep as mine was, which I assume it is, cocaine was as readily available to me as it was for him, but I dabbled in heroin. My point is all of those things ingested together isn't a very tall order.

John Q. Thompson

He's a guy who at the time, critics and audiences were hit or miss on. These days almost all his films are reappraised as masterworks. I wish he get could inspired and get his heart back in it for one more film, preferably with Kurt Russell. Hell even if it's a 3rd "Escape From..." movie. But these days when he's not wrapped up in video games he's doing music with his son. I'm just glad he's keeping busy and keeping his name out there. His films (most of them) have and will stand the test of time for many decades to come.

John Q. Thompson

The BEE weed episode! Right in my wheel house. Might I offer a bit of information and some suggestions Bret. I have worked in both the medical and cannabis industries for the last half decade. First, like traditional medicine, sometimes a bit of experimentation is involved to find what works for you, it's no different with cannabis. From what Bret has described it sounds like THC potentially doesn't agree with him, which is OK because there are other cannabinoid based options besides THC that can potentially bring him relief (CBD, CBG, CBDA) and they are non-intoxicating. Edibles affect us different than smoking because the THC is processed through our liver and converted into hydroxy-11, which is a more powerful and psychoactive substance than THC, this is why edible highs tend to be powerful, long lasting, and can cause a edible hangover the following day. For this reason, many people use cannabis tinctures sublingually (under the tongue) instead of edibles. With this delivery method most of the cannabinoids are absorbed directly into the blood stream. This will largely bypass the liver (other than the trace amounts you swallow after holding the tincture under your tongue for 30-60 seconds) and therefore the majority of the THC will not be converted to hydroxy-11. Another benefit of tinctures is you can really titrate (dial in) the dose that works best for you personally. Cannabis affects everyone differently, so trying different things in order to zero in what works for you is almost always essential. Consider trying a half a gummy with no melatonin and no wine, so you can get a true read on how the gummy is affecting you on it's own. Also if you feel that THC rubs you the wrong way, consider trying a CBD or CBG tincture. You might not even need the THC as many people use CBD and CBG tincture to help with sleep successfully and they are both non-intoxicating. CBD and CBG tinctures will have trace amounts of THC (typically up to 0.3%) but not enough to be intoxicating and they can be a good alternative for some people to THC for anxiety, inflammation, and sleep. Make sure any THC/CBD/CBG/CBDA tincture you buy is full spectrum (contains all the cannabinoids and terpenes from the source cannabis/hemp), is made from organically cultivated hemp or cannabis , and is 3rd party lab tested. Take it sublingually not orally. Start with a standard 5-7mg dose and work your way up to when you start to see results. Feel to reach out if you ever have any questions. I can't wait to watch the Bon Jovi doc, I suspect Sambora got screwed. Would you consider having Desmond Child on the pod? He's recently written a book, is a very interesting person, and has written some of the most famous/most successful songs of the last 50 years. As always, thanks to you and Adam for the podcast.

R. M.

Every time I've tried weed in any form I've always become paranoid and have phantom pains. Can't do it. I wish I could just enjoy the mellow high but it's never happened. I'll stick with alcohol.

D Michael Hardy

Taking magnesium right before bed can help you stay asleep, I use "Magnesium Glycinate" from Costco. Also, try the mouth tape. I use the "Nexcare Gentle Paper Tape ". You might have sleep apnea?

A

Have Honor Levy on to promote her book, Bret!

M. Nero Nava

A Facebook friend once complained about how awful the opening bands were as she waited to see RHCP. I wanted to comment, "If you think they're bad, wait till you see the headliner." I was nice, though and didn't.

R

My biggest take away was that Jon really really loves Jon! 😂

Dave Mason

Happened gradually, but I now look forward to Adam as much as Bret. I wonder if I'm just slow to appreciate their dynamic, and it was there the whole time, or if it's evolved over the past couple years...

Alexander Sorondo

Listening to the soothing sounds of Bret describing not being able to pee is all the drugs I need to get to a lovely, deep sleep. Thank you Bret. You dear sir, are the good shit.

David Willis

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Bret took Melatonin, a weed gummy, wine, and Xanax in one night? 😂

Dave Mason

Bret's trainer is giving him weed cookies and criticizing his gym shoes? Where did he find this guy? 😂

Dave Mason

I wish u would try the thc seltzers! You can drink them slowly and they are very different from the gummies. You need to get the benzos out of your life! They are so bad for your cognition, trust me I have a parent that is doing terribly and I blame the benzos!

