True story. I am a straight guy who had a gay brother. The very first time I heard Dancing Queen I was dancing with my brother in a gay bar. I've laughed at that ever since, every time I hear that song played.

Jim Corboy

Gee, I am so sad that only less than 12 or less per cent of SAG have jobs. Perhaps the rest should get real jobs? They all think they're going to grab the golden marble and at some point if they don't realize they aren't going to do that and just go get a job, well, I don't think I really lose much sleep tonight.

Jim Corboy

A self-professed Clash fan's love of cheesy pop is pretty 'strange' n'all?

Steven Hamilton

a classic, yes. A masterpiece, no. But it's my favorite Kubrick

Neil G.

Bret often has very strange opinions on films. Why did it take so long to realize ‘The Shining’ is a masterpiece?

Thomas Matich

For some of us, movies are the ONLY mental reprieve from the daily torture of life/existence. So to suggest we just not be concerned about their death is quite a thing to ask

Richard Raymond

Local Hero is another good one.

Thomas Edwards

Thanks for the Atlantic City tip - had never heard of that and just watched and it’s a great little film with a killer ending.

GC

Great episode. Glad Bret is enjoying the new Tim remix, The Mats have never sounded better. Good to see The Counselor mentioned too. Big fan.

Iain

great point. i still like eyes wide shut more.

Collin Myers

You obviously don't get it. It's not supposed to be scary in the conventional sense; it's meant to be a gloomy black comedy because the dark, sick, ironic joke that Kubrick plays on the audience is that he's crazy before he enters The Overlook and he is "chosen" to go absolutely berserk and kill his family...unlike the book where it's an innocent guy who descends into madness. The horror is in the cruel irony, not in conventional terms. Watch it again.

Neil G.

Me three, down the street from Bret. I used to walk by his fancy building all the time.

BUtterfield8

the shining is not a great movie nor is it particularly effective at being scary or genre, it is nice to look at and has great sets and backdrops. but it has no build up or narrative order of any kind, one minute they are driving up a mountain and 20 minutes later jack is fuming and staring out a window lookin crazy. it just lacks something and feels oddly slow and drawn out and to me points back to the fact that kubrick was a great visual master but not a great storyteller. i actually think he is somewhat overrated.

Collin Myers

Excellent episode especially the parts on The Shining.

David Willis

There is hope yet. These things remain accessible through art and one's offspring etc.

Thomas Edwards

Watched the shining long version. Its not an horror film. Thats the problem with it. Cronenberg pointed out he did not understand the genre. Has Bret watched the tv mini series?

Stevan Popovic

Would anyone here agree with Bret's assertion that the greatness of life mostly revolves around sex, beauty, and youth? Because as someome who's had an unsatisfying youth and sex life, that's gonna be quite a bummer to process

David Morgan-Brown

Couldn’t agree more!

N.M. Janice.

Knowing Me, Knowing You

Moz

Me too (1990s). THE best!

Patrick

Is Bret suicidal?

Happyhead

I live here now it is not so great

Great Episode

Knokkel knokkel

Yes, Burt just has an incredible filmography. The Swimmer is really enjoyable to watch.

Chris Gerard

Iived in NYC in the 90s. It was a great time.

Robin Hunter

Best Lancaster performance is Elmer Gantry in my opinion.

Brad Elmore

we all have our favourite episodes, this is mine: Lancaster, Abba, The Shining , Andrew Holleran, life's true meaning was revealed... maybe Bret didn't answer as many questions as in previous episodes but I love how him and Adam expand the conversation in each topic.

Daniel Hd Q

Oops I realize now he expands on his initial thoughts. Excellent

Darren Ankenman

I'd like to find that quote from "Nights in Aruba".

Eric Patton

would be great if Bret would an expanded talk about The Shining and why it didn’t work for him before , and then how it’s genius now. Deep dive

Darren Ankenman

They focused on the models in George Michael’s Freedom video from 1990. That was the genesis of the Supermodel. The 5th was Tatjana Patitz, but she passed away in January. That said, Claudia was definitely a supermodel in every sense of the word! The Guess ads were phenomenal.

Brad Turner

He talked about The Super Models. I was surprised that he didn’t mention Claudia Schiffer and that the show doesn’t cover her. I seem to remember she was huge in the 90s.

Chris Gerard

Hope the expanded Shards universe includes a half-hour sitcom set at Trumps restaurant on 1981. (Best chapter in the novel.)

Eric Z.

Cannot recommend ABBA's final album "The Visitors" (excluding the most recent one) enough - especially the expanded edition with bonus tracks. I had always just stuck to the singles but was recommended it earlier this year and have been playing it non-stop since. It was written as both couples marriages were breaking down and while a little goofy at times, is a fantastic pop album and noticeably a lot darker than a lot of their other material.

Haiku Thompson

bret made me scream at my phone when he said “knowing you, knowing me” and not the correct other way around for abba song title 🤣

Nick Not Nolte

Looking forward to seeing the opening sex scene in The Shards. I have it cast already

sean in hawaii

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

A truly otherworldly beauty. Such haunting eyes…

Artemis Fedorchuk

If your novel doesn’t have a seventy page detour about a glove factory, then I’m not reading your book : )

Seneca Garcia

Shelly Duvall was stunning.

N.M. Janice.

Portholes? Portals? You said portholes. Love Adam always correcting Bret’s weird English. 😆

Patrick

I really thought the new Rolling Stones video looked like a bad Verizon (or some kind of cell phone) commercial…it didn’t feel rock n roll at all. And Sydney Sweeney’s air guitar dancing is beyond cringe. Everything feels like some kind of watered down Instagram reel nowadays, which is where everything seemingly ends up anyway.

Ashley

Watch The Shining from Wendy’s POV as if she’s the one losing her mind. Completely different.

Brad Turner

Loved the Burt Lancaster love. You are wrong about one thing though, Bret. The Swimmer is fantastic, and it definitely does work. Give it a rewatch.

N.M. Janice.

I always get an email that says it’s Q & A time and then just go to that post and submit the questions there. I think Adam only reads the questions submitted on that post.

Ashley

kubrick bless

Poetical Gore

Young Shelley Duvall was one of the women who made me realize I was attracted to women ✊ NO SHELLEY DUVALL SLANDER !!!

Artemis Fedorchuk

Great episode

PETER GREER

I don’t know how it is nowadays but they made separate posts for questions.

Oleg

Can someone please tell me how do I submit a Platinum question. Just here in the comments? Or some secret Platinum cave I haven't found yet?
