Matthew Perry’s best role was as Mike Kresteva a lawyer on The Good Wife. He played evil and corrupt surprisingly well.

Sodaheiress

I know all of 5150. My dad used to play the tape constantly in the car when it came out. I effing love it. All the cheesy songs that Bret mentioned, very nostalgic for me. Great stuff. But I also love Roth Van Halen.

Phoenix

Couldn't find the Matthew Perry directed movie Bret is talking about. Anybody know the reference?

Giovanni Loddo

As far as docs about writers, have you seen The Rough South of Harry Crews by Gary Hawkins? He made The Rough South of Tim McLaurin and The Rough South of Larry Brown as well. The Crews piece by far the best of the three.

James Beatty

Never in my life have I wanted to steal a premise until I heard about Fallen Angel - the ultimate Christmas story. What a great idea. Of course mine would be, I'm sure, far different than BEE's but we'll never know.

Travis Films

Rockin' episode! Never thought the Stones and VH would make it to the BEEP. Adam - yep, you know your Rock 'n roll! Van Hagar sucks. I tried to get into them in the eighties ... nah. Fair Warning is brutal, old-school glorious! Never knew Bret had a relationship with the Stones - all I remembered was that he didn't find any of them sexy. Great scenes in movies? Here's one - Dennis Hopper & Chris Walken in True Romance. Brando has hundreds of miracle moments.... ***I'd always wanted to ask Bret about Kenneth Anger, but my Pateon status denied that chance - and then somebody else asked (thanks) - not much of a relationship between the two. Still think his CV was perfect to be a guest, though. I did meet him once at a screening/book-signing thing and he was pleasant to me. Bret - did you ever get into the Bunker Spreckels legend? (Anger made a billboard about him) There's a doco out there, too. Cheers, guys.

JEREMY ROBERTS

Need to get Bret’s take on Mother God on HBO

Marcelo

Ten minutes of listening to her genuinely depressed me. I had to turn it off.

Stuart Chivers

Huge fan of red scare, but thought ivy wolk mostly grating and charmless. Can’t imagine Bret would find her anything but annoying.

Bee

some girls is my favorite of their albums. def the one i have listened to the most from beginning to end

Collin Myers

lol

Collin Myers

Point taken about speaking for myself, but two minutes was rambling on about a subject Bret clearly wasn’t interested in, yawn.

Jim Weaver

He didn’t ramble on at all he gave his opinion on Van Halen for barely two minutes and he was responding directly to a question. “Few of us care”. Who made you the spokesperson for Bret fans? Speak for yourself not the rest of us.

David Willis

Please Adam, don’t ramble on. You’re a good man, but few of us care about your views on Van Halen, or most subjects actually. We’re here to hear Bret, do your best to bring more out of him, and not turn the mirror on yourself.

Jim Weaver

Sarah Sweeney hopefully took a sizable check to pander to those boomer sentiments in that video, playing air guitar on a tired old convertible while showing off her incredible zoomer tits.

Jonathan Davis

I thought it was a double, too. It just looked a little off.

Justin

Well acted and iconic film scenes? Tim Roth & Friends in Alan Clarke’s Made in Britain. Watch “Trevor’s Speech” on YouTube. https://youtu.be/ntHhdcRmUH4?si=inYh0oEnCcecjDbR

craig ronald marchinkoski

Damn Dream Scenario was really good. I member think director was on pod and did not sell story really well. But im glad i went in kinda blind. Nic Cage was really incredible BEE was right.

Alexander Quattlander

Just watched No Hard Feelings and I’m almost certain the full frontal nude scene is a body double with digital face replacement - although Jen Law is on record denying she used a body double.

Paul Richardson

Sherwood Anderson’s Winesburg, Ohio is great! Looking forward to the new collection of Barthelme stories with Bret’s intro! In that era (maybe a bit late) I loved Richard Ford’s SS collection, Rock Springs. Does Bret ever read later critical studies of his books or about the times when he came of age as a writer? In other words, has he read Daniel Sinykin’s book Big Fiction?

John Presnall

Mel Gibson. Gallipoli.

Thomas Edwards

Adam has the Van Halen thing nailed.

Brian Aldrich

Regarding a potential guest, Paul Murray, an Irish writer who was recently up for the booker would be a cool choice. Bret mentioned him a few podcasts back referencing his great and unusual and disturbing 2010 novel "skippy dies" (the storyline of which unfortunately proved prescient judging by recent news). He would be a fantastic guest. I think he will be looked back on as one of the best and most interesting writers of our time (totally under appreciated by the general public as it stands), and would probably have a great convo with the guys

Chris De Burgha

When’s Johnny Depp/Betty Davis going to be on the podcast

Sam Leuenberger

When’s Franzen?

