I almost fell out of my chair hearing the name of my small, obscure hometown (Addison, Illinois) on a BEE podcast episode. Wonder if I’ve met this star.

Joe Stallone

“I’m not gay,” says this guy. Yeah you’re bi. What a clown.

Tommy Stronach

I used to count the days until a new episode dropped. Now I forget about it for ages and then see “Huh, there’s a couple of new episodes”. Sometimes I get around to listening to them, sometimes I don’t. No great loss; they’re thin gruel nowadays.

Mr Sam Loud

Great ep, funny and interesting. Also, Adam needs his own show, pronto.

Matt

You bring up great points. Bret’s art usually has an innate commercial appeal based on the things he’s into but like all art there are points that are more unique to him and don’t have much appeal even to a niche audience. It seems like the pod is going through its glamorama stage where even his diehards won’t necessarily want to follow him. I guess the question is when the pod will enter a Shards sort of renaissance of what made the pod number one for some of us

Harold B

Maybe it’s not the appropriate way to share this but since I can’t sleep and I keep thinking about it I will just share this movie I premiered on Valentine’s Day about Vampires living in a depressing post-pandemic reality hoping maybe one day Bret or Adam watch it, it has won 5 international film festival awards including best feature film in Brussels, Belgium. It’s called Love Bites and you can watch it in chunks, I hope someone likes it. All the best, Christian. https://youtu.be/lbP-OV5KHhA?si=ZUQPIwICIPSbzfjJ

Christian Leon

I do think Bret is in a transition and he is struggling and healing and going through processes we have no idea how hard or difficult or painful. We get but a glimpse and yet we still are allowed into a space where we see the world through his eyes for a little while every time an episode is released; I don’t know what brought you here but I am here for the man behind the artist and I still get that every single time. Don’t we all love it when people who don’t like a movie leave, quietly?

Christian Leon

The LexG Movie Podcast is unrivaled

Darren Ankenman

yes I’d have to agree with you. I only listen to him when there is a good guest but that has been a while by now… tried Rogan again the other day but couldn’t take more than a couple minutes of his whining about the woke. And I prefer listening to intelligent people anyways. Really tough to find good pod hosts. Bret is my favorite, if only the guests were better and on a level with Quentin and Sam.

Roscoe

Maron really got insufferable these last few years, but he gets the best guests for some reason, maybe because his interview style is so non-offensive, sometimes he barely even knows anything about his guests and refuses to research anything. It's basically the same as all those soulless TV late night shows with boring jokes and questions.

S. Glaskov

Thanks for all the recommendations!

S. Glaskov

Quentin’s podcast with Roger Avery, ‘Video Archives’, is terrific although it’s on hiatus at the moment while QT shoots his new movie. I also love Club Random but prefer to watch it on YT. I gave up on Maron after he got TDS.

Paul Richardson

I appreciate the curve ball in your programming of guests. We can always hear X who wrote a book (that, frankly, I probably won't read because I already read too much for work). Though I wont be watching his work, Dante created a fascinating self-portrait of a man who has made very difficult choices, succeeded, and lives with integrity. Great episode.

T Frick

Most of them have insufferable hosts… but I like WTF with Marc Maron when he has good guests. Team Deakins podcast is great if you’re into the filmmaking process. And I like Tetragrammaton with Rick Rubin… again depending on the guest. Also Club Random with Bill Maher. I’m sure there are other good ones out there. Good luck!

Roscoe

Really disappointed with the guest output this year. After the great december episodes with Tarantino and Sam Wasson we only seem to get some cancelled and uninteresting has-beens every week apart from the Todd drama. Seeing porn-stars on the pod really makes me question whether i still want to pay for my subscription anymore since the recent output really seems low-effort. I‘m sure there‘s a good few current interesting artists or media figures in L.A. that would happily come on the pod.

S. Glaskov

I‘m not satisfied with the recent guest output either but struggling to find another worthwile movie podcast. What other pods would you recommend?

S. Glaskov

The guest game this season has been at a new low point. What about Refn? Schrader? Sam Levinson? Isn’t this a movie podcast? The other pods are running circles around you with their guest game. And they are free!

