S7E20: Waters Full of Anger

Bret Easton Ellis discusses finally locating a key component of Wes Anderson's artistry in Asteroid City, addresses an inquiry into the origins of one of his novels and ponders his comparison to a dead French counterpart as he fields questions from Platinum members on the air.

Do the Right Thing is pretty good and showed so much promise, but agreed on the rest--he's self-contradictory and an actual racist just as bad as anybody on that, cloaked behind 1 good movie from 1989.

Bret

Spike Lee is just an anti white racist and his films are shit

Ray Bowers

Inside Man’s lead is played by Denzel, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is in there too, so not exactly “an all white cast.” Also, except for a fantasy sequence done in color, She’s Gotta Have It is most definitely in black and white.

Has anyone in here seen the LESS THAN ZERO TV-Pilot Bret mentions at around 1:07 that floats around somewhere on the internet? And in that case... is it really bad? Or somewhat ok in some aspects..?

TimAnder

Great episode. I liked that Bret enjoyed The Idol. I did too.

Maybe if you removed three quarters of the dialogue, slowed it down to a glacial pace and interjected some scenes of extreme violence. I wish it was made by NWR, as that might have been interesting. I was not offended or outraged by anything in the show, but I thought the writing and direction was god awful. I don’t think I am a Sam Levinson fan.

I came out of Platinum as my question was never addressed. Are you sure there is a backlog as Adam has seemingly moved on?

Philip Huntley

Isn’t The Idol the show Nicolas Winding Refn has been trying to make these last few years?😂

Philip Huntley

i read alain robbe-grillet in high school. technically impressive, but can't say i'd be particularly eager to re-read him.

Neil Anderson

I wanted to like The Idol a lot more. I’m not offended by it at all, just think it could be so much better. The cast is great for the most part, but I don’t believe Lily’s character would fall for the Weeknds character, I don’t care how down in the dumps she is. Tedros is a caricature, which is unfortunate because I do think The Weeknd has the goods as an actor. But I don’t believe him in that role. If they had made Tedros more subtle or at least hip in a modern sense (aka without the ridiculously unbelievable rat tail), we maybe could have fallen for him with her, which would be much more effective. I still need to watch episodes 4 and 5, so we’ll see if those change my mind.

They have a substantial backlog so unsure when your Qs will be aired. You can file your Qs anytime I think.

Look forward to listening to the Proust appraisal. Would be good to know which translation was read.

Dave

Saigon...hahaha.

Joseph Cornelius Hallenbeck

Thinking of upgrading to Platinum. How often do they do questions from members?

Thomas Rankin

Loved listening to this! Brightened up my day 😌

Laura B. Farrugia

Miracle at St. Anna is Great War film. I saw it when I was 13 years old. So take my recommendation with a grain of salt. The ending was very good.

Raymond Smith

i’m soooo excited for luca to do the shards. the two of you coming together !! magic 😌😌

mia

👏👏👏

Patrick

Don’t I know it :(

Paul Richardson

I miss the essays.

Steve

But, I think....if you give people what they vocalize that they want: "nice stories with good upstanding characters who reinforce social justice narratives" they wouldn't like it. They wouldn't watch it. We wouldn't even hear about it.

Kristeen

I don’t get it either, I was trying to talk to my coworkers (I am a zoomer and most of them are millennials) about how boring and unengaging i found it, but the moment I mentioned it multiple of them started shrieking about their moral qualms with it as if it was something blared into their skulls against their will and not something they had to go out of their way to put on and watch

sasha

Right on. I second that emotion.

Adam Long

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

I’m truly baffled that people are so offended and shocked by The Idol. It really signifies this weird place that we are in as a culture. Feels like we have come around full circle, and we are back in the 50’s again with all of this puritanical outrage over sex and unlikable characters. The only difference is that it’s coming from the other side now. No wonder everything sucks so much right now when all this generation seems to want is nice stories with good upstanding characters who reinforce social justice narratives. How fucking boring.

N.M. Janice.

Ashley nailing it!

Fleeting existence and serious medical conditions aside, for men over 40, mojo depleting elephants in the room can be sugar, alcohol and falling testosterone levels. I am no doctor, but know a few and this comes up alot in conversation. Consult your physician? Hope you feel good tomorrow. Thanks for doing the podcast.

Robbe-Grillet directed 10 films, my favorites are: Eden and After (1970) La Belle Captive (1983) Successive Slidings of Pleasure (1974) N. Took the Dice (1971)
