S7E3: Guilty Pleasures and Secret Habits with Matty Healy

Matty Healy of The 1975 and Bret Easton Ellis discuss pop culture tastemakers as an endangered species, the most boring indie rock scene ever documented on film and the only thing to ever threaten the existence of The 1975 as they continue their conversation from last week. Part 2 of 2.

S7E3: Guilty Pleasures and Secret Habits with Matty Healy

Comments

Great episode. Some cranky ass geezers in here.

BuffyLuffy

Oh dear, Healy said a lot without saying anything

David Spencer

Always liked the 1975 since the beginning, always viewed Matty as a goof. My perception was way off, enjoyed both episodes and have new respect for Matty!

Mike Rankin

McDonald's is the Number 1 restaurant in the USA and the UK. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Romeo Delta Charlie

Having watched the doc I get Bret's take a lot more. It DID seem like every band was totally depressed the whole time. I think they just didn't have much footage beyond band members looking tired/depressed and acting out for cameras. The book makes the time seem a lot more fun and inspiring.

Billy Vega

I was a bit surprised at Bret's dislike of the Strokes (and the early 00's rock sscene in NYC). At least the Strokes had sex appeal and a sense of decadent glamour to them (something I presumed Bret would like). Plus they really tried to write songs with hooks. You can argue how many great songs they had and of course they didn't have any anthems. But I thought Bret would dig the gen x like 'we aren't trying that hard and are in fact effortlessly cool' posturing. Same with Interpol. At least they went all in with the suits and making a big bold album statement on their first record. I get the feeling Bret has some weird retrospective FOMO for 1) not following his own musical pursuits 2) having left NYC If you want to hate on NYC music I would understand hating on the post garage rock era of Animal Collective and 'freak folk.' But not the Strokes man. They went for it and burned out fast. Almost a Replacement like Icarus failure arc as well of not being able to handle the expectations (another element I thought novelist Bret would love). I was just surprised by this take.

Billy Vega

Aside the faux shock at being asked the Eagles question despite having mentioned earlier in the interview that he had listened to previous episodes of the BEE podcast.

Sam

Meet me in the bathroom starts a lot of band stories and ends none. Its really a boring let down

Nikki Ferrari

The left did not invent woke. Gay black people did. They invent literally everything that becomes popular.

Nikki Ferrari

Huge get before SNL appeareance. QT-level guest for the current musical moment. Great episodes. A thrill to have. Thank you.

Neil Evans

Did you get back from your run?

Andy Burton

Enjoyed this one. Very strange coincidence- my Dad brought up Wichita Lineman today while discussing BTK killer. It’s so Bret.

Mary Walker

This was like being trapped in a conversation at a party and wondering if the person you are talking to will ever stop. Not good.

Billy Vega

tastemakers? I never gave a shit what the critics said. It was all about someone else had the tape or we saw a sticker of the band on a skateboard and they just had a cool album cover.

Poetical Gore

I admit, not that familiar with either other than songs I’ve heard on the radio, so maybe those references aren’t that spot on. That’s just kinda the vibe I get from The 1975. From the songs I listened to, It just sounds like generic contemporary pop music that you would hear at like a Starbucks.

N.M. Janice.

even better than part-1! was so looking forward to his answer to the eagles question and matty did not disappoint ! so good. def a guest you can have return on the show, he’s so fun to listen to and intellectual af

Nick Not Nolte

Bye Felicia. Don’t let the door hit you.

WOLF STAR

I don’t know what Maroon 5 and Ed Sheeran songs you’ve been listening to.

WOLF STAR

I really hope he doesn't do it. I'm sick a tired of musicians and dumb actors

Jorge Espinha

Best Eagles answer yet.

Clark Dartfunkel

Apparently I am in the minority, but enjoyed this episode. I am a Gen Xer myself and enjoyed Brett’s comments on the music of our time especially analog to digital. I think our generation has seen the most rapidly changing advances in technology to date in history. I, only about a month ago, discovered The 1975 and am embarrassingly obsessed at the moment. Matty has an undeniable charm. I enjoy listening to his perspective on music versus Brett’s probably because I can relate to both. Again Gen X versus my kids and Matty’s Millennial view.

Kathy K

when are the archived episodes going to be made available to platinum?

mr_potato

Well - I suggested to a chap on here last week that he actually listen to the whole thing before making a judgement. Did listen myself and this guy was pretty interesting in the first half but utterly insufferable in the second. ‘I speak for all my band’ - ugh. You should get his mum on, Bret! She’s had an interesting tabloidy style life. He was more interesting discussing literature than music.

James__

Eek, I dunno. I just see a lot of logical fallacies. Perhaps entertaining but nothing of substance, or so I think at least.

Brian Rooney

Russell Brand on Bill Maher last week was epic. But not sure if I can take 2 hrs of it.

Thomas Matich

Superb interview but Bret Phoenix are as big as ever and just released another acclaimed album a few months ago with Ezra Koenig on it! You’ll love it

Tom Andrews

Only knew about this guy from his creepy IDing women to kiss them so I looked up the song mentioned a few times About You. Like an even shitter Snow Patrol.

