Happy birthday Ser Bret

Erick

I’m glad someone asked if Brett had watched Cruel Intentions, and I really hope he rewatches it. Some of the characters in that movie really remind me of some of the characters in his books.

KayCee

I noticed a few people recently wearing Broadcast News t shirts

Mary Walker

I don’t want to reopen this thing, but basically I said something about him in the comments (yes, these comments). It wasn’t nice. He reposted claiming he’s going to make t shirts and stuff— posting my comment on all his socials. I dm’d him and said “so you’re posting my comment and claiming you want to use it for stuff” and he responded by saying “this guy wants credit for what he said…” and then started doing stories about me. I had 100 phone calls at my work (it’s fairly easy to find out where I work, it’s semi notable to LA people), and he was reposting people sending me harassing messages, and my info. I wrote to Adam about it, and he didn’t respond. I’ve been a long time fan of the pod, since the beginning. I also way over paid to be a patreon for a year. So I felt a little burned. Whatever. It’s not BEE and Adam’s job to monitor their guests, but I felt like us platinum people are a little more involved in the show. Cashman was just a guest. So, I felt slighted. I’m over it. But, I am going to be more careful with those type of personalities who live for being on social media. They’re my least favorite character in contemporary culture.

M. Nero Nava

You got doxxed by Shane Cashman?

Happyhead

I just hate when he’s not accurate.

J.A.

Thank god for you

Nikki Ferrari

Nice one.

Iain

Happy belated birthday, Bret! I’d recommend Bret go back and try True Detective season 3 again. I recently rewatched it and couldn’t get over how great it was. Much better on a second viewing. The fourth season? Night Country? Yeah, appalling television. Laugh out loud bad. An American Family sounds like something I might want to check out as well.

Iain

Happy Birthday Bret!! 🖤🖤🖤

Virginia Gonzales

Regarding the mention of the documentary, An American Family. I discovered a link to this PBS series on the incredible site Ubuweb a few months back. Fascinating stuff. Link: https://ubu.com/film/aaf.html

Mark Mann

“Nobody knows anything” is not the first sentence of Adventures in the Screen Trade. It appears, twice, on page 39.

J.A.

Its just you and me and we just disagree

Nikki Ferrari

Forget Jody Foster in True Detective, take Bret's tip and watch The Little Girl Who Lives Down The Lane. An amazing thriller.

Edi Panta

Carey Mulligan was good, I thought she had a chance after watching maestro but it never gained much momentum. I was definitely pulling for Lily as she is a University of Montana alum like my dad and two uncles. That would have made the second alum from the school’s drama program to win an Oscar, JK Simmons being the other.

Alex Waller

Agreed, although every director is only as good as their script and DP.

Paul Richardson

I thought Carey Mulligan in Maestro was the best female performance, and I don’t normally like her.

Paul Richardson

Sexy Sixties!

Vincent Kouters

I really hope Brett shares his thoughts on the Oscars results!

Christian Leon

Modern Romance. So great

Darren Ankenman

Bret is so gloomy about turning 60. It's better than turning 70 or 80!

Dave Mason

Speaking of Swans, when are you guys going to book gen x queen Diane Lane?

Richard Raymond

Personally I think Defending Your Life and Mother are Brook's best

Richard Raymond

Age, as death, remains the great leveller. Everyone gets put through the wringer, yet dissimilar fortunes (read: inheritances) mean that some cushions are far bigger than others when you crash. So pick your parents wisely.

mr greyez

There should be a drinking game for emptying a shot each time there is a "I just don't care", or variation thereof. I also very much enjoyed the Todd episodes. Sometimes it's healing to hear that even artists one admires and who live a life that seems desirable from the outside end up having the same problems as me, my parents, my friends and coworkers. I hope you'll get through this sonehow. A belated happy birthday from another regular Millennial listener who owns books 🫶

Henry Gessner

Happy Belated Bday, BEE! I took a year off (after the whole Shane Cashman doxing thing). But, upon hearing about all the personal stuff—I came back. Because, as weird as it sounds, I felt like a friend was in trouble. So I felt compelled to come back. Show sounds great, I hope this year is great. You deserve it.

M. Nero Nava

Hey, Happy birthday Bret. And welcome to the club. It ain't so bad. Adam - always love your work.

JEREMY ROBERTS

I have not seen that, thanks for the rec I'll check it out!

John Q. Thompson

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Have you seen Rocco? It used to be on Netflix too, around 2016. It was a documentary about him, quite fascinating. Will check out this series, sounds very interesting.

Sértő-Radics Sarolta

Final question on the pod for the second time in a row. If it happens again I’ll be a recurring segment

Will McLaren

I haven't actually. Came out when I was in my teens and was aware of it because I was watching "The Shield" at the time on FX, but I'm glad you brought it up cause now when I've got thru all the more recent Ryan Murphy shows I think I may go back and check it out.

John Q. Thompson

On the William Goldman question that Bret didn't touch on, I'm always surprised when critics try to discredit the auteur theory. I don't think that every director is one, but there is clear evidence of the theory in practice throughout cinema history. Yes, film is a collaborative art form, but that doesn't mean that sometimes there isn't a director who is steering the ship towards a specific and idiosyncratic vision. I don't think anyone would argue that Bob Dylan isn't the primary author of Blonde on Blonde, because there are other musicians playing on it. No matter who is on his crew, a Wes Anderson film always looks and sounds like a Wes Anderson film.

N.M. Janice.

Also screw you Adam for relegating me to the second round of platinum questions for the second time in a row. My questions are elite.

Harold B

It was definitely more subtle. Hard to say if it was better. Guess it depends on preference for theatrical or more toned down approaches to portraying a character

Harold B

Ever seen Nip/Tuck?

Harold B

Mixtea's rhymes! But do they taste good?

Twan Van Geel

Lily Gladstone got robbed. She definitely had the better performance and brought great dignity to her character. There’s pretty much no movie there if her performance isn’t as great as it is. Emma Stone’s performance was just shock value .

Alex Waller

You haven’t read Peter Carey!? Man, I think he’s a great writer after reading a few of his books this year. Just a great classic storyteller with interesting thoughts about today’s world. I’d recommend True History of the Kelly Gang to anybody. Just disregard the terrible movie adaptation and dive in

Alex Waller

Also, anyone watching the Netflix series "SUPERSEX" based on pornstar Rocco Siffredi? Would love to hear Bret's take on that one.

John Q. Thompson

I came to "Feud" late, never saw the first season until this second one was already in tow, but I love it. I've actually come to love all the Ryan Murphy productions for the most part, some American Horror Story aside. But "Feud" itself, the opening credits really remind me of Hitchcock for some reason. The first season of "Feud" and the Netflix series "Ratched" really had a Hitchcock influence to me. So I'd love nothing more than if a third season of "Feud" dealt with the movie biz in some fashion.

John Q. Thompson

For everyone who loves Paul Schrader, he was recently on The Adam Friedland Show in a rather unconventional interview, a must-see for fans: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu-Z6iHUoqg

John Q. Thompson

Fun to listen to Bret’s Oscar predictions after seeing the winners. Pretty much got everything right even Emma stones surprise upset he sensed she could take it from lily Gladstone

Harold B

Thanks for answering the Refn question! Bummed you guys aren't working together but absolutely love you two are just guys hanging out.

Matt

Hell yeah!

N.M. Janice.
