S8E7: A Very Special Round 2

Bret discusses shock giving way to acceptance, a door left open too long and the challenge of making cinema move like life on drugs as he responds to questions from Platinum listeners on the air.

S8E7: A Very Special Round 2

Comments

Very good recommendation, than you. At times it felt a bit like an afterschool special, but it is still haunting after a week. Just as you described it.

Sértő-Radics Sarolta

I hope Bret moves on and finds someone his age and enjoys the rest of his life with quality time, can’t imagine the books he would write under ideal emotional conditions. As for Todd, well, I also hope he moves on, there is a song by Gustavo Cerati that comes to mind called ‘Adios’, he sings: “…to learn to say goodbye is to grow...” I think his wings will spread before the fall and he will soar to new creative heights! Very interesting special episodes, I appreciate the intimacy and the honesty, thank you Adam, thank you Bret. x

Leap Year is always the same year as the Presidential election and the summer Olympics

J Hay

These two very specials unreliable narrator will juxtapose nicely with a very special a year from now when Bret's friend is out of his legal trouble and he can fill in the blanks for us.

I’m a new subscriber., really enjoying the podcast, thank you Bret (and Adam). All the best to you.

Sodaheiress

As a genXer, all this talk of coke makes me nostalgic for the 80s/90s 😂

Sodaheiress

I listened to VHII today! Still a banger. And yes, he ruuules.

Patrick

When Brett mentions that you should forget the book when watching Less Than Zero that's understandable what I have found is, I'm now reading Michael Mann's Heat 2 and also having read American Psycho after -long after - seeing the movie, is that watching the movie before reading the book enhances the book in a very special way because now you have these actors voices in your head assuming everything was cast right it really works out and of course when it comes to less than zero and American Psycho it's brilliant so I guess my recommendation is to someone who hasn't read the book or watch the movie somehow is watch the movie first then read the book.

Travis Films

Adam won me over when he mentioned listening to VH on the way in a few episodes back

Shawn T

Seems like you care lol

Ashley

The pod is Bret’s pod dawg he can talk about his life if he wants to LOL listen or don’t. No one cares about how you find it boring tbh

Blizzy

Bret is so marnie and Adam is so hannah horvath

Blizzy

Also, your kind of being presumptuous about how Bret and Adam identify neurologically.

R. M.

Non-mentally ill people are "idiots" for trying to understand the mentally ill people that are abusing them? Actually what the neuro t's should be doing is going no contact and finding non-mentally ill people to have relationships with, not enabling, trying to understand, rewarding, and trying to get back with abusive mentally ill people, especially ones that would call "neurotypical" people "idiots" for trying to make sense of their abuse.

R. M.

Great job- thank you for your candor

EJS

Good point but written awfully.

Luke B.

the comedy of watching a bunch of idiot neurotypicals "trying" to "understand" the experiences of a mentally ill person is neverending

slimshadyfan666

Interesting comments, but not interesting enough to listen to the episode. Here’s to Todd’s health, as well as Bret’s. As for drug addiction movies, it’s enough to read about the addiction of all the people who make them, really don’t need to see movies about addiction itself.

Jim Weaver

The door closing was a nice touch. I mean, c'mon, it says a door open too long in the episode description. My only thoughts were wondering if Adam was going to raid the fridge while Bret was out.

Alex Waller

Re addiction films, Christiane F stands out. I think it’s the best film about addicts. Very dark, atmospheric, and disturbing

Marcelo

Ah cmon it's good listening 😝

Chris De Burgha

The ending HAHA

Laura B. Farrugia

Adam’s contributions just continue to amplify week after week, year after year. He’s my fav. Excellent discussion, gents. Be well, Toddster.

Patrick

Adam’s groan when he hears Todd is still running for president…

Summer711

Hang in there Adam.

Summer711

Yeah, also not interested in getting too deep into any relationship of those whom I’m not close to. Also not sure if it’s good for anyone involved, who knows. Nvm, listened to the entire thing.

Luke B.

Very shocked that Adam never explored Eminem...he seems like he would have been at the perfect age when he arrived on the scene. Read the comments and some ppl are like who cares about Todd...but actually a lot of ppl in this community...I saw an insane reddit post on the podcast sub asking why bret started to date Todd. These podcasts are for ppl like them. Very interesting, I would love to find out more about his sister, but he might not want to go into that. I read less than zero this year and decided to google his sisters after and was shocked to see the death announcement...anyway liked this episode...hope everyone has a good week

Florence

have a sad run (bb)

mr greyez

I think you’re right.

Bee Garns

It was uncomfortable. I think Bret should stop talking about Todd because I get the feeling he’s not ready (will never be, maybe) to see Todd for who/what he is. The abrupt end felt like a response to mounting emotion from Adam pushing back about some of the Todd stuff and Adam was being mild. The police were actually called most recently - the picture showed about 6 officers with very stern expressions - because Todd was making death threats towards a lot of people including the Kardashians. This was the live stream which prompted that visit: https://www.youtube.com/live/Ddf2kgiQn3Y?si=tu8xD0DIgkymFkGK

Lanark

It was sort of disturbing, and even distressing. Too sudden and abrupt. I mean, he actually just stood up and walked out while the episode was still being recorded? The closing of the door could have been edited out, and nobody would have noticed. Why was it left in, and what does it mean?

Allan Sherwood

I laughed at the ending 😂

Dave Mason

The abruptness and the sound of the door was kind of jarring.

Justin

I'm kind of bored of this relationship stuff as well. Would prefer just listening to him talk about movies than this clearly very odd and unhealthy relationship which Bret won't end for some reason (I suppose some mental health issue of his own but I don't know).

Billy Vega

Am I the only one not that interested in hearing about Bret’s unhinged boyfriend? I get part one, kind of clearing up facts & what happened. But part 2 going on about the relationship, the live streams, doling out advice to people who don’t know what toxic relationships feel like…I mean c‘mon! Lol Who really wants to hear this group therapy session? It’s kinda funny Bret writes a novel about an unhinged disturbed teenager, seems like he’s also dating one. Life imitating art much? (Or vice versa)

Ashley

Just retired and facing the same challenge in terms of social interaction. Reading, writing, socializing are all goals of mine for keeping the mind sharp.

Dave

while wanking.

Running = eating a pizza

Dave Mason

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

As the Buddha says, offer no resistance.

Thomas Edwards

where is the gay for pay episode already???

Poetical Gore

lol I learned about leap year in 1st grade public school

Alex Waller

Seriously, neither Bret nor Adam know why we have a leap year? Those Buckley school fees were a great investment...

David Lowe

Now that you mention it, I think you might be right. I’m not someone that uses social media to post selfies for validation but I use it for the social interaction and do enjoy it when I receive lots of replies back to tweets. I probably should spend less time online but it’s hard to interact with people in the real world.

Bee Garns

Sounds like social media is your drug. It’s just been so normalized that you can’t really see it.

Craig

As someone who has never done any drugs, I find films about drug addiction absolutely fascinating. I’ve never had any desire to try any drug, what’s the appeal and why do some people go from casual user to addict? Regarding depression, I think it’s a generational thing as well. As a millennial who uses far too much social media, it’s hard to escape everyone talking about their “feelings”. I’m constantly talking about how I feel about a subject and find it hard to separate my emotions from the facts. When my depression gets bad I know I need to take time off social media before I lose my mind.

Bee Garns

Agree, a very strange ending! Could it be a way of Bret saying he’s “shutting the door” on this whole Todd situation or is it the film critic in me that’s over analyzing everything again?! Lol 😂

Bee Garns

What a bizarre ending.