Graeme

The guests are usually the lamest part of the show, but this truly was an ordeal. With some stiff competition MH may well have been the most tedious guest to date!

Ieuan Jones

That must have been a fun one to edit

P Smoke

Did not enjoy the guest at all, and then he goes on to say Antkind, the debut book from Charlie Kaufmann, is really good. It's the worst book I've read on years, and at 700+ pages a particularly long one.

Dan Zilic

It wasn’t a bad interview. I liked parts. I just felt like the guy beat his chest a little too much. He was interesting at times and it was great to hear The Replacements mentioned. I checked out The 1975 - they suck.

Iain

One of the best episode guests in a very long time. So much more interesting than some creep Tim pool writer or some small time film journalist in Colorado.

Richie Laufman (Dixie who went Yank)

Haha, no. The 00s NYC isn’t anywhere among the greatest of all time. It’s just very watered down derivation of late 70s/early 80s NYC scene (and parts of early 70s NYC scene like Lou Reed,New York Dolls). Enjoyable pastiche and rock’s last gasp, but disposable. And Interpol was a Joy Division cover band. Go to the source for the real deal

Vin Bravo

Did you see Jack Antonoff butcher the Beatles recently? Dude reeks of vapidity.

Brian Rooney

Russell Brand's show is FAR more entertaining these days than anything going on here now.

Antonio Primavera

Interesting. I find that sometimes agree with Mr. Shady. But here… that scene is kind of weak. I’ll give you the first two Strokes albums and maybe some LCD. But gosh, I dunno … I prefer Devendra Banhart though. So different strokes.

Brian Rooney

How is there a second part to this shit? Who cares anymore? Sadly, I am leaving. I was here from the beginning. It really sucks now.

Antonio Primavera

For the love of God, do not have Russel Brand on the pod. For the love of God!

Brian Rooney

I very much agree. Surprised Brett is so down on it. Nothing going on in rock music today even comes close to The Strokes or Interpol when they were at their height.

N.M. Janice.

Yes, The Strokes were cool. 1975 are alright, fun guest.

Chris Jones

I haven't seen Meet Me In The Bathroom but the New York indie scene of the '00s is one of the greatest of all time. You are wrong.

slimshadyfan666

am going to listen on my run. will say more later, after my run.

richard owain roberts

The dude is tireless. Hope he allows himself at least one deep breath and a sip of champagne!

Thomas Edwards

I think he starts his second book tour today, too!

bpvalentine

Happy Birthday Brett!

Thomas Edwards

You cannot say "objectively" that anything is better than anything else. Stop the word murder!!! LOL.

Poetical Gore

Was not familiar with The 1975 before this, because I enjoyed the interview, I looked up a few songs on youtube. My god, his band sucks! Christgau was right. Not what I expected them to sound like from the interview. The most vanilla, bland, commercial pop garbage. Sounds like fucking Maroon 5 or Ed Sheeran. Give me The Strokes all day over this saccharine, inoffensive bullshit. Did enjoy the interview though.

N.M. Janice.

Just saw Heavens Gate for the first time now on Criterion Channel and it was excellent - with all the talk on here I expected it to be like watching Cremaster, but it was compelling from beginning to end✌🏽🙌🏽I’ll say it’s as good as a movie like Tarr imo just for modern day comparison 🏝️

Seneca Garcia

My favorite part of The 1975 story is the bromance among "the guys." Thats truly something thats just absent in recent times. I'd love to see more of the thing. We glorify such a mercenary aesthetic in culture since hiphop took over - not to say that was soley to blame. But "Get Rich Or Die Trying." Yes, im aware 80s Gordon Gecko might say "hold my big ass satellite phone." I liked Matty Healy but he talked some bulllllshit, haha. Woke is from "a good place," but 5mins later Bret and Matt are talking how they try killing careers with Wokeness and maybe it's not quite sincere always. Apparently Matt wrote music w Greta Thunberg, so says his Wiki. I guess that's what he means by its from a good place? People tend to forget the right didn't coin "woke." That was the left trying to bully w that term. Seems they've been made to eat it. I still think of myself as liberal. Jesus - I think it's the woke people who are conservatives in their Nazi way. My niece introduced me to The 1975 4yrs ago. I struggled with... the production reminded me way too much of Fine Young Cannibals or just that general late 80s sound. Wasn't a fan then and... I like Healy but I struggle w it. I loved all the Less Than Zero discussion. It was Healy instigating it, btw, not Bret. It was a fan. Yes, we already know much of it, but there's always a new piece that Bret remembers on the spot that I think I haven't heard before. I'm here for it. I forget the details, too, so I don't mind the retread. I never go back to the old shows unless I have a real... maybe Podcast One bc it was so long ago now.

bpvalentine

Too clever by half

Moz

Loved this. I could listen to even more episodes with Matty.

Kathy Oldenburg

Are the archival episodes going to be loaded?

Gabriel Sanchez

Let’s go! 😎
