S8E13: Decent Poppins with Shane Cashman

Writer/Journalist Shane Cashman returns to the show and talks with Bret about hoarding skepticism when truth is scarce, finding joy in a fresh grave and the end of an era for the modern-day Emily Post.

Listen to both parts of Shane's first appearance from 2023: S6E34 Shane Part 1 and S6E35 Shane Part 2

S8E13: Decent Poppins with Shane Cashman

Comments

Oh god more fencing sitting nonsense. There is no left and right. There are a bunch of people who want to be left the fvk alone and there are people attacking those same people. It's really that fvkn simple. Wake up stop playing to the gallery

Ray Bowers

Definitely enjoyed it more than part 1.

Alec K. Redfearn

I liked this guest. He can think critically

Sodaheiress

I prefer him as he is, his intelligence and critical thinking skills shine, and I think he's still very handsome

Sodaheiress

You are not missing much by skipping Dune.

Sodaheiress

He's big in small places.

Ryan Mcnabb

Correct. The only place I’ve been to in Florida was Pensacola, in winter. I assume the humidity in W. Palm Beach and Miami is awful.

J Hay

Also worth noting he was an adjunct professor — not a full professor

Marcelo

We need better guests…

Marcelo

All in the name of personal liberties!

Happyhead

Damn what a tool

Stephen

I heard Shane Cashman contacted Nero’s employer

Happyhead

Shane Assman

Happyhead

Masterpiece. "How 'bout those Bears??"

Ryan Mcnabb

I've already had enough Adam for 2024.

Ryan Mcnabb

Javier Bardem saves it.

Ryan Mcnabb

I hope he continues to shock and disappoint - those are by far the best episodes.

Ryan Mcnabb

It's so studiously non-sided that it's disorienting.

Ryan Mcnabb

Both great places !

Knokkel knokkel

This is at least the third guest to say something along the lines of "What I'm experiencing on my Twitter feed is ruining my life". How about delete your account then dude? Problem solved

Happyhead

So I take it Nero deleted his whiney comment?

Stephen

Is civil war for liberals only? Serious question.

Travis Films

Then you have not been to West Palm Beach or Miami.

Travis Films

Ripley casting (the Ripley casting aside) was fantastic. The way it was shot was beautiful. I hardly cared about the story - just watching those interesting faces and cinematography was enough for me and I usually do not condone black and white format.

Travis Films

What is great about Dune 2? If it's like the preceding Dune, I think I'm done with it.

Travis Films

The author was on The Dana Gould Hour, recently. It was a fascinating chat.

Dan Palmer

Awesome show! I hope Bret experiences Civil War in theaters and talks about it.

Christian Leon

Regarding Steve Martin, I really enjoy John Hughes' classic "PLANES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES"

FlyingWaffle

Value add J, thanks

Knokkel knokkel

Flannery O’Connor forever. Hands down the best American short story writer. Shane’s classes sound excellent.

Normaling

Everyone knows you gotta go a shade lighter than what it says in the box. If your hair was light brown, do sandy blond. If your hair was black, go dark brown. Someone needs to let Jay know this

Happyhead

“Everyone knows”? No. People with various opinions seem to think everybody who disagrees with them are wrong/dumb/insane/dangerous.

J Hay

As a native of LA County who now lives in BEE’s general area (based on his references to Doheny & the Sunset Strip), my experience is that it is very expensive to live here, with horrific traffic, often annoyingly sun-blazed weather, and too many “wannabe’s” who make mediocre wages as gig economy service staff. Lots of homeless people, too. It wasn’t like this a few decades ago.

J Hay

I mentioned this before, but I saw Steve Martin at a big amphitheater in LA, during his stand-up era. The Blues Brothers opened for him. It was somewhat silly, but well done.

J Hay

Are people really struggling financially in Los Angeles? The wealth here is unparalleled.

Knokkel knokkel

Ripley looks amazing. The actors are an easy twenty years too old. Makes zero sense.

Matt

Ya think? : )

Jim Weaver

He really doesn’t like The Jerk.

N.M. Janice.