Roscoe

Wow. You really have no faith in his YouTube Channel

Someone Else

The fact that Bret is genuinely interested in other people’s lives and also a great novelist are probably two sides of the same coin. I don’t really see the distinction people are making between Bret’s interest in character and story in film and his obvious interest in exploring those same questions in these interviews with people who have lived unusual lives or made choices most people wouldn’t have made. Seems likely that these kinds of conversations are part of his writing process.

Someone Else

I usually like the Q+As more than the interviews. I would be fine with mostly monologues and one big guest a season

Someone Else

will make a quick prediction that Bret will address the negative comments on the next q and a and will claim he has ‘no idea’ how we couldn’t have enjoyed this

Alex Waller

the only issue is that the time put in is essentially what is justifying paying. that’s the only thing that distinguishes it from the endless sea of people blabbing

Alex Waller

Great episode. Loved Dante's comment that porn isn't remotely 'liberating'. I think a lot of people, possibly even Bret himself, buy into that idea when, in truth, it's pretty seedy and, at times, lethal. I'm not being moralistic here, just nice that Dante doesn't have that airbrushed view of it. Some great comments from Adam at the end too!

GC

Thanks for sharing the comments, gave me a heads upto not to bother listening. Not really into porn discussions in general, still worth six bucks a month to pick and choose.

Jim Weaver

I could see that too, I don’t think the Todd drama did him any favors sadly.

Ashley

I think he’s depressed. Honestly, I don’t know.

Nikki Ferrari

Fair question. The pod is close now to look as just a money grab. A suggestion would be to either go back to the sponsor model, or do more infrequent pods of higher quality.

Duke

About as Bret a guest as it gets haha. One of those episodes you can have on in the background while cooking or something else and catch most of it. I kind of think this kind of casual guest is just what Bret needed after all that Todd malarkey. I do hope we get some movie or culture monologues back at some point but as someone who has written far less impressive essays to read out to one hundred max listeners on YouTube, it takes a fucking LOT of time. Enjoyed Adam at the end. Squirt goggles. Damn.

David Willis

Great episode!

Ben

I agree Alex

Ashley

I think it's fair to say less effort is being put in. Just the fact that he's no longer writing a monologue and winging it pretty much makes that inarguable. Since Bret is such an incredibly articulate speaker he can get away with it but still...

Alex Waller

Yeah I guess I meant more in terms of quality of (the dreaded word) “content”. It’s kinda hard to go from Friedkin and Tarentino to some dude no ones ever heard of doing gay porn and riding motorcycles…I didn’t even dislike this guest, he was fine. It’s just something I’ve noticed being a member for about 5 or 6 years now, the episodes used to be way more interesting. Initially I think most people are here to get his creative commentary on film, books and (obviously) culture etc. I just feel like the luster has diminished somewhat in recent times. Which made me think about what the pod is actually functioning as now. Bret’s great, that doesn’t mean every conversation is worth airing, and sometimes things feel a little sloppy. You don’t have to completely pander to the audience but I think on some level you have to keep in mind why the audience is present. He needs an audience to have a show in the first place or else he’s just conversing into a void. There is a back and forth there. And yeah, no shit everyone can leave and come back as they please, duh.

Ashley

He owes you nothing. You pay for the amenities of the tier and that’s what you get. Leave if you don’t like it. Or take a break. Paying for the pod doesn’t mean you get anything above the tier description.

Nikki Ferrari

Great Comment. I agree with a lot of this, especially regarding the monologues. Those were usually great to listen to so it didn't matter if the guest was crumby, which plenty have been especially when the switch to patreon happened. I really appreciate that Bret wants to have the guest in person and understand that will limit the pool. However, I've thought since the patreon switch that 75% of the guests have essentially been the same person. Not terrible or anything, but just kind of entitled and my biggest qualm, having really no enthusiasm, or interest, for anything that is coming out. I totally get that it is a mixed bag going to the movies or whatever, but I like people who come out of at least a few of those really excited about what they saw. What summed all that up for me was when the best compliment Maria Semple could give a film was calling Tar 'diverting' or something, which was just so petty and reeked of jealousy. I'm with you too on the canned rants. Bret's culture take was very concise and specific, but now he'll pretty much promote any take that is contrary, regardless of its merit. But yeah, I agree it is a bit played out. I think Bret and Adam might agree with that as well from all of the Q and A episodes, seeking out help from the listeners to bring up topics to talk about.

