S7E8: Mr. Lonelyhearts

Comments

"Kill Stephen King and, uhhhh, who were the other two?" 🤣 priceless

Tom

Not his work, just his bandwagoning divisive political arguments that can make anyone insufferable no matter how great their accomplishments are.

Jonathan Davis

congrats https://twitter.com/deadline/status/1648384814087802880?s=46&t=CkMSW3Nef7b04-B7f9AgfQ

MITCHELL SILVERMAN

93 here.

Robert

Delightful episode, I second making this a series.

JW

I think Bret is annoyed by King's constant virtue signaling on social media as a opposed to his work. Bret's always noted King as an early influence, which is why I think he finds King's online behavior all the more insufferable.

Billy Schafer

Well put.

Steve

Stephen King has more fuck you money than God himself yet needs to be on Twitter every day desperately proving his woke credentials to a mob of imbeciles. Why?

Christopher Ward

Yeah! I will never stop liking him! I attempted to start Duma Key and wasn’t able to get into it, but maybe I’ll give it another go. I’m about to embark on Dr.Sleep! I guess I was just curious why Bret had become a naysayer of his. Maybe I missed the pod where he spells it out (or doesn’t), but the whole time I was reading IT certain passages reeked of Bret. I just wonder what turned him off. I know he’s soured on people he used to like in the past, as we all are prone to do I suppose. I want a smoking gun! Jk, it’s ok, there’s room in my heart for both 😂

Ashley

Ashley, I'm a HUGE King fan. It bugs me when other fans pick these arbitrary dates or certain books to measure when King peaked. To each their own, but I still want to flip off these sucka's. I take it a bit personally, haha. King has always been the man within my lifetime. And yeah, the 70s and early 80s work DOES have a certain alluring blush of youth. The 90s stuff kinda did waffle as he found himself again as a more serious writer (foolishly hoping for acknowledgement from the kind of college campus Phantoms who never ascend to be with "real people" sans their ostrich feather hat and ballroom mask. Nothing against college grads, I'm one of them. I just mean stuck up, Harold Bloom loving nosebleeders. I'll get to my point now, ha. Some of my favorite King material was published in the last 20yrs. The Institute. Duma Key. Billy Summers. The Mr Mercedes trilogy (tho I admit these weren't entirely for me). Under the Dome. Doctor Sleep. Cell. If It Bleeds. Joyland. Later. 11/22/63. The Outsider. Ok some of these books vary in quality or what they do for me. I'd still stack many of them against King's supposed prime. I also don't think doing so should be necessary, as if having to justify digging the guy. Screw that. Those other people are the jerkwaters who are missing out. As for Kings political comments... Yeah, pretty cringe. At the same time, WHO f'n CARES?? Oh, no! My day is ruined bc I was made to hear an opposing view from mine! Haha. Whatever, guys.

bpvalentine

Would sharing a substack link here, be, like, really bad taste?

Coats & Ties

I'm just not so much into the questions from the fans episodes and there seems to be a lot of that lately. I have been thinking of cancelling for awhile and coming back later. I'm mostly into filmmaking discussion or just interesting guests.

Travis Films

I think we have to cut BEE some slack given his life situation these days. By that I mean his book tours (those obligations must be winding down, no?). Bret has his film prep, too! If you're unhappy, you could take a break from the pod and return in some weeks. Pick up what you missed later.

bpvalentine

Why all the Stephen King hate? I just finished reading IT & completed some other King classics recently (Carrie, Pet Semetary, The Shining), they were all masterfully written and really enjoyable. I watched some old interviews with him too and he seems pretty chill and funny. I know Bret has said he was an influence for him in his younger years. And I figured he would pick “kill” for him…I don’t follow him or his political ideas on social media, I think I recall Bret saying he’s gone too far in the woke-ness, but I haven’t kept up with any of that to know enough.

Ashley

Are we not having guests anymore?

Travis Films

Adam and Bret have a great back n forth, excellent flow

Trevor Wysling

great story about Peter, loved it

Trevor Wysling

Stephen King is completely insufferable.

Steve

This should be a recurring thing no matter how much Bret hates it.

Jonathan Davis

Dump them

Nikki Ferrari

Really fun episode. Thank you. Please do review classic books and movies from the past. Anything from 1700AD onwards will do! Plus the charming ads - it's like listening to 1950s radio soap interludes.

Thomas Edwards

Strong agree. Power couple

Tom

Favourite episode since the shards

Tom

2000 here. Not all zoomers are lost!