Good podcast, Shane is an interesting guy. Wish we could’ve escaped Adam‘s “piece of shit” comments, they’ve become so redundant when he doesn’t like something. Given his age, he really needs to work on his way with words.

Jim Weaver

The internet might be an instant karma machine…I don’t think anyone can expect Bret to parse out the online squabbles of two grown men, regardless of one being an invited guest. I’m sure some of us wish Bret was our daddy, but c’mon lol

Ashley

I know Bret doesn’t read the comments but perhaps Adam or someone close to him does. In the podcast Bret said he would wanted a book about Lynch’s Dune. This title launched Sept 23 https://www.amazon.com/Masterpiece-Disarray-David-Lynchs-History/dp/1948221292/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2FHHCTTSPSHLX&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.FYwhodvrsLMkduzFkOnU4xSt_KA1jrWyS3VzJS-ipnHxG3Ce3QZ8jWdv_K89ozc5njtR6DJxoQi4OvbCj9ZOfZTLgYnQPv_za-avnterkQI1By6FdocDtqLLBkhNd6gzfYILVWBhWDPuGSBkhT--O5AiKzoy2imHGbj615JeM3Tn4R23K-Mm6yCwXQismzFundar9YflPo80c_lfcTIcemunj_ySYgOUc71oeetwwRo.1twHy-_UdvEUev2YzOBN-M3DW_-mJ_GOO0c5JrkTH6M&dib_tag=se&keywords=a+masterpiece+in+disarray+david+lynch%27s+dune&qid=1713622503&sprefix=Dune+a+master%2Caps%2C243&sr=8-1 Dune a masterpiece in disarray. A deep dive by the writer Max Evry into the making of the movie, and an oral history by everyone he could track down that was involved. Lynch won’t comment on the movie, but this book is the closest to its making. The first edition is also a really nice object in and of itself.

Chris Mall

Traditionally, people who follow arts, culture, and media tend to have a more liberal sensibility. It was cool for us to goof on conservatives in the past because they were considered jacket-and-tie squares who, like, just couldn’t get with the times, man. I suspect this is the attitude a lot of Bret’s readers and listeners have. Whenever Bret’s guests express a conservative or libertarian view the comments are flooded with people saying, “Bret’s going all Fox News again!” Personally, I believe Fox News is just controlled opposition. Nonetheless, conservatives are the dissenting voices today, and I think people who used to mock conservatives, whether liberal or apolitical, are finding themselves drifting closer to their orbit as the progressive movement keeps shifting the goal post whenever it suits their cause. Liberals taught us you can’t have a free society without flexibility, but conservatives remind us you can’t have flexibility without restraint. Bret’s conversations with Shane Cashman transcend party politics, and for some reason Bret’s fans don’t recognize that. You don’t have to agree with Bret or his guests, but dismissing their dialogue as kookish, right-wing nonsense is glib and unwise. Also, I agree that Bret has no obligation to please anyone with guests that they like, but, supposedly, Shane Cashman doxed one Bret’s Patreon subscribers. I vaguely remember this being brought up in a Q&A. I don’t know the circumstances around the allegation, but if it’s true, then I think it’s in poor taste for Bret to invite him back on. Regardless, I enjoyed Bret’s episodes with Cashman.

Billy Schafer

I'm in love with Andrew Scott. I'll watch him in anything. And if Scoot McNairy is his daddy, he'll yeah... even more hot! But yes, this show is really a great escape and I love how it moves like molasses at points. A few years ago I spent over a month with my husband driving around Sicily & Italy and had lots of down time doing non-tourist roaming. The cinematography does an excellent job capturing the laziness of it all.

Timo

Pro Platinum Posse tip: Always agree with Ashley and 🐝 real. ;)

Patrick

I am not tired of "right-wing edge lords" because I don't consume their content, nor do I over exaggerate and catastrophize them as some huge evil nefarious force. Nothing Cashman said came off as remotely "edgelord" to me, so it just feels like your using one of those tacky nebulous lefty terms to over exaggerate and justify your anger for people who have different opinions or ideas then you. People like yourself seem to have to build people you don't like into some huge evil to justify your irrational reaction to them. At the end of the day your just having an intolerant, immature reaction to things you don't like as an adult. Not a sign of strength, stability, or maturity that's for sure. It's a free country. There's always going to be all sort of people with different ideas, I suggest getting used to it. It's called diversity. American's are always going to hold different ideas, and the ones that can't handle that and be civil and respectful are the problem, not the other way around.

