You fuckers - you've got me watching fuckin' 'Venderpump Rules'?!

Steven Hamilton

America is number 2 on the list of most obese countries I believe. Sounds like you haven't to be Europe.

Stephen

It’s rather refreshing and relieving to hear BEE realize and acknowledge his privilege. I sometimes think I’ll cancel my subscription to this podcast, only to have an episode (such as this) which keeps me returning for more.

J Hay

You’re not serious, are you? If so, you clearly haven’t compared this hypocritical, extremely corrupt and selfish (as [un]well as stunningly ignorant) nation — especially when compared to most Western European countries.

J Hay

would enjoy a proust episode. i am now making my way through his unfinished Jean Santeuil.

Marcelo

That would be odd - maybe the only ones interacting!

Laura B. Farrugia

Are we the only two French listeners ?

Jean-Philippe

OMG drop Mondays episode already - even if it’s a re-run. I’m having back surgery✂️ & I need a new episode!!Puuuuuuuleeeeeezzzz.

Love the Q&As, Bret

Tommy Stronach

Bret is my spirit animal. Always an air of low key melancholy or malaise hanging over despite living in mostly sunny SoCal, near the beach. Anyway, Bret should watch Love Island UK on Hulu. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s endlessly entertaining. The best guilty pleasure reality show. You can thank me later.

Taylor Swift released a bonus track on the deluxe edition of MIDNIGHTS titled "Snow on the Beach (with More Lana Del Rey)" which includes Lana on a verse, correcting the horrific oversight on the album track.

I think Bret may have a point that porn accessibility has robbed hot movie sex scenes of their mystique. Also, Hollywood’s attitude about sex seemed more chaste after the ‘90s, and actresses started demanding nudity clauses in their contracts. I remember sneaking around to watch Basic Instinct on VHS or Showtime when I was eleven or twelve back in the early ‘90s, and it was quite a revelation to my preadolescent self. I’m not sure if those sex scenes between Michael Douglas, Sharon Stone, and Jeanne Tripplehorn might cast the same spell on pre-teen males today if they have access to double-penetrations and gang bangs on their phones. However, Hollywood sex scenes convey eroticism and mood, whereas porn evokes something primal and dirty. (I don’t mean “dirty” pejoratively, just blunt and carnal.) Interesting that Bret speaks of his collaboration with Paul Schrader on The Canyons, since Schrader’s ‘80s remake of Cat People pulsates with nudity and eroticism. John Heard tying Nastassja Kinski to a bed and fucking her into a leopard while David Bowie hums to tribal Giorgio Moroder synths and drums is one of the kinkiest scenes that I’ve ever seen in a mainstream Hollywood film.

Listener from Paris, France here 🌀

I'm glad Adam sees how much we love the Q&A episodes. I can't always get through the normal ones if the guest isn't for me. Thanks Brett and Adam!

Dominic Dilullo

I'm with the fans on Bret's travels. Love Adam!!!

E

It killed me

Tom

I love Bret but disagree with him when it comes to Europe. Clearly America 🇺🇸 and Americans are higher educated, better looking, thinner, wealthier and safer compared to Europe. America is a great spot. It’s a great time to be an American.

But did you die? -Mr Chow

Erick

I’m a customer. I can offer my feedback for a better product. Also, suck my dick

Ned Isakoff

Bret have you considered.. https://youtu.be/ncj75qPSP3s 🤣

Erick

Less complaints

Erick

What?

Pp358

Less guests too. Bret should just talk for two hours

Happyhead

Schadenfreude about people dying and tragedies - almost always not funny in execution and always a sign of low character.

Vin Bravo

Less Adam, please

Ned Isakoff

Interesting to hear Bret talk about the late Martin Amis. Amis actually briefly mentions Bret in his final book, Inside Story, describing him as 'blithely unsqueamish' which I don't think was meant as a compliment...

GC

Future dream guest: gary fisketjon

Darren Ankenman

Seriously look forward to the eps without guests these days.

Lewis Fox

Imagine Dragons: “the shittiest band in the whole fucking world“ Ha. Like them or not Adam, best to speak with a little more introspection and less hyperbole, i.e. not as many ‘fucks’ and ‘shits.’ (Although could be a good drinking game to try the next Q&A ; )

Jim Weaver

Heath insurance is what you do and most importantly don't do to your body - heath insurance is healthy eating.

Travis Films

It was a fabulous episode. Thank you Bret and Adam. It’s so much better when you don’t have guests!

Jorge Espinha

Ultraviolence anyone?

JW

i saw james deen and stoya at a starbucks in silver lake, oct 2015 before a florence and the machine show

Nick Not Nolte

Born To Die is my fav as well.

Patrick

Also, the post-empire conditions you describe makes me think of those viral ‘how much do you pay for rent?’ house tour videos on tiktok, where it shows some 100k a year corporate ‘girl boss’ but she’s paying 10k a month for a box sized New York studio apartment. The American dream as it was known in the 80’s is long gone. The real differential nowadays is whether you have health insurance or not.

Tom

I'm Portuguese listening from Lisbon. You wouldn't need a translator over here! Adam, you must capitalize the podcast popularity in Denmark. Danish women are gorgeous. I'm really upset you get so little from your books. You have accomplished a lot Bret, no reason to feel depressed.

Jorge Espinha

It’s over for writers bros

Tom

Here in Spain there’s one listener since 2015!

David Cortijo

The Shards broke me

Tom

Adam has become such a good co-host. “Vanderproust rules.”

Harrison Bergeron

also LDR Born To Die is easily her best album...BEE has very questionable tastes in music and movies and books....but he's been my favorite author since the early 90s.

Poetical Gore

Adam! Hahahaaa! I’m looking forward to Brett’s faves for the first half of 2023 and I’m eager to hear about his reading of Proust. I like when Brett talks books; I wish he’d talk more about horror novels he’s loved. It was one of my favorite parts of White. There’s so many new cool horror novels having a moment right now and I think he’s missing out. Anyway, thanks for another episode. Love you both!

Tracy Stapleton-Lutkins

It really is.

N.M. Janice.

God, the present era is so fucking depressing.

Ben

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Would LOVE to hear more on Vanderpump Rules. Also very curious to know what Bret thinks of The Idol.

Clare O'Brien

Adam is hilarious. the Gaytriarchy!!!

Poetical Gore

Hah! Adam found it. Yup yup yup…

Patrick

The ScoJo movie 🐝 can’t remember is Under The Skin which is excellent and directed by Jonathan Glazer. Anyhoo, missed these Q&A episodes and enjoying throughly… 🙏

Patrick

Adam you were great on this episode and the Q&A of recent times have been the best episodes recently. Love how they start with Brett’s ruminating on the world and how he feels about everything before getting into the questions. And yes Brett, definitely start the next one with what has moved you recently. Interested to know how you got on with Proust even if that’s a mountain I doubt I’ll ever climb

Dan

I'm an italian listener. I would call midnights a victory lap. Bringing the team back together for a final project before starting something new. It took some time but now I really love the album.

Alexander Toetsch

RIP those guys in the submarine. Man went to the moon in a tin can.

Thomas Edwards

It’s like therapy to me …… at 59 too.

PETER GREER

The description made me smile ♥️

OHH

Your thinking of a bottle episode, Brett. One of my favorites is the sopranos episode where Chris and Paulie get lost in the woods after botching the killing of that Russian dude.