Alex Waller

Honestly there’s been worse guests on the pod, but it does bring up an interesting question of how much does Bret owe us as the audience, especially the ones paying. I will say I miss the days of the long opening monologues and an intriguing director or writer. Bret always says he does things for himself, doesn’t care about audience (which I get in terms of art making, but this pod isn’t exactly the same as that) and it’s his pod so he’ll do what he wants. I mean yeah it’s his pod and I don’t like when people modify behavior just to acquiesce to the loudest squeaking wheel, but I do think that the pod has declined in quality over the last year or so. It’s kind of lost its charm, and seems more like played out culture rants than intriguing dialogue. How much does Bret actually owe us? Especially those paying for the top tier. Of course we can always opt out, but I think for some of us we’ve been here a long time and want to stick around in the hopes it will pick up again to what it once was. Sometimes I think he loses sight that the audience is just as necessary to the pod as his and Adam’s production of it.

Ashley

If you're setting the bar this low anyway, why not just go ahead and have a black guest on for once?

slimshadyfan666

Bret has been getting away with murder on this pod. The reason they do Q&As (even long before the Todd legal issue) is because it requires no/minimal time or preparation to create this podcast ‘product’. Having (good) guests that require thoughtful interviews, or deep dives on film, tv, music etc requires time. This is just a shrewd business move to make money for basically nothing and a lot of fools on here are too dumb to realize it.

Vin Bravo

This was great. I loved it. I’m now looking forward to Adam as much as Bret

Kerry

You guys are haters, Dante was a really fascinating guest. I come here mostly for the movie talk but Bret always manages to make his niche interests interesting

hollywoodending

Great episode.

Henry Gessner

Easily my least favorite episode. The occasional porn comment or anecdote is fine but a whole episode is not interesting. But I also realize this is the BEE podcast and Bret chooses guests and topics that interest him. Still hoping Blake Butler or Joe McGinniss Jr make it onto the show.

D Michael Hardy

Come here for movie, tv and book chat. Lasted 30 seconds with this episode. Boring AF porn ‘bollocks’

Kevan christie

Adam is onto something about stuntmen & gay for pay actors sharing similar DNA

Normaling

Flagstaff is beautiful

MisterBlasty

This was great. Really enjoyed Adam jumping in there at the end, would be fun to hear some of his war stories from shooting porn sometime.

Casey

Until 12:00 I was willing to bet Adam bowed out of being in this one.

Alex Bielovich

His excitement about the guest was contagious ! Either that or he’s laid off the booze and Xanax since Todd left

Keith campbell

This podcast has such good endings, and then that music.

Thomas Edwards

You may be the only one

Constantine

While the cat’s away!

Dan Palmer

Lies! Lol

Erick

BEE’s shock when someone lives somewhere other than New York or LA is always amusing

Keith campbell

It's good that he wasn't pushing for his profession to be normalized. He's basically doing a dirty job to earn a living in this messed up economy. No preachiness. Hopefully he can find a good marketing or advertising job when he hits 35.

Garret Rachunok

yeah I'd take what you heard with grain of salt. especially when it comes from someone that at one point said, "I had to move out of my trailer and landed in Flagstaff".

Constantine

Flagstaff sounds great

Happyhead

Somehow…boring?

Moz

I mean, you really have to hand it to this podcast. From influential directors like William Friedkin one week to a gay for pay porn star in another.

Constantine

Podcast One Speed Talk Bret back for the attack.

George Quartz

"A nine-to-five."

Matt De Marco

I've been waiting for this for so long.

Laura B. Farrugia

…. And at the end of the day, I learned so much.

Pp358

Oh shit here we go

Happyhead

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

I’m glad he jumped in. Asked a lot of obvious stuff Bret wouldn’t because of his love of the straight gay man fantasy

Keith campbell

I feel like I'm on pornhub and xvideos a lot, not to mention it's all over my Twitter/X and I've never seen this guy's name before, but consider me educated now.

John Q. Thompson

“What are your hobbies…” Tehe!

Patrick

Bret’s got his date voice on..

Ashley

Adam could not have been less subtle at the end lol

Zach

Nice Dirk Diggler thumbnail, by the way!

N.M. Janice.

Fascinating. Thank you

Vaughan Smith

It finally happened. Strap in, Adam.

N.M. Janice.

Fuck yeah

Matt

Can't wait to listen!