R. M.

This guy calls Covid a government created “genocide”. I’d say that’s irritatingly right wing edge lord. It’s funny these people complain about liberals and people being offended nowadays yet they can’t get over having to wear a mask for three months

OSOS

How are you not tired of these money-chasing right-wing edge lords? It’s 2024, I’d assume we moved on from these types of personalities but apparently we haven’t.

OSOS

I think you may be the one in need of help. “Melting down?” That’s just you projecting. If you listened to the interview, Cashman did not call Musk a genius and had a pretty balanced take on him. You are the exact type of brainwashed polarized reactionary individual I described in my comment and are not in any position to be making mental health diagnosis.

R. M.

dude you need serious professional help. you are melting down in the comments because i don’t like this tim pool’s cashman who thinks elon is a genius lol.

Oleg

"media-mindcontrolled" you sound like a psych ward patient

slimshadyfan666

👏 👏 👏

Ashley

Enjoyed this one, especially the literature talk and Bret’s opening monologue. Do go see Dune 2 Bret, it’s fucking great.

David Willis

Planes is a dope film. So hilarious.

David Willis

"Everyone I don't like is 'inarticulate' or a 'bootlicker." Why do these people listen if they know they don't like the guest? So they can come on here, whine, and virtue signal/announce that they "stepped away" from the patreon? Let me let you in on a secret: No one cares. No one. Not Bret, and not any of the other mature adult patrons. All of you reactionary virtue signaling tribal pearl clutchers are the very people Bret has been talking about for the last half decade, yet you don't seem to realize it. You don't like this guy but couldn't find anything to critique in what he said so you have to attack his delivery, and find an angle to attack and virtue signal about him. Get a life. Calling someone a "bootlicker" is what lazy media-mindcontrolled proxy-slave wackadoos do when they can't form an intelligent argument against someone they don't like or that has different views, so they use a nebulous term like "bootlicker." I hope Bret has more of these types of guests on, not because I find them particularly interesting, but because it proves Bret's point, and it triggers and smokes out the very pearl clutching that Bret has been highlighting and is contrary to everything Bret believes and stands for.

R. M.

Love the “old man” phase.

N.M. Janice.

I never said his politics are “controversial”. I don’t think he has any politics. I think he’s trying to be subversive, but he’s just a bore. This is the end of line, Stephen. I’m not interested in engaging with weirdos who use terms like “everyone knows” or can only apply their world view to “left” and “right” or Democrat and Trump. I actually forgot about all the incels, and dudes who wished they had gfs, in these threads. Yes, Stephen, I’m going to “go insane”. Haha GTFOH.

M. Nero Nava

Have any of y'all seen The American Friend or Ripley's Game? I'm halfway through American Friend and it's alright. Ripley's Game was great.

Stephen

The guy's politics seem pretty uncontroversial to me. Everyone knows the left are the crazy ones. Nero are you gonna go insane if Trump gets back in?

Stephen

Same, I liked this version. Not sure if there’s been a better shot show perhaps ever? Unless there’s something I’m missing.

Jonathan Davis

You’re still here? Oh joy.

M. Nero Nava

"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."

Billy Schafer

Totally agree

Nikki Ferrari

Excellent. Just finished the elevator episode

Caz

The Jerk is a classic (I can quote it verbatim), as are the others in his Carl Reiner trilogy: Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid and Man With Two Brains. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is also great.

Paul Richardson

Who “likes” AI?

N.M. Janice.

M. Nero Nava is not a serious person.

Thumperdinck

I don’t like this guys style of argumentation. At one point bret and he are talking about ai and he’s just like “well I don’t like it and it doesn’t make me feel good so it should be shut down” like isn’t that the sort of close minded overly emotional thinking you’re fighting against ?