Tara Jean Sulljvan

Agree

Justin Grams

They Live in 1988 was a huge return to form for John Carpenter!

Justin Grams

Didn’t think Jane’s would be a band Brett would go for and normally love Adam’s take on things but those first two Jane’s Addiction albums are way above anything the RHCP have ever done. The two bands are often compared but are miles apart to me. RHCP I’ve never rated but those first two Jane’s records are right up there with the best of the 80s and 90s. Want to shout out Concrete Blonde as an underrated LA band too. They never seem to get a mention when LA bands are discussed

Dan

Right! Back when music videos were different and memorable.

John Q. Thompson

My biggest take away from the Bon Jovi doc is Doc McGhee's (also manager to KISS and Motley Crue) new head of hair. Jeremy Piven must've turned him onto his hair guy. Why do this? Especially if you're not an actor or model. I will never understand it, but then again I'm blessed with a great head of hair. Do these balding guys think hair gives them "power" or will make up for a lackluster personality and attract more women? People who do this must have no shame, because it's not like anyone ISN'T going to notice when one day you've got a relatively bald dome and then you've suddenly got some grass on the field up there. Obviously when you're bald, the docs who do plugs or whatever it is these days can't work miracles but they can get a little something to happen. Is it really worth it though? And has society changed so much now that people will now compliment such a thing rather than laugh or ridicule? Why's it so hard to just embrace nature taking it course? But would much rather see a band like Guns N' Roses this kind of long form doc treatment.

John Q. Thompson

Adam referring to the “Tonight, Tonight” video as “that papier maché video” made me laugh out loud.

M. Nero Nava

Billy Corgan would be a great guest, they used to be one of my one of my least favorite of the big 6 grunge/alt. rock bands (Smashing Pumps, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden). Pearl Jam is by far the worst to me after 2 maybe 3 good records, to me they haven't made a good one front to back since. But after spinning "Mellon Collie" every time I got into my car last summer I've come to realize it's possibly my favorite album from all of the bands mentioned above. STP's "Purple", Soundgarden's "Badmotorfinger"/"Superunknown" and Alice In Chains' "Dirt" are close seconds. By the way I don't include The Melvins and Faith No More with those bands, they defy genre more than them and also pre-date some of them a bit. But of all the bands mentioned here who released albums in the 90's Faith No More's "Angel Dust" is king to me.

John Q. Thompson

For a virgin with no drug history this might work like a charm. But something as innocuous as this or melatonin doesn't work on someone with a strong drug abuse history, as I've tried these more "down home remedies" and they do nothing for me. It takes a a fairly strong sedative (Trazodone then I got a tolerance to that, so now I'm on Quetiapine) to put me down. Then again I've got a fairly long past with drugs and it's difficult to turn my mind off at night, I'm very much a night owl.

John Q. Thompson

By the way Bret, you're being overcharged on those Wyld gummies, can get there here in MI for $20 before the tax and they're considered to be on the higher end, a more expensive brand. Can get something comparable for as low as $8. But Adam is right about "budtenders", no matter what you choose there's never a bad choice no matter what you pick out.

John Q. Thompson

True. I occasionally enjoy RHCP (even the later albums without Frusciante), but I've never liked Jane's or Porno for Pyros so I never gave the RHCP album with Navarro a chance.

John Q. Thompson

Bret wants off benzos? That's admirable, but I'd gladly trade THC edibles for benzos, but I'm an addict, in slight recovery. THC/weed is readily available here in Michigan, so many shops in my small town I can get to one in less than 60 sec from leaving my house. No prescription needed, just gotta be of legal age. My issue with them is that I'm too concerned with putting on weight as I've just lost nearly 50lbs, I'm 6 foot 1 and right at 200lb occasionally dipping under 200. I don't smoke, never have, not even cigs. A side effect of the edibles is the "munchies" obviously, so they're a no-go for me. Benzos were always my favorite though.

John Q. Thompson

Well RHCP even had a Jane’s Addiction guitarist for like 2 years when Frusciante first left in the mid-90s. So Dave Navaro plays on One Hot Minute and John is back for Californication

Kevin

Try valerian 30mins pre sleep. Then if wake up pre 3am take another. If wake up after 3am take a Kava. Alcohol and sedatives can be a dangerous mix.

Thomas Edwards

Your memory does indeed serve you correct about Perry being fired. Cheers for getting back to me, legends. Glad, you two could steer me to my Burt lancaster Sexual Awakening and appreciate the insight and answers as always. The Mattster
