Really good episode. Felt more like she was interviewing Bret but the guests did dominate a little too much on recent episodes so it was refreshing to hear Bret speak a little more.

David Willis

Maria Semple didn't know the "mechanics" of gay sex, but did she know the "mechanics" of stuffing fish up a woman's cunt and sealing it with super glue?

slimshadyfan666

Bret, repost the Tom Sizemore episode from 2014! Seems fitting, in light of his recent passing. One of my faves. Mostly bc he remembers you stealing his coke on more than one occasion in the 80's in NYC.

Constantine

Get James Ellroy. Just do it.

BrienPiechos

This was a great episode. One of the best in months. Thanks Bret and Adam!

Nick

such a great read, got me so jazzed up i bought a copy of lunar park and am going to wet my beak all up in that knopf hardcover

Collin Myers

The Shards book itself was a lot of fun. Glad to have read it.

Ben

I loved this--and so great to hear such in-depth and specific questions (and answers) about THE SHARDS.

Megan Abbott

Great episode - Maria is a great interviewer/conversationalist.

Dave

A great blowjob between two friends is a thing of beauty.

Timo

Knowing nothing about her and bored with all my other podcast but this was a terrific interview. I like her turn of tables which was delightfully inquisitive and authentic.

Timo

It was a conversation between two friends who admire and respect each other, not a critique.

Pp358

Great episode, hitting the sweet spot of everything I like about the pod.

Frenk van Harreveld

Leave my headspace please.

Magnus Blomdahl

(bill lumbergh voice): oooh. yeah. umm...i'm going to have to go ahead and sorta disagree with you there

Collin Myers

Didn't sleuths on here figure out who the producer was that raped Bret in 81? The guy really did off himself in the 90s.

Happyhead

Interesting she momentarily drew Brett towards victimhood. Perhaps a difference relates to the fact women generally possess tradeable sexual power solely when young. Some wake up at 42 and think fxxk I've been duped and short changed! Whereas men, especially gay men, wield sexual power when young, and may also exercise money, connections, show biz power etc later on, so feel less victimised when look back. At 50 they can now have a turn as the movie producer. And let's face it, many of us knew at 17 that doors were opening for us and drinks were free, because... well, we were 17.

Thomas Edwards

This was fantastic. 10-10. Can’t wait for part 2! 😎

Patrick

This was a rare unsatisfying listen. Hearing one professional friend blow another for an hour? The exchange would have automatically gained credibility if the guest has even just one aspect of the book to critique. But no, she loved every single thing about it. Sigh.....

paul dakota

I loved this episode.

Tracy Stapleton-Lutkins

Quickest I've finished the pod in a while.. unsurprisingly a writer/author is one of the best guests in recent memory. I know Bret has talked about his writing approach a ton on this pod as well as how he wrote The Shards, and somehow Maria was able to make this hour fascinating just asking Bret really good/interesting questions.

Charlie C

@bret please talk about the Oscar’s. Clearly an important year with Tar etc all losing out would love to hear insights

Nick @

Great episode. That hour flew by.

Iain

Thanks, Dan. I'll check that out.

I think this is the Spring Break Palm Springs incident BEE refers to. Fascinating read >> https://eu.desertsun.com/story/news/crime_courts/2018/03/27/1986-spring-break-riot-changed-palm-springs-here-video/429097002/

Dan Palmer

Very much enjoyed this episode, looking forward to part 2.

Phoenix

Great episode; Maria talking about driving is brilliant.

Romeo Delta Charlie

Not a chance. He’s BEE!

A B

Proud to say I have one student, junior in high school, independently reading Rabbit Run. Cheers, everybody. Great episode.

Brian Rooney

Sure you don’t care (bet your agent does)… but do you think your publisher put forth a lower offer on The Shards bc it was first exposed and serialized on the pod?

Devon H. Dolan

holy shit!!!! so excited for this!

Collin Myers

Can we find out who this producer was that raped Bret back in 81?

Happyhead

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

Amazing episode, thank you for making it!

Rebecca Luxton

Absolutely wonderful. The second episode can’t come soon enough.

Bookth

GREAT GUEST!

honker_2021

Great episode. I don't know who Maria Semple is, but she was a great guest!

mr_potato

Loved Marie’s questions and Bret’s answers about The Shards. Where’d You Go, Bernadette is one of my favorites. I read a lot and forget quite a few of the books I read, but I still remember parts of this book vividly. Can’t wait for part two.

Kathy Oldenburg

Pure delicious heaven of an episode.

Pp358

Everything I wanted to hear him say. So good.

Christy A