Harold B

A long Bret monologue? We are so back baby

Charlie C

Appreciate the monologue, enjoyed the conversation. Guess I’m living under a rock, never heard of Tim Pool before…👉🌱

Ashley

Bret has definitely entered his “old man phase”. He needs to shake things up a little. Maybe macro dose ecstasy on a regular basis and engage in some light physical stalking of his enemies.

Lionel

'A coloured helmet of black hair that doesn't match the face' is a terrible way to describe Jay McInerney lol

GC

This was a great discussion.

Ben

Very uncool. Thats straight up loser behavior.

N.M. Janice.

Next up on my watch list.

N.M. Janice.

Mother and the Whore is the best French movie ever basically

Seneca Garcia

I stepped away as a Patreon because I thought it was monumentally uncool for someone to mingle with commenters, copy and paste what I said, and then doxx me while I’m speaking with other paying listeners. I stepped away because I felt the little community was infringed upon. I’ll always be disappointed, but whatever. It really was the pettiest shit I have ever encountered

M. Nero Nava

Can’t help but notice that EVERYONE’S life and identity revolves around online presence? Go outside ! Touch grass

David Hardin

Back on form with that monologue. Loved it.

Justin

Yeaaah, maybe I’m a bit biased…

M. Nero Nava

I always enjoy Bret book talk.

Patrick

Considering he doxxed a fan it’s a bit ridiculous and childish for him to be invited back as a guest. I mean just doxxing a commenter is like 10 year old kid behavior. Which makes sense given he works for Tim Pool, who recently was talking about how funny it is women are getting randomly punched in NY

OSOS

That guy and I are going to listen on a run . Will let you know when we get back !

David Hardin

To be fair… he doxed you and you’re biased.

Nikki Ferrari

Dune part 2 is subpar trash. You're not missing anything. Civil War is the only movie that matters right now. Go see that instead.

Richard Raymond

That raises a good question though: is Bret butthurt? I mean, he's gay. Or does he top?

slimshadyfan666

This guy’s a dolt with trite talking points. Wasn’t surprised to learn he works for Tim Pool

Oscar

Not quite sure what you’re saying. If you want me to be specific about inarticulate: it’s the speech pattern, the space filling words, the regurgitating phrases. It’s all very millenial. Maybe that bothers me. His politics are mostly dumb, and shock jokey hot take nonsense. I don’t take him serious in that department. He’s just a bad guest, I’d argue the only bad guest they’ve ever had. The ep opens with a great monologue so that made it worthwhile

M. Nero Nava

IDK he sounds pretty articulate to me. I guess you just don't like his politics or Tim's and are whining about him here.

Poetical Gore

OMG the butthurt

Poetical Gore

Great opening monologue. Going to check out Purple Noon now. Thanks Bret!

Darren

I remember this guy coming off as a total douche the last time he was on the pod. Guessing I can expect the same from this? Check this guys insta out, his posts are screenshots of his own tweets that read like a cringey 15 year old. “The country fought a civil war to make sure everyone would be a slave” “Crazy how they started doing lobotomies remotely through tvs and phone” How old is this guy? I guess Bret does like them young.

OSOS

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

it was pretty much unbearable embarrassing bootlicking (imagine thinking that elon is a genius and a savant) til the literature part.

Oleg

With our thoughts we make the world. Enjoy life while you can. And skip Dune.

Thomas Edwards

Yes I also appreciated the monologue very much 👏🏻

PETER GREER

Brilliant opening monologue. I’m a few years younger than Bret but have also come to fear that I won’t have enough time to read all the books I want to.

Stuart Chivers

I am obsessed with Netflix's "Ripley." Totally in love. Wish it was 10-parts so I could spend just a little more time in that world. Andrew Scott is like the love child of Sam Rockwell and Scoot McNairy to me. Couldn't look away.

John Q. Thompson

It’s wild how a guest can be so well read, and seemingly knowledgeable about literature—but in turn present himself in a completely inarticulate and unentertaining fashion. I was impressed by his knowledge of literature. He doesn’t sound like a person who knows how to read. I feel the ripples on my brain flatten when he shares ideas. Also, I just came back to the pod after reeling from this tool’s last appearance (nearly being away from the pod half a year) and here he is again. Hilarious. Perfect timing.

M. Nero Nava
