S7E11: The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks

Bret Easton Ellis discusses a challenging collaboration, resoundingly denies an accusation of hobnobbing and eulogizes a fallen ringmaster as he fields questions from Platinum members on the air.

Jerry Springer was a really good person. I grew up in Cincinnati where he lived for many years, he was a beloved newscaster and the vice mayor. A friend dated him and he hung out at the bar I worked at.

Boys of Sumner is 100% a night song.

Sodaheiress

I could listen to Bret answer questions all fucking day.

Josh Boone is apparently planning on shooting a feature film based on Trouble Boys. I hope to Christ it doesn’t happen. Nat Wolf as Paul Westerberg? No thanks. A documentary could be cool I suppose. I just don’t see how anything will top Trouble Boys. Lemon Jail, Bill Sullivan’s book, is worth checking out if you haven’t read it. Had me in stitches.

Iain

Replacements fan here as well. They need a real documentary. That one done about 10 years back with no music or band members doesn’t cut it. Westerberg seems to not be the type looking to get involved in that sort of self promotion but a doc needs to happen

Vin Bravo

Oh yeah. It feels like yesterday that Bret was like “holy shit the new Bond has brought life back to the big screens”. I think he’ll come around if the right films are playing in the right theaters

Somewhere in all the Bennington podcast talk, a writer pal of Bret’s from the early days came up. Mark Lindquist… he wrote a book Sad Movies. Bret liked it at the time, gave it a blurb. Easy little book. At one point the protagonist plays a song in the during a night drive “here comes a regular” by the Replacements. What a killer track, so good. Bums everyone out in the story

Darren Ankenman

Enough with the Q&A’s!

RFR

I agree about movies. It's so difficult to find anything that interests me in film these days. I am constantly reading novels and can get into some decent tv shows, but it's rare I find a movie I actually want to watch. And usually when I do, I'm left disappointed.

D Michael Hardy

Love the Replacements chat. I think Westerberg’s best solo album is Suicaine Gratification, though 14 Songs does have Things on it, which is worth the price of admission in itself.

I think the pandemic black pilled Bret a little regarding the traditional cinematic experience, especially right after a great movie year like 2019.

Billy Schafer

It's strange to hear Bret be so dismissive of the cinemas these days, when about five years ago he seemed to praise the cinema experience, especially when compared to watching at home ("when you watch a movie at home, you control the movie. When you watch a movie at the cinema, the movie controls you"). I still have love for the cinema experience -- yeah, it's more expensive, everything is these days, and it still costs less than a couple of pints, and having a massive screen and big sound definitely makes certain movies better (The Northman being a clear example). Also, not calling this episode Bret is Afraid? Also, strange to hear Bret name-drop Gordon Lightfoot just after talking about Springer's death

Always great to hear some Replacements talk. My favourite band of all time. I wonder what Bret or Adam thinks of Dead Man’s Pop (Don’t Tell A Soul Redux). I love it. It takes the tacky 80s production off the record and replaces it with a more natural sound, allowing the songs to be heard as they were originally intended. Adam, if you’re looking to listen to Paul Westerberg’s solo stuff be sure to check out Stereo/Mono. In my opinion it’s the great, lost Mats record. That and 49 Minutes Of Your Life are what I’d recommend. Also, Bret might want to check out the recent CD/Vinyl Mats box sets that have been released the last couple of years. I know he fetishises CDs and these boxes are things of beauty. Anyway, thanks for another great episode, guys.

I like the Q&As and Bret monologues more than the guests. Just sayin.

Tommy Stronach

😂😂😂

Patrick

Big thanks to the person with the last question! Always wondered about that scene with Patrick in ROA - and Brett said what I wanted to know. If I ever joined platinum, that was going to be my question.

Tracy Stapleton-Lutkins

It’s hard to find creatives willing to go on an alt-right podcast.

Michael

When are you going to have guests back on?

Jeremy Padow

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Y’all should have Ari Aster’s mom on the podcast!

Shawn Kilroy

Here's that Replacements show (the good one): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OjjVSdytMY

It would be amazing if you could ever get Bale on the show.

Thomas Edwards

Thanks for that AP question Miguel. I never knew about that Casper van Dean deleted scene in Rules of Attraction. Just googled it and watched. Agree with Bret (Et al) that it doesn’t work. But loved the whole answer about Christian Bale and the movie version vs book and its legacy. I need to rewatch and reread. (And like that Bale declined filming that scene for Roger. Smart choice. Although if he had…)

Patrick

Bret will regret not watching Beau at the cinema.

Oleg

Excellent episode thank you