Sam Leuenberger

When’s Eugenides going to be on the podcast?

Sam Leuenberger

I’m glad someone finally had the guts to call out John Hamm.

Lionel

Kevin Turen, did he die from the VAX? Probably as myocarditis is a killer!

Knokkel knokkel

Yo they’re gentrifying that stretch between studio city & Hollywood

Alex Holt

Someone suggested her as a guest

Ashley

I remember having to read winesburg Ohio in high school, really enjoyed it. Have never really thought of it since, that discussion took me way back. Thank you for the Paul Murray and Emma cline recommendations.

Kerry

Adam is right about van halen sucking after 1984. But VH 1 is their best album.

Poetical Gore

Agreed.

Paul Richardson

Yes, but can't forget Their Satanic Majesty's Request and the Aftermath before Beggar's Banquet, and then late seventies/early eighties were great with Some Girls, Emotional Rescue, and Tattoo You

Alex Waller

Why would he? Or do I need to listen to this? I’m actually just in the comments for something to watch. I just listened to her on red scare

steevross

Sexy Beast is my fav. Saw it twice in that movie theater on Union Square, NYC circa 2000. 🙌

Patrick

Hard disagree. A testament to how great they are, in my surely meaningless opinion: in 1981 they put out a solid album in Tattoo You mostly of leftover songs from Black and Blue, and this is almost 20 years after they started out in the 60s. Tattoo You is severely underrated and probably known as the " Start Me Up" record but it has some bangers. Would encourage anyone to give it a listen. Holds up well in the context of the Stones' legacy but also a great early 80s rock/pop record.

Collin Myers

Undercover thumps. underrated stones album.

Brad Elmore

Jonathan Glazer is the most important British film director of the 21st century. Can’t wait for Zone of Interest.

Paul Richardson

Correct.

Brad Elmore

The Christmas story sounds fascinating. Publish it!

E

She needs an “ugly” role, a la Margot Robbie or Charlize Theron.

Artemis Fedorchuk

"You laughed at friends?" - Adam

Robyn O'Neil

Also Bret so great to hear you talk about the beauty of the short story form. Wish you’d write some more !!

Harold B

Fair concern on Sydney Sweeney maybe not being a movie star. I was disappointed to see she’s doing a rom com. But she was good in Reality although the movie was a little too preachy for my taste. Hopefully she takes on more substantive projects

Harold B

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Wonderful episode thank you

PETER GREER

Please never have Ivy Wolk on

Ashley

Contemporary Irish writer rec: Karl Geary. (Former actor) his latest is called Juno Loves Legs. I find him delightful

ck kane

You Can’t Always Get What You Want was PB’s “saddest song” of all time. So, no wonder BEE says it’s their greatest masterpiece.

Patrick

I’m curious to listen to Diamonds from what I have read about it. I agree about the 7-8 albums. I think it’s worth singling out that Beggars Banquet to Exile on Main St. is one of those immaculate, legendary runs that very few artists ever achieve in their career.

N.M. Janice.

one of the greatest bands ever, at least 7-8 legit great albums, Hackney Diamonds is definitely a strong album

Alex Waller

Knowing when to stop helps your legacy. I was at my local music venue watching the counterfeit stones. An older gentleman said the tribute band mimicked what they were like at peak. He was lucky to see them. Before they turned into parody.

Stevan Popovic

They have become a parody of themselves and are a Vegas act at this point, but during the late 60’s and early 70’s they put out masterpiece after masterpiece. A case could be made that during that time, they were the greatest rock and roll band this planet ever produced.

N.M. Janice.

Five Nights at Freddy’s was a majorrrrrrr indie horror game series that started in 2014, basically a haunted Chuck E Cheese. Made by some weird Christian guy who hates gays, even though most of his fans are gay. It completely won over my 8 year old heart. Basically a big nostalgia trip for early internet kids.

Artemis Fedorchuk

Also, we need Bret on Letterboxd STAT!

Artemis Fedorchuk

Rolling Stones ultimate corporate band. No effort. Maximum money achieved.

Stevan Popovic

Discussing fantastic short story collections and not mentioning those of Franz Kafka and Mary Gaitskill? Oh lordie…

Artemis Fedorchuk