Isaac Williams

I knew King was going to be the kill. One of the most insufferable douches alive and was my favorite author before I read American Psycho. Thanks for saving me from that, Bret. Now we just need to get QT divorced so Bret can finally tie the knot.

Poetical Gore

The late, great Patrick Cowley could’ve eventually scored a film. One of my all time favorite musicians. He produced Sylvester’s “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” as well. Highly recommend the Dark Entries vinyl releases too.

Thomas Matich

Best Q&A yet. Adam, you’re a genius for this one

Normaling

Great episode! A nice idea for mixing up the Q&As. RE: next guest. When Adam said ‘online slap fighting might be brewing’ I was thinking… is it gonna be Dana White? But that could be a bit farfetched.

P Smoke

Great pod. Felt like bret revealed more about himself than he usually does

Chris De Burgha

Fast Times yes. Dazed no. Love the tiny Alan Rudolph bit of love. Those first few are interesting. Welcome to LA is great. his film Songwriter is worth a look

Darren Ankenman

Dazed and Confused is in my top 3 movies of all time. Also loved his follow up, Everybody Wants Some.

Phoenix

Omg ok, cute. Who wants to hang

Anna Sofie Jespersen

You beat me to this. Bret needs to know about this great work. Allegedly discovered in a north Hollywood storage locker after 30 years

Keith campbell

Great show!

Richard Raymond

Another 99er here. i hope you feel old now

sasha

For anyone looking for some sweet gay porn soundtracks, Dark Entries has been releasing Patrick Cowley’s works from the late 70s/early 80s. Check here: https://patrickcowley.bandcamp.com/album/afternooners

Taylor Lewis

How can Bret not like the Joycean tableau that is “Slacker” ! Or Dazed. Maybe they are too straight bro-y

Keith campbell

‘91 here.

Brian Rooney

Absolutely Adam does not get enough credit. That early Twitter Q&A when Bret asked questions to himself. But they wisely adjusted quickly. Bret gave Adam room and Adam didnt go too far. A perfect couple.

Alexander Quattlander

What was over/under on Bret mentioning xhamster?

Alexander Quattlander

Anyone noticed the subtle cut at 19.10 when Bret was getting into the Brooke shields stuff 😅 wonder what he may have said. or am I just overthinking it

Chris De Burgha

Love the porn music question. Lol 🎶

Keith campbell

born in 2004 😬

Lachlan Reid

Don’t spend much time on the Patreon so apologies if this has been said before - but Adam is just great hosting these Q&As. He has a great rapport with Brett and comes across as authentic, smart and fun. He’s a great stand-in for the audience when it comes to asking follow up questions. Would be fun to have them turn the tables for 30 minutes in an upcoming Q&A and have Brett interview him. Who would be up for that?? (BTW, I swear this isn’t Adam’s burner account! Haha)

Jason Keel

I was born in 1999

Nick

We younger folk are out here don’t worry

Gene

I was on the fence about a Mr. Lonelyhearts episode, but that was great and now I want more.

Vincent Nappi

Am I the only Brethead born after 1992 here ? None of my friends listen, I need to make older friends

Anna Sofie Jespersen

Loved the Mr Lonelyhearts edition of the podcast. More in future please. Also, whilst I adore Bret's film criticism his take on Dazed and Confused genuinely baffled me. Hot guys, great music, fantastic dialogue, Parker Posey (!?) whats not to love ?

Bazayer

I've been debating watching the Brooke Shields doc. I'm the same age as her. After listening to Bret talk about it, I'm all in!

Timo

I love how much of a curmudgeon Bret is when it comes to movies. I can definitely relate. Since about 2013, I have probably only liked about 2 or 3 new releases a year, but I think Bret has me beat.

N.M. Janice.

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Great episode…👏🏻

PETER GREER

Thanks v. much for the great answer to my question BEE and for keeping it going Adam. Todd rules! 🙌

Patrick

Also, loved the Nathaniel West discussion. I read Miss Lonelyhearts and Day of the Locust around the same time I read American Psycho for the first time, so I always associate West and Bret.

Alec K. Redfearn

I was raised Catholic. Ash Wednesday is connected with Lent.

Alec K. Redfearn

This episode was so fun. I totally called the marry, fuck, kill choices.

Pp358

Super fun episode! But next week is a another Covid discussion? …….. ugh

OSOS

Always interesting to listen to Bret.

Jorge Espinha

Now I can’t wait to listen 😂

Pp358

Let's never again have this idea that there can be enough depravity!

bpvalentine

Sorry for the accidental omission of the specific incident! I was drunk and listening to taylor swift while commenting. After typing it out it kind of just sounds like run of the mill zoomer depravity though so I deleted it
